Metoprolol: Do The Side Effects Improve Eventually?

I started Metoprolol this Monday after the cardiologist prescribed it because of being in the ER with extremely fast heartbeats. After a heart ultrasound, chest xray, blood tests, and wearing a holter moniter, they found there was nothing wrong with my actual heart other than the fact that I have a mild heart arrhythmia which they believe was brought out by a virus I also had. Now that I have started the medicine, I have had dizziness, nausea, sever mood swings, insomnia, and anxiety. The cardiologists' nurse said these were all normal, but it seems a little excessive to me. I am on the lowest possible dose (25MG) minus the possibility of cutting the pill in half and I take it once a day. I do not have high blood pressure and am young and not overweight (5ft and 105lbs). Has anyone else had all these side effects, do they go away?

Those are all normal side effects that Metoprolol can cause and they will usually last approximately 4 to 6 weeks, while your body adjusts to the medication. After that, they should start to taper off in severity.

If they don't, then you should make sure to let your doctor know, so that you can try other treatment options.

I recently had a severe bout of vertigo and spent some time in the hospital. When i came home they prescribed Metoprolol tart 25 mg. I started having severe vision problems. When I would read all the letters became jumbled. At first I thought it was a result of my vertigo, then tonight I took another Metroplol and finally made the connection. They say not to stop this medicine suddenly, but I can't see myself taking any more of it. I am going to call my doctor in the morning. As I write this I have to close my left eye to make sense of the keyboard.

I was put on Metoporol due to an irregular heart beat and slightly elevated bp...after taking it for. 5days I stopped taking it...the side effects were HORRIBLE ...so far it's been 36 hours and the withdrawals aren't as bad...I'm mad that I even started it...my advice go the natural way and lower your bp and heart rate..

I was on Metoprolol 25mg for 4 yrs. I didn't notice anything different at the beginning of taking this medication, besides educing my palpatations. I had numerous test done and my cardiologist could find nothing wrong besides PVCs. In the last year of taking it my heart rate was always below 60 I had vertigo all the time!! Numbness in my hands, anxiety so severe I thought I was losing my mind!! I found a new cardiologist who had me stop cold turkey and within 3 days all of those symptoms have disappeared!! Now the side effects of stopping are not to good either. I first had a rapid heart rate and more PVCs, it's been a month now but I'm starting to feel better. Metoprolol is a horrible medication and I wouldn't recommend it to any one!!

My heart doctor took me off metoprolol yesterday. How long does it take for the side effects to finally leave your system. Cough and breathing problems in addition to other things.

What was the virus you had? Because I take metoprolol as well and have insomnia, itching, headaches, fatigue and so on.

I was prescribed Metoprolol by my GP to try reduce my ectopic heart rhythm, but after 2 (apparently small) doses I am already stopping. Yes, I'm not feeling any more salsa beats but my bpm has dropped to 50-55, I'm nauseous, whoozy and faint, sweating and breathless. Because I'm also epileptic I keep having moments when I feel like I'm about to slip into an aura, but that's quite a similar sensation to feeling faint so might have nothing to do with epilepsy. Still very unsettling!

I got off the medication and prayed God healed me! the medication is dangerous
I started back at the gym for cardio exercise, that's the best way to treat it.

Stopped taking metoprolol succ 25mg slow release. How long before I should see some improvement? The cardiologist stopped without weaning. Could there be side effects for stopping abruptly. Having horrible pains and discomfort in body.

I never answer to these but this one I will say a word...I was put on metoptolol 25 mg 2xdaily.after too many ER visits from panic atta is and racing heart. I got to say....I do not take the dose I'm giving so I stretch them along. I may take 1a day if I remember it. it they are a little Mira le pill as I have not been to ER since I started them 2 yrs ago. I haven't as known of any real side effects but haven't really studied what they are or can be. So maybe you should not dwell of those that are normally given .I think if so I wouldn't think much of it as it's a whole lot better than a racing heart for hours thinking your a goner... right. ?.

Two weeks on 50 mg Metoprolol and I feel dizzy upon waking from sleep, lightheaded, concentration problems. Pulse markedly lowered, but high blood pressure barely improved. Still at 140 to 160 / 85 to 90. Misery without the benefits. I will find other BP treatment as pharmaceuticals are a joke!
