Metoprolol Withdrawal (Page 115)

Updated

i've been taking metoprolol for several years as partial treatment for high blood pressure. through diet and exercise, i've lowered my BP to the point my doctor says drop the metoprolol.

i did, 3 days ago, and i'm soooo tired, dizzy, irritable, and my vision is blurred.

is this withdrawal? how long will it last?

i remember starting this medication was terrible to get used to. it appears that stopping it is just as bad.

The 1/4 pill doesn’t really give me side effects. Maybe a little rebound tachy the day after.

Was today better for you?

Today was relatively better still get that feeling about breathing slowly in the evening for a few mins and had slight pointy pain near collarbone for a few minutes. I was speaking to my cousin who is in 3rd year of medical school even he said that metoprolol withdrawal effects don’t last longer than a week or two i said yeah right. I took it for 4.5 months and i know what i am going through

I don’t think any doctor realizes what this drug can do to people with sensitive systems. And it’s not so much that the drug is in your body (obviously it’s not) but it’s literally jacked our CNSs. And that’s what we have to heal from

What baffles me is how do we have new symptoms or effects after quitting it ? I agree and they blame the anxiety for what metoprolol did.

Metoprolol increases gaba in the brain and desensitizes the central nervous system. The body adjusts to that and stops creating its own gaba. Once metoprolol is taken away, the body now has to readjust to creating its own gaba production and resensitizing to the adrenaline it’s receiving. It seems perfectly normal to me that it would do that. It sucks that it has to happen! But seems like a normal adjustment. Any chemical that you put in your body your body has to adjust to it being there. So when to take it away it has to adjust to the fact that it’s no longer there.

I have been doing better on that front from last two days but developed a new symptom 10 days ago which is dull pain on right shoulder and sometimes between shoulder blades it isnt painful but just feels weird and idk warm . Being a hypochondriac ended up googling and the worst case scenario is lung cancer. Are you aware of anyone who had similar symptoms? How are you feeling nowadays?

I am not sure how adrenaline rushes feel like can you describe it? I hope you were able to sleep peacefully . Dizziness is a very common symptom it happens to me like once or twice a week.

Re: RV (# 2289) Expand Referenced Message

Yeah I fell asleep pretty fast. I was reading a book and I felt like the pages weren’t focusing. Just a tiny bit and then the adrenaline just feels like that sensation where you get scared and your body feels tingly. Usually my HR goes way up but it didn’t last night. I hate those feelings and while i do feel better today, I kinda still feel wonky in the head. Foggy head and like on the verge of dizziness.

I have had those rushes as well still have it occasionally. Wonky head is bad when it happens. How was your day? 10 days to go for your appointment as well.

The tachy is random. Couple times a week maybe

The channel blocker I have is 30mg (cardizem) and I split that in four. Although I’m reading and it says not to split but it’s not an extended release tablet. Oh well, I’m def not taking a whole pill after the whole beta blocker ordeal

Try not to stress. You are breathing and the oximeter is telling you your oxygen levels are fine. Your body will heal! It’s just going to take some time

I don’t know what’s going on tonight. I felt good all day and then as the evening went on i started feeling these super weird sensations. Kinda like dizzy, can’t get a good breathe in, adrenaline surges, super funky looking at a screen and I’m really trying not to freak out. My oximeter is at 99% so I know the oxygen is fine. Of course my first thought is pulmonary embolism or something crazy. I so over these weird dizzy, weird chest, adrenaline sensations I keep getting. I’m wondering if I should go ahead and make an appt with my primary and see if they can refer me out to neuro or endocrinologist. I mean my ENT just did a brain scan and all was normal so not sure if I neuro does any other type of tests but this is driving me nuts. I just want to feel normal!!! Can this really still be effects of the beta blocker? Is this a result of taking a channel blocker a couple of times? I’m at my wits end here.

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2294) Expand Referenced Message

Thats what i was wondering where did you disappear suddenly . The way your are describing your symptoms is exactly what i am going through except the dizziness. Weird chest feeling is something that no doctor has the answer for. I got a d dimer test done for pulmonary embolism results were normal and it was purely done for my satisfaction. Today i have a new symptom - dry nose. I have recently understood how important a normal day is

Re: RV (# 2296) Expand Referenced Message

Well at least dry nose isn’t a big deal lol. I’ve had the d dimer test a couple times too. And scans, all have been of course clear. I just don’t understand all these symptoms when everything is supposedly “fine” these dizzy/vertigo sensations are so annoying and I try not to freak out. I don’t know what other dr or tests I should have done. I see cardio in a week.

Re: RV (# 2298) Expand Referenced Message

Yeah I know what you mean. It’s like do we keep getting checked out by different doctors or just believe we are ok and it’s going to take time.

Today was a good day except I decided to have a boba tea and now going to bed I’m getting some adrenaline/tachy. I’m sure it’s from the caffeine. I Have been caffeine free since March so I’m sure it’s affecting my system. Other than that, it’s been good.

How about you?

Do you ever feel like it’s just the night time that’s weird. Like I feel fine all day but then winding down for bed I start feeling funky. Is it just because I’m anticipating it so the anxiety is there? How can you feel fine all day and then at bed feel all the weird feelings?

How have you been Julyia?

Re: Txcandy1 (# 2299) Expand Referenced Message

I really dont know whats fine anymore. I dont think i feel like pre-metoprolol not even a day if there is nothing there is anxiety, if there are physical symptoms there is anxiety but i do okayish at best. Yes night time is usually difficult for me if i am meeting some friends i feel like not going home because what if something happens. Breathing slows down during night time as well.
