I have been testing positive for benzos and i cant figure out why. I have been taking suboxone & Ondansetron & promethazine. Thats it. If i fail another drug test, then my doctor is gonna kick me out. If anybody knows of any common substances, prescription or over the counter medications please inform me. Thanks

Re: DSS (# 261) Expand Referenced Message

Thankyou for your information. However, I went over this problem with two separate doctors and a pharmacist, Not One of them were aware or had even heard of this happening. Even they did a thorough web search and could find nothing to substantiate my clams. my sole purpose for informing the FDA was in the hopes of helping anyone that ran into this problem/situation, Because I was not aware that the FDA already knew of this. And if its so widely known, It stuns me that no doctor or pharmacist knew that this could happen. Btw. After having many urine test done and failing every one for Benzos, And insisting that I had not taken any type of Benzos, They suggested a blood test SPECIFICALLY for Benzos, And I failed that also. But I hope this becomes more widely known and that doctors become more aware, So that others do not have to face the same frustrations that I did. Again Thankyou for your comment and interest. It was helpful and informative.

Re: Lia P (# 254) Expand Referenced Message

The fda knows this already. They are well aware of the many drugs that can cause false positives during a simple uds. I do not know what you expect the FDA to do about this, other than put it online, which it probably already is. Anyway, urine is the most common sample type used for drug testing by employers. A urinalysis will show the presence of a drug in the system after the drug effects have worn off; however, the length of time varies by drug. Typical urine drug tests for employment purposes may screen for amphetamines or methamphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, opiates like oxycodone or heroin, but cannot differentiate ALL drugs, therefore they can often show false positives. For way more specific testing in this case, there is a massive amount of literature on this subject freely available online. Just ask google and you will get a ton of information on false positives etc. Sadly, urine drug screening tests are very simple. They are usually a 5 or 9 drug screen thing which is dipped in the urine and shows the most commonly abused type of drugs. In case of important situations, ie keeping your job or staying out of prison, demand a more specific test. The immunoassay or urine test is performed first and is often used as a screening method. If the immunoassay is negative, no further action is required, and the results are reported as negative. If the sample is positive, an additional confirmatory GC-MS analysis is performed. The more specific GC/MS, (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) is used as a confirmatory test to identify individual drug substances or metabolites and quantify the amount of the substance. Confirmatory tests, such as GC-MS should be utilized prior to reporting positive drug test results. If your company or parole officer or whoever is testing you, will not pay for this test, I think in some cases, like listed above, make it well worth paying for the extra cost yourself. I should think that if you are vindicated, I should think restitution would be likely. If not sue them. I would. Hope this helps.

The only way to prove your innocence would be by a gas-chrotronomy test or gas-spectronomy; I forget which. it is more expensive than the simple uds, urine drug screening test, but will definitely find your culprit. Demand the gc gs testing. Take the diphenhydramine and get tested, stay off it for a week and get tested again. Then compare results...its def the diphenhydramine giving the false positive. Whoever said it's not is a fool and needs to learn how to do the below. Diphenhydramine can be quantified in blood, plasma, or serum. Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) can be used with electron ionization on full scan mode as a screening test. GC-MS or GC-NDP can be used for quantification. Rapid urine drug screens using immunoassays based on the principle of competitive binding may show false-positive methadone results for people having ingested diphenhydramine. Most likely the test they are using is one of the standard 5 or 9 urine drug screens. Diphenhydramine already can cause false positives as methadone, sort of near codeine. I would assume, rightly I think, that the interaction of all of the things you are taking is making it seem to be codeine. A gs ms would definitely prove you are not taking codeine. Demand that test. But, I warn you if you did take codeine you are going to be caught. Also, this is only possible if they still have your sample showing codeine. They must test that sample with gs ms & it will show everything in your system and be specific about the amount, possible abuses, everything. Hope this helps you.

Re: dee (# 12) Expand Referenced Message

Benadryl is the most likely culprit there. It will show as a benzo. Also, I see you are taking a lot of herbal stuff. some of them show strange positives as well... I suggest you research all of them, but I know for sure about Benadryl.

I wonder if he/she meant 3-4 grams of Tylenol. I hope that's what they meant anyway!

Re: jayme (# 90) Expand Referenced Message

Did you ever get any responses? Seroquel and Dextromethorphan are obvious culprits, as they both cause false positives. But you are taking a lot of meds, could be an interaction causing it. I hope you are okay now!

