I am writting this for my 95 year old father with cancer. He is not a drug abuser and really did not know anything about pain medication.. only that it helped control his pain. he is a vet of WWII and the Korean wars. After 2 weeks on the new OP formula he knew something was wrong. He told us his medicine had stopped working and felt sick all the time. He was taken off the OP and put on Opana and Duragesic 100 MCG/H pain patch and he says he still is not getting the pain relief he was getting on his green pills. He does not understand why they took him off his regular medicine and complains daily. This should tell Purdue, FDA, DEA and everyone else that this new Oxycontin plastic is no good. Recall and put the real medicine back on the market! This is unfair to the paitents this medication was intended for!!!!!

My husband has been on several very strong pain medication for many years. None of the meds that he had been given really made him feel confortable until he was given oxycontin 80 mg (oc) he finally had some quality of life and was able to go outside and take a short walk. Then the government decided that purdue should change the formula and came up with the op's. Purdue claims that they produce the same quality of pain relief and they are so wrong. He told his doctor that the whole pill would end up coming out in his stool not desolved, he experienced withdrawal and extreme pain. His doctor ended up putting him on opana 40 mg, this medication is a joke as well and very over rated. We are back to square one with no quality of life for my husband or myself. What is it going to take for purdue to get it. Maybe a lawsuit would be something to open their eyes, if purdues higher ups had pain like some of us do maybe they would act on all of these complaints. The way i look at it is they are looking at people with severe and chronic pain as if we are all drug addicts and abusers. Not all of the people that have pain abuse their medications and maybe they need an awakening. Top officals for these pharmacudical companys should maybe look at us as human beings and treat us as that and not like a dollar sign. But then again purdue is losing money because i have not heard of any person not one that gets any relief from this new formula.
Purdue needs to start listening to their dollar signs (their customers) any read our comments and bring back the old formula so we can all have a quality of life.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about, there is no "outer shell." there is only a wax coating that dissolves almost immediately in your stomach, beyond that, there is the medicine which is made to dissolve completely. If he is finding undigested pieces or whole ones in his stool, his body is not breaking them down and he is not getting the drug into his system. Why would you post such terrible misinformation?

I live in the U.S., a western MA, rural area. There is only one pain management clinic nearby, and they are the ones who recently held the conference with all local doctors to decide on this horrific plan. About 9 months ago, I attended a chronic pain management conference that was given by an out of state group. It was an excellent conference and stressed that doctors should really listen to their chronic pain patients because they know what works for them. It also taught doctors how to recognize red flag patients who may be seeking more pain meds for reasons other than pain, and that part of the conference was excellent too. I also noticed that my PC was there so I was very happy, thinking that he would be more open to managing his chronic pain patients in a more appropriate way. But....when I went to see my PC, I very quickly realized that he ONLY concentrated on the red flag warnings, and suddenly all of his chronic pain patients were suspect, including me. I felt as though we had attended completely different conferences. I have never given ANY red flag warnings. I have never taken more pain meds than I should, I have always tolerated some pain, rather than ask for more meds, I have passed all of his drug panels with flying colors, my counts have always been accurate, I have never gone doctor shopping. I never did anything on the red flag list, and when I told my PC this, he said, "Well, we have to be very careful nowadays because most drug seekers are very tricky and good at fooling their doctors." I have been seeing this guy for 40 yrs, so I don't get where he is coming from. And shortly after that conference, he cut my long acting pain med from 80 mg to 60 mg, and increased my short acting med, which made no sense to me. But then came this new conference, and now long acting pain meds are being decreased then stopped for all chronic pain patients. In 2 months, I was down to 40mg (with no increase on the short acting), and the next stop is 0 mg. I have barely gotten out of bed ever since; it hurts just to roll over. Is this quality of life? Isn't "quality of life" supposed to be the goal for those living with chronic pain? And, I don't know what they're talking about, saying that after many yrs the pain meds don't work anyway, so just stop taking them. They always worked for me. Pain is subjective, so how can they say something like that regarding all chronic pain patients? How do they know? They don't live in our bodies. So, I'm at a complete loss...now living in severe pain with more to come. I can't just up and move. We own a house, our whole family lives close by, including my 99 yr old mother. My husband is approaching retirement & would lose out if he left now. Terrible situation for me and everyone like me. As I see it....hopeless!

