This is to Katie and everyone who feels they need to defend themselves to others who label and call them an addict. Well o.k., so we are addicts, but what other choice do we have .... Chronic pain ????. As much as I hate being an addict and I'm sure many others do too, it certainly beats hobbling around, bent over in excruciating, constant chronic pain, not even being able to go swimming and relaxing at the beach cuz hurt so bad and the sand is too hard and it hurts when a wave hits you or playing with your puppy(mine is a Rott/Shepard, she's tough) I hated being an addict so bad I moved away from my easy access in Ft. Lauderdale, away from my doctor and all my friends, and I went cold turkey from 30 mg. of oxycodone x3 and 60 mg. oxycontin x2. Cold Turkey was a horrible mistake, one of the worst mistakes I ever made, a living hell, something I wouldn't recommend to anyone , death would have been a comfort and top it off all the PAIN. It was HORRIBLE, what was I thinking???? I was thinking I don't want to be an addict, that's the same as being a junkie! That's what I was thinking, but that was wrong. Well I lasted one grueling month and I'm here to tell you I cried tears of joy when the pharmacist handed me my oxy scripts! I may have even been drooling,,,just kiddin.' Anyway, all I'm saying is, for those of you who feel guilty about taking opiates, stop feeling so guilty about being an addict, you're not a junkie and you DO NOT need to defend yourself or owe anyone an explanation for taking meds that you need to function. You are not doing anything wrong. I think some people are just miserable no matter what and want you to join in their misery. Myself, at present, I feel the way I should. GREAT! And WHO says I'm not allowed to or not suppose to like the medicine that I have to take. And I do like the way the meds make me feel and I am not ashamed to admit it, but I wonder how my liver is going to handle them over time and have cut back a little. I really don't want to be an addict, and never have, but I'll be dipped in dog-doo if I'm going to live in chronic pain 7-24-356. Feel good and enjoy it! I wrote this after reading your blog Katie ( I think u call this a blog. I'm new to this.) YOU DON'T OWE THIS james PERSON ANY EXPLANATION WHAT-SO-EVER!! What really scares me is what the D.E.A. is doing and not giving a f*** what the people who have to deal with chronic pain are going to do. Well that's another subject, all I have on that issue is I'm worried...real worried

I think your full of it. I myself was almost killed in 2002 and cant get but 60 10mg oxycodone now. I used to get 60 80mg OC the real kind and 60 perks for breakthrough but not anymore. I hurt everyday and fight everyday not to just end it all.

No doctors in Atlanta for chronic pain. Why? Because the CDC is dictating guidelines. 3 days of meds for chronic pain. People are committing suicide. But, that's what our government wants us to do. They are running out of Social Security. May as well be in Nazi Germany.

Yes I know a Dr. that only writes Roxi 30mgs, And 15mg......also he will give you 30-60---- 10 mg and/or 30-60............20 mg oxycodone. These are not Instant Release but they are the straight oxycodone and they last longer and better. If you want to know who he is, he has a place in Heflin, Al and Jacksonville, AL. I have never been there but know a few people who have.

At last someone with sense! No doctor ever held a gun on a patient and forced him/her to OD! Patients should be required to watch a documentary tutorial video which explains in detail exactly what to expect when taking prescription opioids, including side effects, tolerance vs toxicity, signs and symptoms of abuse, and how to administer emergency first aid when someone overdoses! The difference between medicine and an illicit drug is simply this: if you take the drug exactly as it was prescribed then it is medicine. If you exceed the prescribed dosage in any way, in any form, then it is no longer prescription medicine. Opiates have a high potential for abuse and anyone even the most innocent person can fall into the opiate loop! For example, a preacher in a small town suddenly has an automobile accident. The doctor prescribes opiates to that person and then 6 months later when the injury has finally healed the person is still addicted to the opiates, potentially, most likely abusing them by then! What started off as an innocent pain reliever soon became a $60 a day habit. There are literally thousands of people out there that this has happened to and they keep it in the closet because they don't want their family or their friends or congregation to find out that they are continuing to take the drug in a phenomenal amount daily. But the amazing thing is how completely ignorant most of the public is when it comes to knowledge of Oxycodone... Oxycontin, Percocet, Tylox, Oxycodone IR - they are all the same drug and this includes so-called Roxy's. Roxicodone is the BRAND NAME for Oxycodone products made by the ROXANE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY! Roxane also manufactures other C II opiates like morphine, hydromorphone (Dilaudid), Oxymorphone (Opana), and others. OxyContin is also BRAND NAME for Oxycodone which is CONTINuously released over time. CONTIN is just a time-release formula, and other opiates are time-released too, such as MS CONTIN which is Morphine Sulfate in a time-release formula. Instant Release (IR) formulas dissolve within seconds after swallowing them and deliver the entire dosage at once. CONTINs do not; they release a portion of the dosage quickly and then over time gradually release the rest in order to maintain a CONTINuous amount of the chemical in the bloodstream by a process called micro-encapsulation which encloses micrograms of the drug in a plastic matrix which melts slowly in the small GI tract allowing absorption while the plastic is passed on to the colon and expelled.

