Antibiotics Overview

An antibiotic is a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria and is the most important type of antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections. Antibiotic medications are widely used in the treatment and prevention of such infections.[1][2] They may either kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria. A limited number of antibiotics also possess antiprotozoal activity.[3][4] Antibiotics are not effective against vir...

How long does clindamycin remain in your system after finishing treatment

I am finishing a 7 day dose of clindamycin 300 mg taken once every 8 hours on Friday, which leaves me with no weekend coverage if dental infection isn't gone. My dentist told me yesterday that it can remain in my system for awhile, is this true? If so, for how long? ## Hello, Jana! How are you? Yes, that is correct. However, how is the infection doing? If the antibiotic is working, there should be no worsening after being on it for a full 24 hours and you should start to see some improvement after taking it for a full 3 days. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. ## I had a severe headache with flushed feeling after taking clindesse vaginally.never again bad drug ## Took clind...

Taking Cipro with Vitamin D

Can I take a 500 mg Cipro tablet after I took my Vitamin D supplement? The antibiotic is for a small boil. ## Dear Deb, Vitamin D is naturally present in our bodies from sunlight. I don't mean for this to come off as sarcastic in any way, but to my understanding Ciprofloxacin does not interfere with what's otherwise naturally occurring in our bodies (with the exception of reducing beneficial gut flora - and that could be replenished with prebiotics/probiotics). However I believe most vitamins and minerals in their raw form should be fine to take alongside it. I am also speaking from personal experience. NOTE: According to a Walgreen's disclaimer, "sulfa antibiotics in particular can reportedly cause photosensitivity", in which case, taking a Vitamin D supplement inst...

I have been taking Nitrofurantoin 100mg, one per day for 2 months. Since taking it have had bad headaches, lightheadedness, nausea and my blood pressure keeps going low. Can the Nitrofurantoin cause bp to go low and also once the Nitrofuantoin has been stopped, how long before the side effects disappear ? ## I take notification mono/mac 100mg and my blood pressure is elevated ## There is no effect on blood pressure listed among the side effects reported by the FDA, though there is no way to be sure how nay given medication will affect any certain person that takes it. However, I'd be more inclined to think that your respective illnesses are causing these issues, which means they should improve, after they are resolved. But it would be best to have them checked out, to be sure. Other...

Azithromycin Drug Information

I need to know more about an antibiotic prescription that was filled from a brand in India. Is this okay to take? I was surprised that it was not manufactured domestically. ## Can I use azithromycin for a sore throat or throat infection? ## white oblong pill with 787 on one side and PLIVA on the other. ## Azithromycin is a real antibiotic and made by a real company. I really haven't researched it to see what country it is made in. What makes you think it is fake? What are the imprints on it..the numbers/letters, color and shape of pill or capsule. I wouldn't take it just for a sore throat. A sore throat is usually viral not bacterial; therefore, an antibiotic will not really make a difference. If you suspect you have a throat infection such as strept or something like that get t...

White oblong pill no imprint Mexico

It’s supposed to be penicillin. I don’t wanna kill myself. I bought it in Mexico. ## Hello Jay, Unfortunately any medicine that you purchased from mexico that doesn't have an imprint is not going to be identifiable. In the U.S we use the imprints on the medicines to be able to physically identify the pill which allows us to trace them back to their manufacturer which in turn allows us to pull up the information on the specific medication. As a personal rule of thumb I never take any medicine that I'm not able to identify and trace back to the manufacturer. Your pill may contain penicillin, it may simply be a placebo sugar pill or it could theoretically contain morphine. While that's a gross exaggeration it's really not off base, the fact is you simply don...

Does clindamycin hcl have an expiration date

I have clindamycin hcl from 2008. Is it safe to take? ## Have clindamycin 150 mg cap from 1/07/2009, is it still safe to use? ## i have clindamycin 150mg kept in refrigerator is it still good?03/04/09 ## To cover these questions for other site users that may need to know the same information. If they the capsules have been in a bottle that was dispensed by your pharmacy, which exposed them to the elements, they have an expiration date of one year from the date you received them. After that time, they will start to degrade and will no longer be as effective. At that point, it's best to dispose of them, due to the risk of developing antibiotic resistance if you take them. Millie, were you asking about a liquid formulation? If so, those are only good for a week, they degrade very fast....

doxycycline with methadone

Can I take doxycycline hycate 100 ml with methadone? I have cellulitis on my leg. ## Hello, Alicia! How are you? Has your doctor prescribed it for you? I didn't find any interactions or problems listed, but it is always best to double check to be sure. The FDA lists the typical side effects of most antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. ## Alicia, Yes you can if it's doctor prescribed and you have no known allergies to this family of drugs. I recently underwent major surgery and was prescribed it. Other than some minor GI disturbance I tolerated it. PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK WITH YOUR PHARMACIST. ## I am on a methadone prescription and my doctor has prescribed me doxycycline. I need to know if I take them will my methadone ...

I have had bad pain in the upper part of my leg and my hip since I got the rocephin shot. My leg got so sore about 2 hours after the shot, that I could barly walk on it. Now it hurts constantly and it catches and shots pain at where I sit down and stand up. I can hardly walk on my leg. I am wondering is this suppose to happen after this shot. I didn't have this before. ## Soreness, swelling, pain, and redness are possible side effects of getting a Rocephin shot. When exactly did you get the shot? Was it earlier today? Either way, if the pain persists or worsens i would highly recommend that you notify your doctor. Individuals with allergies to antibiotics may also be adversely affected. I would say monitor how you feel, and don't wait too long to place a phone call. Please post ...

Furitex brand Nitrofurantoin 100mg

The box I have of furitex brand nitrofurantoin 100mg that has been given to me for my uti while I'm visiting Mexico doesn't say what dose to take or if it is dual release or regular... How can I tell and should I take two a day or 4? ## Hello Hannah, After doing some research I found a gov webpage that states the dosages should be only taken as prescribed by the doctor and that the dosages may vary from case to case so there is no suggested dosage. With this in mind I don't think it's a very wise decision to be making guesses or just trusting your safety to strangers on the internet. In this case I would suggest two things in the following order. First if you have the option to do so, I would recommend getting a hold of the doctor who prescribed the medication to you or ...