I have now taken the new formula op's for 2 month's. I was relieved that i did not have bad side effect's. I take them as prescribed. However i find i have been reaching for my breakthrough pain med's more often. I am having so much more pain..these new op's just don't cover the pain like the old. And it feel's like i am going through slight withdrawal. Am feeling jittery..am having bad headaches from the neck pain. Considing all the ir pain med's i should NOT be going through withdrawl's! Ppl. we have a very corrupt FDA . They will for a price approve ANY drug purdue develops. This is what frighten's me. There is absolutely no accountability with FDA and pharmaceutical companies. Remeber viox? They knew how dangerous viox was yet enough money passed through hand's and it was put on market. What will it take?

I'm gonna explain this one more time. what you are saying is the equivalent of someone saying they ate a butterfinger and then said 'i can see the chocolate coating in my stools but I know I absorbed the crunchy orange part into my bloodstream. Preposterous. The coating on ops is a super-thin WAX coating. It's not a damned capsule. Try sucking on one for 30 seconds and you will easily see how obviously right I am about this. It will dissolve immediately. It has no structure, and therefore no possible way to pass through your digestive system without dissolving in the first two minutes from stomach acid. The inner part is bound together with a plastic-like polymer. That's the part that dissolves with much more difficulty. Anyone who has ever taken this drug can easily observe this obvious truth.

Yea them being 80s U would think U could feel the affects or at least take care of pain. I can't feel any benifits I can't even. Tell I've taking anything Some times I may take a double cause I messed up. U know what still no affects someone going to die from trying to get relief. Do they really care? Not. The DEA needs a legal suit against them, who the f*** they think they R they need to stay out of Doctor/ patient relations there not f***ing Doctors. And the pharmist needs to do there job & fill the scripts They think there Gods of drugs or something we all need to pull together & sue the Bastards & get our right back & be treated like human beings. They treat us like a piece of shot let me know if. I. Got brothers. Out there who have the same beliefs. Man I hope so Big Ben out !!

Hi Janine. ...I'm really sorry that your doctor has it wrong...very wrong, a lot of them do and it has nothing to do with trust like Kimber/Emma said...
I will just fill you in a little. Emma is an upset ex step daughter...she doesn't take pain medication. A lot of the information she supplied was from her father's experience and the rest she read/cut and paste.. She believes doctors know it all but for people in pain that can be far from the truth unless that doctor has had pain himself/herself..I'm guessing it's what they are told by the companies producing this stuff..that plastic coated crap DOES NOT WORK...
Maybe you should find a different doctor to get the help you need...I feel for you. Xo
Ps...I'm sorry that I have, indirectly, bought this childish little person to this page...
Regards to all

I agree with your grandfather-the new formula DOES NOT WORK THE SAME. I also realized something was different and it took about a week to figure this out. I did not feel right-and my pain was worse. I was experiencing ..hell. I did not know the pharmacist gave me the new formulated medication. There is nothing we can do except switch to a new medication. My pain management doctor upped my dose of Perc's but it did not matter. I have Arachnoiditis from the "off label usage" of steroids such as Depomedrol that were injected into my epidural space. I was Punctured-and now have Arach. These epidural steroid injections contain neurotoxins that are added to the steroid and this is written on the package of insert -under adverse events it states: DO NOT USE INTRATHECALLY. but pain doctors do these injections anyway-big bucks to be made. I learned the hard way. I wish I had researched these injections first. Off subject sorry-it is too bad for people that live with chronic pain that some of us can feel the difference with the newly formulated Oxycontin. I realize what people did with Oxy-but angry something that helped me get through the day changed my days now.

Thank you for your prompt reply! I think that is a little backwatds as to the fact that people taking this new formula are basically guinea pigs. That is what frightens me so much. I had considered Opana in the past, even filled a script for it, but returned it to my Dr as I was hesitant to try a new med bc I've had some reactions in the past to most opiates. All in all, I'm a neurotic person so a change like this had me crazy when it first happened & now again. I'm back & forth over asking my Dr to try Opana again as I'm reading here that it made many people sleepy. It's very hard to tell from these boards who is abusing their meds & who is not. If I could just get honest opinions from people who do not abuse, I would at least feel a little better knowing where my knowledge is coming from (I hope that makes sense?) As for the 'OPs', I just can't see how its unknown if the inactive ingredients are safe?! That is my main concern at this moment & its difficult to choose a medication without that knowledge. I feel like I am playing russian roulette here & its clearly a horrible feeling!