Anyone who believes that abusing an OxyContin will give all of the dosage at once is sadly mistaken! To avoid being abused, manufacturers are using formulas of plastic matrices which cannot be broken down! That's why drug abusers pay higher prices for IR's. Oxys, Roxys, Percodan, Percocet, Tylox, OxyContin, OPs and many others ALL HAVE OXYCODONE AS THE MAIN INGREDIENT! No product is Oxycodone alone! They all have fillers, binders, and other ingredients such as Tylenol, Aspirin, sugars, wax, plastic, and others. Read the current Physician's Desk Reference! Know what goes into your body and brain and what it does once it's in there! Hey, I'm a 9th grade dropout, but ask any pharmacist or Pain Management Specialist and you'll see that I am spot on. Take your meds as prescribed and never ever take a drug without looking it up first. Be careful. Be smart. Stay informed. A word of advice: avoid psych meds if possible. Treat all others as deadly poisons. Because taken without knowledge, they are exactly that! "Hey Doc! Can I get my ADDERALL now?

I am appalled that you work in the medical field and are so ANGRY and JADED. It is possible that everyone will get some degree of DDD, however, how many will get it at 30 years of age? It isn't the DDD that causes the pain,it's the nerve compression and nerve damage from the herniated disks, and the spinal canal stenosis in the lumbar region that causes the excruciating pain. I have experienced horrible pain from this for twenty years, and tried every possible treatment, including two rounds of treatment by two different pain clinics (nerve blocks, multiple rhyzotomies, etc.), chiropractic, accupuncture, even spent a week with Mayo Clinic's version of TV's Dr. House, and was told that there was no treatment that would relieve my pain. So, after over ten years of seeking other treatments, I turned to my family doctor, who was more than happy to write MS Contin and Oxycodone (for breakthrough pain). I finally got my life back! Couldn't work, but was no longer in agony and could get out of bed. Unfortunately due to new KY legislation, after over ten years of writing these meds for me, my doctor will no longer write pain meds for chronic pain patients. Because of the legislation, he can't afford the additional staff he would have to hire to comply with the new legal requirements, nor does he have the extra time to satisfy the requirement that a complete physical, treatment plan and progress notes be performed/completed each time he sees the patient (every two months). My condition will not improve - so why should he have to do these things? He shouldn't, but that is what the law in Kentucky now requires.

So, you are completely wrong when you say that anyone with a legitimate pain problem can get these meds from their local family physician. The DEA and KY AG's office have so intimidated the physicians in Kentucky, that they are terrified of treating even legirt patients. Why should they risk losing their license to practice and risk imprisonment thanks to an overzealous legislature? Many of the people you are calling "addicts" (not atticts) are not addicts at all. They are seeking legitimate treatment for their real pain, and because of the nature of the meds they have been on, they are physically dependent. There is a huge difference.

Exactly what part of the "medical field" are you in? The hospital cafeteria? Educate yourself before you speak again in such a heartless, discompassionate way to the people posting here!

Howard2723.....It could work either way.
I have been going there for 5 years and this year, after Dr Clark committed suicide in his office, they have been flipping out.
They now preach pills are bad and will keep lowering your doseage.
I'm looking for a new place.

