What Is Stronger Dilaudid Or Oxycontin 40 Mg? (Page 19)

Updated

I have been on Dilaudid for over 2 years now and I can't seem to get off of it. I'm under a doctor's care, but anyone who is on it knows it's very addicting! I think like everybody else, it's no good if you take it orally. It's only effective other ways. I always run out of Dilaudid before my prescription is ready to refill and recently I filled a script for oxycontin 40 mg to see if they could replace my 4 mg Dilaudid. However, I took 1/2 of a 40 mg. and felt nothing. An hour later I took my 4 mg Dilaudid and it seems to have worked. But they are very short lived, that's why for chronic pain they like to give these stupid time release pain pills. How many mg.'s does equal the same amount of Dilaudid? I also would like to know if anyone has ever tapered off of Dilaudid? You get really sick when you try to get off of it, really intense vomiting and stomach pain that lasts forever. I have never stuck it out, I always end up in the emergency room. All they do is give me a pain shot of Dilaudid and a prescription for it as well and send me home. They think there is something wrong with something else. I have even tried to tell them but they either don't want to get involved because I'm under a Dr.'s care or they are just stupid. I hope someone has the best kicking advice, I'd rather be straight or just be one of those once in a while users (RIGHT)!!!

Deb,

Being as opinionated as you are and condemning those who you believe are just as opinionated as you makes you a hypocrite. How dare you! Pain is subjective and is different for everyone who experiences it. Do not condemn those and do not judge those. The only reason you do is to make yourself feel superior and it is tacky. Get off YOUR SELF-RIGHTEOUS HORSE. Everyone has a right to their opinion without catching s*** for it by another person who suffers from pain. You are part of the problem. Capice?

Sweetie,

Take what people write with a grain of salt. Some here are part of the problem and not part of the solution. The judge and condemn their very own kind, people who suffer from pain and act as though no one experience pain like they do. Pain is subjective, how one person feels pain can be very different than from another person feels pain. People who are knowledgeable and helpful are the ones who are trying to help your situation. For instance, I suggested that if you want to wean yourself off of Dilaudid then to obtain Clonidine 0.1 micrograms it will help your blood pressure immensely while you are withdrawing; it will help with most of the withdrawal symptoms so you can still function. Dilaudid withdrawal is so horrendous I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Pot is supposed to be helpful too. I have not tried it so I can not give you my experience. I know when I did use Clonidine I tried 0.3 micrograms to help with the withdrawal. That is my experience - I do not recommend it for you because you are different from me; you may be taking more than I was taking or you may be taking less than I was taking. I just know that due to the withdrawals I do not want to come off Dilaudid. I can't deal with the cravings. I know that they say Suboxone is good for pain but I have also heard it is not good for pain. Best of luck!

Hey folks I take both oxycontin er which is a 12hr time release and oxycodone ir which is for immediate release for breakthrough pain.I swear that this combination is what gave me my new out look on life,so for me I won't try anything else, don't get me wrong I heard a lot of good things about dilaudid,so I think you can use either or.One more thing I'm pretty sure the oxycontin can't be cut the way they make this pill is so it can't be tampered with + it's a time release.

Sweetie,

I am so sorry about your issues with pain, along with every other person who experience chronic pain.

Yours, stuck out to me and I am going to share with you what my good friend does. She was a dentist and got into an accident - not her fault. She refuses to use opiates for her pain - just won't do it. With the legalization in the state she resides, she has research medical marijuana and I am going to share with you what she's told me.

Apparently you can use marijuana without the THC (the part that makes you high) and it is effective with pain - she suffers from Regional Complex Sympathetic Dystrophy and her fingers actually turn white. She uses vapors and such and says it really helps her. She wasn't going to start smoking pot at the age of 42; she is a mother and very responsible and needless to say anti-drug. So for what it is worth, perhaps this is an avenue you may try since all others fail. My biggest issue is if you remove the THC, the active ingredient then why is it illegal in the rest of the states? Doesn't make sense. Anyway, I hope and wish the best for you.

I agree with Ty dilaudid is stronger I've been on both for the past 15 yrs. The best thing to do for chronic pain is to take a time released pain med. (Morphine) along with a break through pain med. either hydromorphone or oxycodone depending on your pain level. I also think that some of these pain meds work different for certain people. I personally take dilaudid and it works perfect on its own and I don't have withdrawals or side effects. When I used to take oxycodone I had instant withdrawals after just a couple of hours. Stick with what works for you.

Shai,

To whom are you directing your response?

Kev,

I am glad you found a combination of medication that works for you. Sometimes that is half the battle. The other half is when you have to justify what you take to others who just don't understand what it is like to have a chronic pain issue. I could try and walk and be in tears and my Dad is such a jerk about me being on pain meds. Can you say "Ignorant?"

Good luck to you!

For anyone trying to get off any opiates... You can take Imodium (or generic brand) to help with your withdrawal symptoms. It has an opioid in it! They worked wonders for me! It doesn't take your symptoms away 100% but I promise, it'll help! Google it and find other information as well! I hope this info helps someone like it did me!

I was in 150 mcgs of Fentanyl Patch plus OxyContin and Percocet for 10 yrs due to chronic pain. I was a zombie! Sure my pain was so much better but that is way too much! I was hospitalized for 3 wks and taken off all. I am now currently taking diluidid long acting 3mgs x2 and short acting 2 mcgs every 4 hrs. Obviously this does not compare but I have my mind back and I'm not sleeping my life away. Do not go on this Patch unless desperate! It is very expensive and addicting and very dangerous! Good luck everyone!

Hi,

Thanks for the providing us with the info on Immodium. I will use it. Do you have any other tips about fending off withdrawals? My stomach is like the ocean back and forth while the hot and cold sweats are just way too numerous. I wish it didn't last so long either. Actually, if I had a wish, I wouldn't be an addict in the first place. Tell me, (I used the patches with the suckers too for several years), did you ever get severely depressed because of the opiates, themselves? I am really struggling with depression/suicide ideation right now.

I am also a chronic pain patient that has been prescribed 8mg Dilaudid and 20mg of oxycontin extended release tablets and they don't do anything at all for my pain. The dilaudid helps for maybe an hour or two but the oxycontin doesn't help at all. I'm starting to wonder if there's anything that works well with my 8mg dilaudid. I'm still waiting for relief for my pain.

You might want to try long acting dilaudid. Please, I really advise not to go on the Fentalyn Patch. It's not worth it in the long run and you are always increasing the dose due to your body becoming numb to the lower dosage.

Now that said it all. Bless you for replying to that one because I would have been a little more verbally harsh.

Hi Wes! Just FYI - it's hydrOmorphone, not hydrAmorphone!:-) I always feel that one should always know how to spell their meds correctly, especially when they're strong, controlled substances. There WILL be occasions when you have to indicate what medications you're taking (e.g., visits to dentist or other doctors) and you wouldn't want any confusion due to a misspelling. All the best! :-)