Come on now what you're really talking about is that you're pissed that the new formula can't be inj'ed without going through a couple of steps, don't give me this s*** about a GI problem, we're not i****s okay. I'm in the same boat, the needles better I get it. It only takes 1 minute to prep vs 30 seconds. Be glad your still getting any oxycodone, Obama's bulls*** agenda involving Healthcare is why the DEA has cracked down so hard on all doctors, including pain management specialist. F*** obama. Biggest liar of all time.

I had been taking oxycontin er 3 times a day of 40 mg. 2 times and 20 mg. once a day .I have severe neuropathy, fibromyalgia, two transplants and now on dialysis 3 times a week and had shingles and meningitis which has left me with a lot of nerve damage but through all of this I was doing pretty well as far as pain control then they changed it. I did not know they were going to do this yet from one month On the original formula doing well and the month they changed it I went down hill I even brought my medication back to the pharmacy to make sure it was correct and that's when I was told it was changed. When I started reading some comments from people saying we were just druggies, shame on these people I would like to give them my pain for a day and see what they. I am nothing but an empty shell of what I used to be. and the only good thing that happened was renal failure because I can choose to stop dialysis to end my pain, which is what I am in the process of trying to prepare my family in my decision. I have had enough with this country worrying more about addicts than the millions of people with chronic pain. they chose to take medication they didn't need, I have no choice. I have corresponded with people from many different countries having the same problem and some whose country has not forced pharmaceutical companies to change, lucky people in those countries. I know nothing will change before I die but was hoping to help others. Our U.S.A thinks they are stopping addicts. I have read many ways people are cooking up to abuse the new oxy and also others are taking much more than prescribed just trying to alleviate the pain and end up in the hospital and addicts are turning to illicit drugs. So they have done nothing but create different drug abuse with drugs they don't know what is in them. If they really were worried about their kids then they should take alcohol and change it so they can't get drunk many more children die from alcohol than prescription meds and our children are dying from gun related incidents, so ban all gun sales. I am not sure which category I would be in, the can't live in this much pain anymore so I choose not to, I am so angry that addicts are forcing us to live in pain. there are millions of people out there saying that oxy is not the same, I also think Doctors should be ashamed for not sticking up for their patients. My GP had no interest in what I was saying and palliative care didn't seem to care either. In the beginning I wanted to start a petition of some sort but was told it would need to be mostly signed by doctors and pain specialists. I doubt that will ever happen. Sorry this is so long but it may be the last time I will get to say anything. Thanks to anyone reading this.

You mam or Sir do not for the love of God know what you are talking about. I am sitting here in utter shock in the manner in which you are speaking to these "human beings" I dont know which planet you came from or which rock you crawled out of but after 15 + year as taking this medication I have to agree the op's are just terrible !!!! No where near the pain relief that the Oc's had!!! So before you state your opinion like it's " The law" remember that yours is just that...." an opinion" as is mine but with so many in aggreance how could we all be wrong!

Kimber, If Sandie is full of it regarding the OC vs OP situation, then how do you explain my problem? I was on OCs for several years..they worked beautifully for my pain, gave me back my quality of life and I was able to return to work again. I was so happy. Then one day, after picking up my prescription, everything went downhill for me. My pain was back..full on..I had weird GI bloating, and felt extremely fatigued. Then, with my next 2 months of prescriptions...everything improved again. You see, I had no clue that the formula had been changed. I found out later that after giving me one month of the OPs, that for the next 2 months, I was back on the OCs, while they finished their stock. Then, in the 4th month, I had a mixture of both OCs and OPs. Some days I felt fine, but other days, I had pain, bloating and fatigue. I called my doctor because I had no clue what was happening. At first, I thought that my condition was getting worse. But, my doctor told me to speak to my pharmacist; he said he thought changes had been made to the formula. And...that was my first inclination that something was different with the OC/OP formula. The pharmacist explained when I was taking OPs vs OCs, and all of my awful days coincided with the OPs. Now...I have never sucked the coating off, broken or done anything to my medication, nor would I ever. I have been on OPs ever since..because somewhere along the line, my doctor became convinced that OPs are exactly the same as OCs, and I have no other choice for my pain. The OPs do little for my pain. I am bloated and fatigued, and I no longer work again...even though I loved my job. I would give anything to feel normal once again, and I know through my own experience, that bringing back the OCs would give me that feeling of being normal again. In the U.S., we have no choice; we have to deal with OP junk that does NOT work. So...if Sandie is an addict and all the other things you said about her...she did get the OC vs OP conflict right. I am living proof of that.