ATTENTION: After going to my Suboxone doctor for a few months now and failing EVERY one of my drug tests for benzos, I realized the ONLY thing that I had changed was being put on Celexa. After searching for any solution as to why I could be failing because I knew I wasn't taking any benzos, I came upon this site. So pretty much I challenged my doctor to take me off of the Celexa to prove that had to be what was making me fail all of my drug tests... Soooo... today, one week later and with NO CELEXA... I FINALLY PASSED MY DRUG TEST!! I can say with 100% confidence that YES, Celexa CAN MAKE YOU TEST POSITIVE FOR BENZOS. I DONT CARE WHAT ANY DOCTOR HAS TO SAY. I HAVE PROOF IN BLACK AND WHITE!!!

I'm also reporting this to the FDA in hopes of helping others who truly want help and are struggling with this problem! I'm so thankful to the people who posted on here, because it gave me a place to start, and with all your posts the doctor had to at least consider the possibility. And I knew I was telling the truth but to be able to prove it to my doctor that for #1 I wasn't lying and for #2 that I wasn't crazy was all worth it!! Thank you to all that posted! By the way, Celexa has helped tremendously with my depression. It's wonderful for that purpose, but doctors are going to have to be made aware, maybe ahead of time that you will possibly show up in your blood or urine test for benzos. So if that's a concern for you I would most definitely ask for a before Celexa drug test then the after Celexa drug test! Good Luck!

I took a drug test today and failed for benzos. The only thing I took was midol (containing pyrilamine maleate). Can this cause a false positive?

I am on vivitrol and recently tested positive for benzos. I also take trazodone as well. I have been on trazodone for a while and never tested positive for anything, that is until I started taking vivitrol? Is naltrexone a benzodiazepine?

I tested false positive for Benzodiazepine twice and during this swab testing process I also drew an "invalid" result in the THC column... I don't smoke marijuana and the only antidepressants I take for a sleep disorder are Mirtazapine and Trazodone (30mg; 100mg) nightly. Does anybody have info as to why this problem occurs? My meds are Dr prescribed and this conundrum is presently standing in the way of my much needed employment.

I tested positive on a 7 & 12-panel drug test for benzodiazepine, yet at the hospital came up clean. What could have caused this other than faulty tests?

So I have been in a Suboxone program now and am doing great. I only take what is prescribed to me and I have had no problems with my drug screens. Last week I was sick and took Flonase and sinus medication and my drug test came up positive for phenobarbital and benzodiazepines. I know I have not taken any of these medications. So can Flonase give a false positive for these?

I am at a complete loss here.

Was on IR Seroquel 300mg for years, got pregnant and had to fight my insurance for coverage. My OB & midwife switched me to extended release during the insurance fight. A few days later I had to get my first-trimester screen (urine tox and blood work).

When my results came in last week my doctor called and said that they found benzos in my urine tox. I have never taken anything under the benzo category (ever), was never interested...and especially not being pregnant. But somehow I still tested positive. The only thing I take is Seroquel (immediate release until about 6-8 weeks pregnant) and then extended release for the past 2-3 weeks, and prenatal vitamins. I haven’t even taken OTC meds to explain the false positive.

I’m terrified and mortified. Benzos in my urine could mean horrible things for me, and my baby. I want to find some type of definitive proof or at least a few accounts of people experiencing this before my next appointment at 14 weeks next month.

I was on seroquel (immediate release) until a few weeks ago due to my insurance being less than stellar and refusing to cover it during pregnancy.

Doc had me switched to XR, which is fine and dandy. But, when I went for my first trimester urine and blood tests I came back positive for Benzos?!? I haven’t taken anything (and I mean ANYTHING) but seroquel xr (300mg nightly) and prenatal vitamins.

I’m totally freaking out. I have no idea what to do next.

I’ve tested positive for codeine 4 times on my drug tests at my IOP and couldn’t figure out what it was and finally figured out what it was it’s the diphenhydramine that i was taking along with my seroquel for sleep. I’m also on Suboxone maintenance and thyroid meds and zocor. When i stoped taking the diphenhydramine, my urines went back to normal the only problem is the lab said there is no way that diphenhydramine could make my UA positive for codien the lab said codeine is codeine they can’t do anything no more tests nothing. This is not far i didn’t use any Codeine i feel so upset because i feel there is no way to prove i didn’t use. Anybody else ever have this problem if so please help me figure out what other tests could be done.
