An antibiotic is a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria. It is the most important type of antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections, and antibiotic medications are widely used in the treatment and prevention of such infections. They may either kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria. A limited number of antibiotics also possess antiprotozoal activity. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses such as the common cold or influenza; drugs which inhibit growth of...

What does every 12 hours mean?
I have to take my meds every 12 hours. I took my first dose at 3pm. When do I take the next? ## The next dose should be taken at 3am, according to FDA guidelines. Thus, if you don't wish to be up at 3am, you may want to change your dosing schedule. What medication are you taking? Knowing this would enable me to provider with more precise information. ## 3 am and then the next day at 3 pm and so on. ## I'm taking a antibiotic for my sinus infection. It says to take it every 12 hours by mouth. So what does that mean? ## It means that you should take the recommended dose once every 12 hours. So if you took one dose at 9 am, you should take the next dose at 9 pm. Does that make sense? ## It depends on the drug. Is it time critical such as a diabetic med or an antibiotic. Diabetic me...

Clindamycin, hot flashes, sweating
Can Clindamycin cause mild hot flashes, and feeling of sweating? I looked at side effect list and it is not listed. ## Hello, Bec! How are you? Yes, it's normal for most medications to cause those types of symptoms and very commonly reported. The FDA lists the other side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. If it gets too severe, you should have things checked out by your doctor. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I have only today and tomorrow left on this medication for dental surgery. It has made me feel tired, and like I'm sweating. I was worried because I asked a few people who took the medication, and they said they didn't know, it didn't affect them this way. But I really appreci...

why does cefdinir make my urine smell
Does cefdinir make your urine smell and does it cause you to need to go more often? ## The exact reason why medications do certain things to the body are unknown, however, they all do have side effects, because you are ingesting a foreign substance. Cefdinir is an antibiotic, a generic for Omnicef. The most common side effects include: nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain and headache. That said, it should not make you urinate more frequently, but medications do affect people differently. Have you talked to your doctor about this? ## Yes. My urine smells awful, just like the smell/aftertaste of the capsule when I take my dose of Cefdinir. ## Mine too, just reeks. ## My urine smells terrible since I've been taking Omnicef.

Ref: Bactrim Information Typically, the go away a few days after finishing your course of treatment, but if they do not, you should consult your doctor.

Cefuroxime drug half life
Cefuroxime was a 10 day antibiotic. How many days does it take to leave your system after treatment? ## I'm also curious to find out how long this drug will be in my system? ## Antibiotics tend to have rather short times of duration in the body, which is why they must be taken regularly, over a certain period of time, to fully eradicate the bacteria being targeted. The half-life of Cefuroxime is only 80 minutes, and full bodily processing takes 5 to 6 half-lives, so 6.6 to 8 hours, though there may be slight variations depending on the length of time it was taken, and your individual body chemistry. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Cefuroxime as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. Ref: Cefuroxime Information Is there anythin...

Nitrofurantoin and UTI Remedy
I am going in for a uterus treatment and the doctor had me take a urine culture 7 days prior. Twice, the culture came back as positive and the doctor postponed the uterus treatment. I had no symptoms of the UTI. He then prescribed Nitrofurantoin 100mg once a day for a month prior to the next appointment for the procedure. Is this the right antibiotic for my situation? The dosage? Anything else I might add to rectify the positive result of the culture? ## It is appropriate and the best choice of drug. I am also on this drug everyday in the same dose of 100 mg. I take it to prevent UTIs because I get them all the time. This antibiotic only treats the urinary tract so I understand why your doctor prescribed it. Hopefully the next result you have will be negative. If anything is going to wo...

Purbac Double Strength Information
Can I use purbac double strength while I am taking contreceptives that are called Nordette? I have recently started both medications. ## Hello, Tray! How are you? According to the details provided by the NIH, this antibiotic may reduce the efficacy of your oral contraceptives, so it would be best to use a back up method of contraception, such as condoms, while you are taking the antibiotic. The U.S. FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, irritability, and PMS-like symptoms. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I was prescribed purbac double strength for acne a week ago with epiduo gel. Now my skin looks like it's peeling off & dry. Is it supposed to peel off? Also, what can I use to moisturize my face as it's so...

Macrobid and HCG
I recently found out I was pregnant. Just before I found out, I had a UTI and took Macrobid. I had a blood test at the Dr.'s office soon after I finished the prescription and my HCG levels were very high. Three days later, they were normal again, and ultrasound shows a heartbeat and everything in the right place--not ectopic. I am trying to come up with an explanation for the initial elevated HCG. My thyroid is fine. Could the Macrobid have caused the initial elevation? ## Given that you are pregnant, it is most likely that they just happened to test at the same time your body was producing a high amount of it due to pregnancy hormones, that is normal. You can learn more HCG Information here. Have you discussed it with your doctor? Are you on any other medications?