KJB Targin actually comes in different strengths: 5/2.5, 10/5, 20/10, 40/10... theres is no 2mg at all, so i wouldn't be pointing at others implying misinformation! Targin is a Mundipharma product-same distributor of original Oxycontin & new formula Oxycontin... The idea behind it is to reduce the constipation side effect of Oxycodone, which can cause big problems ie. bowel obstruction, hemorrhoids. In the clinical trials they found doses up to 50mg a day of targin worked well, there was little to no change in pain control & marked improvement of constipation, but over 50mg a day didn't control pain in the same way & caused a lot of side effects, while taking part Targin & part Oxycodone CR to make up dose reduced the effect of Targin to help constipation, so pretty useless really. Naloxone in small dosage is an opioid antagonist -(stopping binding of Oxycodone to opioid receptors) in the gut, but not strong enough to cross blood-brain barrier. In 50mg dose & upward it not only affects local opioid receptors (gut), but crosses the blood-brain barrier affecting the opioid receptors of central nervous system- therefore stopping Oxycodone from binding with these receptors, that stops the analgesia effect needed in first place. So with that said, it is probably a good choice for those on lower dosage Oxycontin, but for those of us on higher dose it will cause withdrawal & is pretty much useless to control pain. KJB you made a comment about overdose that killed someone being 4 x normal dose, i dont know who you talking about but if its in reply to Johns post you need to read it properly! John was talking about doctors in US not wanting to prescribe Opioid painkillers, his son was told a single Oxycontin could could kill him...

I presume this was to scare him that he shouldn't take Opioids for pain relief (not 100% sure on that though). His son was prescribed Motrin x4 daily which is an anti inflammatory-Ibuprofin & resulted in his son getting an ulcer! Im on the fence about Targin, im unable to take it as my dosage is to high, but I would consider trying it if i was on a lower than 50mg a day dose, as i had a bowel obstruction 2 yrs ago & its not fun at all! I had a nasogastric tube to try & break it up, was throwing up fecal matter, sick as a dog, in excruciating pain. I ended up having to be rushed into surgery & gutted like a fish, came out of anaesthetic screaming, the pain was so bad! Spent 3 days in ICU with pain specialist not leaving my side (i couldnt take tablets as i couldnt keep anything down) trying to get enough IV pain killers into me to control the pain. I contracted MRSA (hospital superbug), turned septic & nearly died. Had to give me 10 bags of blood, was on IV antibiotics for 2 months & an abscess formed 2mm from my spinal cord. Had surgery to remove abscess, 10cm of tissue around it & between 3 vertebrae (now have arthritis in there) from that. All that healed & was ok but the muscles that were cut for surgery split open & i have a massive hernia (waiting to have surgery for that now) hopefully they will be able to cut over the 15cm scar i have from bowel op or it will be another huge scar to add to the many. So if I had an option to try, that may help prevent a bowel obstruction YES i would try it!!! There are junkies on here definitely, but there are also a lot of legitimate people in terrible pain like myself. This forum is a voice for us to find information, discuss our problems & support each other, lets keep it that way.

You are all correct. Cancer patients and others with severe pain should not have to suffer because some are drug addicts. Very poor decision. This "addiction-phobia" mentality is nuts and makes innocent people suffer.

