How Long After You Stop Suboxone Do You Have Withdrawal Symptoms? (Page 43)

Updated

My 63y/o mother survived chemo and radiation for throat cancer but was unable to stop the morphine 15mg twice a day without horrible withdrawal symptoms. Her MD put her on Suboxone 8mg/2mg once a day in June. She even took half the strip on most days and the doctor was very pleased and anticipated that she would be able to stop altogether in November. She unfortunately had a stroke 14 days ago and has been in the hospital. The first 7 days she was confused from the stroke but now she is weak and forgetful but is no longer disoriented. She told me tonight that she thought she needed her Suboxone. She said she thought she was going thru withdrawal. I was floored. She is not having any outward signs of withdrawal: no back/stomach pain, no nausea/vomiting, no sweating or tremors. Isn't 14 days long enough for the Suboxone to be completely out of your system and for withdrawal symptoms to have come and gone??? Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

I was on 85mg methadone and the doctor prescribed 120mg of oral morphine and some clonadine to help with with with withdrawals. I barely had any problems or withdrawal symptoms. I think the clonadine was important! Btw I was on methadone for 5 years,

Hi Lisa! I don't have a kidney disease, I have Interstitial Cystitis; chronic inflammation of the bladder wall & other ugly urinary tract issues but SO many things can affect the outcome of your drug panel. You used the word "dropped" referring to your drug panel so I'm thinking it's a U/A, right? Have y'all thought about doing blood work? I'm pretty sure next to a U/A the blood work is gonna be least expensive compared to hair or saliva evaluations. Those are so expensive! Obviously something about your disease or a medicine you're taking is affecting your outcome.....

Amy, I am so proud of you for your strength and determination! Day 6 is great, and you're right, don't go back now. My issue is I never really took subs as prescribed...just enough to stop withdrawals. Please let me know how long it took you to feel normal/better/able to smile/etc. I want to stop too...I just want to know what to expect. I take Aleve for pain around the clock n that helps some. My nose pours snot n I have the worst headaches period. I'm in a dilemma bc It seems like people think that doctors who prescribe Subs n want u on them long term want $$$ n those that say it should be quick detox want the $$ too bc you are at a higher relapse rate. I'm getting a divorce as well ...just got that broken to me today so I don't know if it's a good time for me to taper or what to do. I just feel like I'm lost. I'm going next week to a doctor for a second opinion regarding his feelings on the medication and how long I should be on subs...I'm just ready to man up and throw them in the trash or shall I say woman up and thrown in the trash!

Hey, I was 9 years on suboxone. And 2 months ago I decided to stop - I end up in the hospital. Doc. Proscibed me a gaba and trazadone. It's has been 2 months - still can't sleep and joints pain is killing me. With trazadone I can sleep 3-4hrs.. gaba is helping me with some pain and restless legs (300mgx2/d). But I am worrying why it take so long, or I became addicted to gaba? So tired.

Mynameismyname, I am a year off of Suboxone and have stayed free of all opiates and opioids. I still suffer today as much as I did the first three months off. If you take the time to read the most recent post first and read about 200 of them you will learn more than your Doctor knows about safely reducing your withdrawal pain. Brace yourself for a long recovery.

Swamp I've encountered basically the same situation. I'm on oxycodone 30mg 4xdaily w/percocet 10mg @6hrs for breakthrough pain. Twice I had meds stolen and had to take subs for 2 days prior to my appointment. I was able to take my meds, with no problems, working effectively, upon filling them the next day. However, a smaller dose worked, (Good for me) for about the 1st week afterwards.
It's not going to work for those that have been on Suboxone, for any length of time. Good luck!

Hello Tommy. I really understand how tired and worn down you feel. For me the migrating pain, burning skin, restless leg and fatigue have been relentless. I have learned so much from these posts that has been helpful and my group (yes, I have a TEAM of physicians including the addictionologist, Internet, sleep medicine/neurologist, and a pharmacologist/cardiologist!) of treating physicians. I was prescribed oxycodone at a fairly low dose (10mg once to three times/day off and on for three years) of oxycodone to manage back pain and lower extremity neuropathy associated with three major lumbar spine surgeries. I stopped the oxycodone on November 24, 2015. I expericended severe acute withdrawal and required inpatient detox management for 4 weeks. To treat the acute withdrawals, I was started on an initial dose of 8 mg buprenorphene as Suboxone and quickly tapered to 2 mg tid. From there I gradually tapered down to 0.06 mm (1/16th of a 2 mgm film) ever 24 hours. I stopped it finally on Feb 8, 2016. I had about 3 weeks of what felt very severe with multiple nights without sleep, severe restless legs, general restlessness, intense burning skin, intense join, foot, hand and extremity pain, and hypertension of 210/115 with heart rates of 100 or more. To manage my symptoms I am on Clonidine 0.01 mg q AM and 0.2 mg q HS, Buspar 30 mg 3 times a day, Cymbalta 30 mg tid, Mirapex 0.5 mg tid, Lisinopril 40 mg daily, metoprolol 25 mg tid, naproxen 500 mg twice per day, Gabapentin 300 mg tid (increasing dose to max of 909 mg tid), melatonin 4 mg 2 hours before bedtime, and Trazodone 100 mg before bed. In addition I am taking amino acids, omega 3. 6, 9 fatty acids, multivitamin, NAC, and calcium. All of this makes the symptoms tolerable but they still flare up and I am in my recliner for a day or two. I have gone to a heated pool a couple of times a week. I have done much better since I no longer expect to get progressively better day after day. I am grateful for the good days and accepting of the difficult ones. I go to meetings and I have a sponsor. Everything I am doing helps and all together it doesn't cure it.

