An antibiotic is a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria. It is the most important type of antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections, and antibiotic medications are widely used in the treatment and prevention of such infections. They may either kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria. A limited number of antibiotics also possess antiprotozoal activity. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses such as the ones which cause the common cold or influenza; drugs wh...Read more Antibiotics Details

levofloxacin 500mg shelf life
I have 6 levofloxacin 500 mg tablets with an expiration date of 12-23-13. Will they still be effective? ## Medications do lost efficacy over time, so they may not work well enough to full eradicate an infection, according to NIH reports. Thus, it would be best to dispose of them and see your doctor for a new prescription, if you need an antibiotic. Its typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Is Levofloxacin good after 5 yrs? What is the shelf life? ## I also have levofloxacin tablets that are 4 years old, 6 tabs have salivary duct infection. Can I take this?

Cephalexin Cap 500 Mg Side Effects Hiccups
My husband has been taking this med for a virus. He will eat something small before taking b/c it upset his stomach. Shortly after taking he will get hiccups that will last for awhile. Can this med cause this and should he keep taking? ## First of all, Cephalexin is an antibiotic, so it is only effective against infections, it will not do anything for a virus, since it's not an antiviral medication. Did his doctor prescribe this? That is why antibiotics cannot be used to treat cold or the flu, because they are caused by viruses, not bacterial infections. Using them inappropriately causes the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. As to the hiccups, it is probably because they can cause some gas in some people, if he is taken it with small amounts of food and gulping a flu...

Becotrim 960
I filled a mail order prescription for bactrim and when i received it, it said becotrim 960. Is this the same? The pills came from india / combitic global caplet pvt ltd. ## Bactrim is sold in the U.S. as an antibiotic for bacterial infections. I researched and looked for becotrim 960. I'm unable to find anything about the becotrim. You said it came from India. The United States do import medications because we do have manufacturing plants in countries like India. However, did you have a prescription for it or did you just wanted to order from a site without having to use a prescription? The pill could very well be Bactrim or it could very well be useless. This is why I go to a local pharmacy, which will carry this product. Did the pharmacy you use have Bactrim DS (double strength)....

Gimalxina Amoxicilina 500 mg
I have taken amoxicilina many times during my life; bought in the US and in Honduras. This last week I got a bottle of 60 capsulas while in Cozumel, to complete my antibiotic treatment (I lost the previous amoxi I was taking). I am very familiar with the smell and taste of amoxicilina and penicillin. I open the capsules when I take it, it tastes bad, and has a unique taste & smell (also in urine). The current bottle I just purchased, red & white capsulas, is a white powder with NO taste nor smell. Furthermore, it appears to have no affect on my sinusitis, and NO odor in urine. This is the first Amoxi I have ever taken that is like this (no taste & no odor. So common sense tells me I HAVE BEEN ROBBED. If this is COUNTERFEIT Amoxi, we need to STOP ITS SALE. The bottle I have s...

Every 12 Hours Example
I have to take my meds every 12 hours. I took my first dose at 3pm. When do I take the next? ## The next dose should be taken at 3am, according to FDA guidelines. Thus, if you don't wish to be up at 3am, you may want to change your dosing schedule. What medication are you taking? Knowing this would enable me to provider with more precise information. ## 3 am and then the next day at 3 pm and so on. ## I'm taking a antibiotic for my sinus infection. It says to take it every 12 hours by mouth. So what does that mean? ## It means that you should take the recommended dose once every 12 hours. So if you took one dose at 9 am, you should take the next dose at 9 pm. Does that make sense? ## It depends on the drug. Is it time critical such as a diabetic med or an antibiotic. Diabetic me...

Reaction to Clindamycin
Started 300 Clindamycin Friday after 2 pills my chest n neck were beet red. I tried to take again the next day the same thing happened. My whole neck n throat Red n Burning. Dr gave this medicine to me because I got a tattoo and all red n itchy after 8 days. My breathing was being affected. I stopped after 4 (300mg) think it's a reaction. TY ## Have you consulted your doctor? While some side effects can be normal, such as those listed by the FDA which may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea, there is a chance you are allergic to this medication, and may need to try a different antibiotic. Ref: Clindamycin Information How is your tattoo healing?

amikacin, expiration date, safe
Is it safe to use nebulized amikacin after the expiration date? My pharmacy sent me the amikacin a week before I needed it and now when I need to use it, it says it's expired. The pharmacy is closed for the weekend and I have no one to ask. My daughter has E.Coli colonized in her lungs and this is more for preventative use. ## The issue with expired liquid medications is that they may turn rancid, and it could become risky to use them. Thus, it is best not to use them once expired, unless your doctor specifically says it is okay to do so. How old is your daughter, and what has her doctor prescribed? Inhaled Amikacin can cause some serious issues, such as allergic lung reactions, coughing up blood, and worsening of existing lung conditions, so it shouldn't be used without a docto...

Affect of Purbac on Oral Contraception
I have been using Purbac for just over a year to treat adult acne. I am currently using a Mirena contraceptive. Will the use of Purbac in any way decrease the effectivness of Mirena and result in pregnancy? ## while being on triphasil, and using purbac at the same time.will this increase your chances of getiing pregnant? ## Purbac is an antibiotic and they most commonly affect oral contraceptives the contain a form of estrogen. The NIH warns that other side effects may include nausea, dizziness, irregular bleeding, and irritability. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I have the implant and have be...