A few years ago the the state of Tennessee did the same with Opana vs oxymorphone when I pushes back I found that most doctor's did not know a generic version excited and that if the word Opana was on the script at all the pharmacy had to prescribe the plastic.. out of all pharmacist I talked to at time only one told me of the generic version and explained the A.B. rating system I had to have the doctor write oxymorphone only on the script. Easy enough I thought... what a joke ... no pharmacy carried or would order except for one I finally found. Which ment stuck with rude and over controlling pharmacy for a couple years sadly however heart burn gone with in a couple months! I have not looked into anything else but possible could have something out there with same situation hopefully! I will pass on info if I come across it. I more year left of a dictator-n-chief sadly I think it's gonna still be a fight after to many people are not educated and only believe the b.s. hype that they here. Sadly they dont know the true meaning of the word addiction either.. sure cronic pain patients Need Medicine.. however we are not mentally addicted.. our bodies become chemically dependent.. However, anyone could say the same for the morning cup of coffee the morning routine they use or tylenol... anything that helps a person is what they will use... do that make them a JUNKIE? People need educated.. let's take a baseball bat and beat them till they are bruised.. then hit it over and over after a year give them 2 days of correct meds for pain.. then take it away... wonet if they would take it like we are now? So sick of the political correct society that does not allow any mistakes either did we produce a generation of robots am I living in a nightmare? Where is common-sense? Keep educating the useful *****s I am old enough to not care what people think however when it affects me and loved ones push back is needed.. the more education the better I learned you talk polite but some people it still goes right over their head.. one lady told my mother "Anyone that needs medicine should be in a home" My mother shor back said I had been working 15 years and taking care of my children. So am I supposed to be in home and give my children away.. however would loose job and be homeless no home would take me without pay!.. I am deeply saddened how ignorant people have become.. one lady said "My mother didn't need to goto doctor with six kids etc..." I asked if her mom took a cough syrup over the counter at that.. she started to remember alot of cough syrup... I said Hello? That was laudnum (sp?) Strong and not regulated wow they had relief no wonder they had abilities to do all they did back then! Also percocet was called PERCODAN. Come on... people that have addiction problems is not new... if people wanna feel high they use whatever they can.. and been for 1000's of years.. read history books... the 1 percent of addicts did not blow us up... they did not all die obviously we are still here... how did we increase after Woodstock seriously! Sorry Ranting felt gratifying.

If the formula isn't changed back to the original then the result is more overdosing because pain pill addicts have turned to illicit drugs. This is a lesser of 2 evils here because the users are going to use until they want help but by changing the ingredients the users now have no clue of the strength or what it's cut with.

The other side effect is the billions of dollars going to drug dealers & our enemies in the middle east that can't wait to send the purest opiates on earth to the USA, we're under attack on another front which is our youth or next generation.

The damage done by users turning to illicit drugs & the needle is much more expensive when all of the costs are tallied up but the government in their feeble attempt to fix a problem have created another set of problems while funding terrorism & causing a market on the streets to explode.

I won't even go into the known carcinogens that are now in the new formula & for the people that really need these drugs it's another problem so more violence on the streets due to everyone wanting in on the products to uncontrolled doses from street dealers when the users knew the dose they were taking with the original oxycodone & we're funding the very people that want us dead, this money funds terrorism as the middle east produces some of the best opiates in the world & the Taliban along with other terrorists are enjoying unlimited funding to carry out attacks on the civilized world.

There is an easy way out for opiate addicts it's called suboxone which fools the brain by filling in the opiate receptors while the naloxone pulls the opiates out of the brain. Once the user has a grip they can switch to subutex which is suboxone without the naloxone so the brain's opiate receptors are kept level but there is a higher chance of relapse because no naloxone means the user can still feel high without going into withdraw.

Strange that all of these kids start out smoking or using marijuana products before stepping up to opiates, people don't realize that the THC content of modern marijuana is 2 or 2.5 time higher than in the 60s & 70s so this isn't your mom & pops hippy marijuana, this is a strong product & left wing policies have made a deal with the devil by making access to marijuana much easier but the money coming into the states is too good, but what use is the next generation going to be?

Our chickens are coming home to roost & I know a lot of amish families we're close with but they don't have all the problems this generation has so I wonder why that is? They have mental illness but no violence in their community so maybe we should look at what they're doing as it's clearly working better than what we're doing. The Amish don't steal or do drugs or kill in the name of God while we can't say the same of others so why is it the 500,000 Amish in the USA can get it right but we can't? I'm sure someone will dismiss them as religious freaks that answer to a higher power but from where I'm standing that's not such a bad thing.

We couldn't even field an Army if we needed a draft because this generation is obese, no skills, using some form of dope, they will be the first generation that we didn't leave the country better off than is was handed to us so maybe we should look at ourselves too.

I've seen opiate dependency & helped a lot of people get to a doctor that put them on suboxone then subutex & completely clean, being a pool player for a long time I seen a lot of people getting addicted so I felt it was my duty to help them clean up with a long law enforcement background plus military I feel looking out for our people & making this country better at the same time is a duty.

Change the formula back to the original & you'll see illicit drug use go down significantly with less overdoses, less medical costs, & impact street dealers & stop paying for terrorism, if this doesn't happen this wildfire will only get worse.