I wish you strength, endurance, and tolerance. If I can offer any further information I am pleased to do so. Medical research or clinical writings on getting off of buprenorphene or managing the long term withdrawal symptoms is very, very scarce. These posts have been very helpful as has my associate the pharmacologist. Hang in there and be very kind to yourself.

Withdrawal is no picnic. I think the key here is are you taking the meds for acute pain, or were you taking them recreationally? It sounds like many had major pain to begin with. From the sound of the suffering, it might be better to stay on them depending on your age.

I went almost 30 yrs without an aspirin but I was young to withdraw at 30, and at 63 am totally different. How to manage chronic pain without opioid pain med's is a challenge. If NSAIDS were safe I am sure we would all be happier. I know it took me almost a year to sleep and feel good after 10 yrs of methadone and other assorted benzos, but again I was young. What's the alternative surgery? Only to start the cycle all over again.

Can it be done? Yes, anything can, but managing chronic pain is the question. If there was an alternative we wouldn't be on pain med's to begin with. Push on through those who are not in pain for those who are...not sure what the answer is but stay away from Methadone that was awful stuff.

Well, when will this never ending battle finally end??? It's been 93 days now. I can't go a day without taking naltrexone, lyrica, Tylenol, multiple vitamins, aleve, and an anti depressant. I seriously feel like death today. Forgot my meds at home and was at my fiancé's all weekend. What a night mare. It gets better every day but today I am in misery. SUBOXONE IS THE DEVIL AND I AM TELLING YOU THE SOONER OFF THAT S*** THE BETTER, SERIOUSLY. I feel like crap without all my meds and I'm 93 days. When will I ever feel like a human again!!?!?!?!?!?!!? I was only on subs for a year and a half. Tommyc, still having really bad anxiety without the naltrexone, 93 days is that normal!? Are you still having to take it?

Rebekah: I have passed my one year anniversary on April 13th, 2016. I had no idea I would be sick this long. This past month has been very instructional and also produced more bad news. During the time I was taking Suboxone I developed a neurological disease which caused the constant burning skin and organs. I was admitted to the Hospital where they could give me some narcotics and try to mask it. We found out that I am allergic to Oxycodone and hydrocodone. Both relieved the pain but caused severe hiccups. Morphine worked without causing anything but relief.

I met with Dr. Clauw noted as one of the top five pain Doctors in the world. He said it will take a minimum of two years to get the dopamine working which will relieve the pain. I am not back on narcotics as that is a major decision for me as I will be 70 in July and would most likely be on them for the rest of my life. I still have sore muscles which can be there one day and not another. They call it "Brain Pain Syndrome". The pain has to be blocked in the brain before any signals to the damaged nerve fibers. The Doctors believe my CNS broke down and did not realize it until I came off of the Suboxone.

Now to your question on Nolexterone. The VIVITROL brochure recommends one take the shot for a year. You are on the oral pill and I am not sure what they recommend.

Have you ever wondered about the posters who feel great after two weeks and then we never hear from them again? I often wonder if it finally hit them and they ended back on the subs.

I had an old timer tell me that the PAWS will last a lifetime because of the brain damage. He said he is thankful for the good days and knows more bad ones are ahead. The longer time goes by and the longer I research what has happened to Suboxone users the more I am convinced this medicine is more pain and trouble than it is worth.

Not many people make it to 90 days. Congratulations on fighting the battle.

In my case, what a price to pay for a simple shoulder surgery fifteen years ago. I was a fool not to research OxyContin and then Suboxone. I hate the thought of being on Opana the rest of my life just to feel somewhat normal. It is a big decision to make. I have two children, both Doctors, who do not understand the severity of the pain I am enduring. Both want me to find an alternative to opiates. I have seen nine specialists in this field over the last year and they all tell me the same thing. "your brain and CNS are damaged." There is not a method to cure my pain, only medications to block it. The GI issues with the non opiates are horrific for those who have trouble taking them. The Toxicologist who prescribed me the Suboxone and left me on it for five years eventually had his license suspended.

The sooner one gets off of Suboxone the better chance they have for recovery.

Suboxone or subutex works wonders for me. Ask your doctor for a nerve pill to go with it like Xanax or klonopin it togher works wonders too. There is no need for those other hard core narcotics I know pain. I'm 42 I ruptured disk in my back L4 and L5 I have had surgery I have had lung surgery and I had a bad wreck two months ago breaking my C5 and I stick with subutex and klonopin and neurontin it helps me. I hope you find this helpful I have crushed my ankles also. But my main reason I'm on here is too tell all of y'all good bye and good luck. I'm sad depressed and lonley and I can't take it no more. Been married twice and I just keep getting hurt by women. They think cause I got nice things I'm rich but I'm not. I give and give and they don't give nothing back they lie and take up with other men. It's too much for me so good bye good luck and God bless

No, subutex is great when taking properly. I know how you feel going through a divorce my first one almost killed me. Then I got married again just on the rebound it lasted 6 days. My doc gives me klonopin too and restoril it works great also Wellbutrin so I know your pain.

Unfortunately the sweats and body aches at night can go on for months. I find an Indian herb called Ashwaghanda helps at night. If her dr is willing tramadol is a mild opioid and helps reduce withdrawal symptoms. Dr's prescribed this med when it was new on the market and now they aren't as much anymore. Blame America and the war on drugs. They couldn't make money off of the people who use illicit drugs and buy illegal pills so they came up with suboxone so they can prescribe it to the masses. I was given it after being clean for 7 months from painkillers (had back problems) and a hospital put me on suboxone for pain management. I regret it and years later I can't get off of this crap.