Idk wth your problem is! Yeah, there may be a few ppl on here that are addicts seeking but fyi I broke my back years ago, was in a bad work accident that has caused me to have total hip replacement & multiple surgeries! I have taken shots, nerve blockers, therapy on several occasions & they are talking about more surgery which is not an option at this time! My doc will not give pain meds, states need the surgeries well that is absolutly impossible @ this time! I am a single mother so I cannot take time off work, I don't have anyone to take my daughter back & forth to school & things she needs to go to & personally. Tired of being cut on without any relief! So why don't you get off your soapbox & quit judging everyone! There are some individuals that do suffer from chronic pain & can't get proper treatment & would travel to the moon & back to get relief! I am glad you get your meds like you need, hope your dr never cuts you off because then maybe, just maybe you might understand where these individuals are coming from!

I'm in south central ky the doc I had for years sold his practice to the hospital (that I also worked at) and has been instructed by senior leadership not to write reoccurring narcotic scripts and if the patient needs treatment for say chronic pain refer them to the local pain clinic (that the hospital also owns) he may or may not write a script for u just long enough to get u in the pain clinic. The clinic I saw in Michigan im not sure exactly where it is a buddy and I saw it as we drove down 8 mile, we got off i-75 and drove down 8mile to get gas and that's when we noticed the security guards in vehicles patrolling a small parking lot 2 guards in one small lot, he'll that was in July of last year it may not even be there now.

When I was at my worst taking pills I was taking 5-6 80s a day and functioned with a full time job now that I'm off them I feel so much better( I must confess I sure miss the nods and occasionally I get the urge to take something ) I'm not saying i don't take anything because I do every now and then after all I've got two full blown out disc and if I over do it I'm screwed, I've taken a few oxys maybe about 30 since December I'll get 6-10 at a time and each time I take the last one I'm already wanting another that goes to show I cant have a big bottle of them to take as needed I cant control myself and I kinda have the urge for several days after i stop so really not worth it I've gotten so I only take any if I'm in really bad pain (you know like you're suppose to do lol)

It makes me sick to think back at the money I've blown on pain pills I've done a rough estimate and I'm ashamed to say I've been hooked for 20 years but only hooked on oxys and Roxys for about 10 years I averaged $295 a day estimated and at 10 yr, 10yr x 365 days= 3,650 days x $295= you get the idea it's over a million, wtf I must be nuts I've wasted so much money and that's not the worst of it 20 yr of my life gone I can never get those times back my little boy is nearly grown my wife has been thru hell and back, the one person that will stand side by side with me no matter what I have been so mean to her. My family deserves so much more from me, i hope I can give them everything they deserve, sorry I'm rambling on im just proud of myself for getting to where Im at I knew when I statred taking to many pills I denied the fact and played it off that I need them I'm in pain I got a bad back blah blah blah the fact is I was over medicating and had to take Meds to be normal. Well enough rambling I hope I help someone get to where I'm at if u want to be here.

Look for real help. These meds are not new, what's new is the availability and that is changing fast because everyday people are becoming junkies; committing crimes and becoming degenerates because of the addiction. Recovery is hard but think of all the thousands you spent on this crap. Thousands spent to sell yourself into slavery.

Just a small agreement: do not ever go into a new doctor's office and tell him what you want. My state of residence is particularly suspicious of patients who use this approach. Pharmacists are cracking down on patients who even appear to be doctor-shopping.
One more item: OxyContin is still referred to as "hillbilly heroin", due to its "easy" availability and the feelings of euphoria that accompany its ingestion. #1 is just plain false. You must prove to a physician that you experience constant, intractable pain. Doctors are not easy to convince. They are thinking far ahead into the future when they might be hit with a lawsuit by your family as a result of prescribing you a drug he found medically necessary. #2 - there is no euphoria associated with the current formulation. In fact, there should be no "high" if you are in real pain and need real relief. OxyContin does its job, which is to kill pain, and nothing more.

I truly feel your anger and frustration but what our medical providers were forced to undertake in the name of unconscionable big pharma recreational users and pill runners dating back to the late 1990s is reprehensible at best.Suffiice it to say there is plenty of blame to go around.
Opiates once lauded as GODS MEDICINE, For morphines ability to allow battlefield surgeons to quickly resolve many before its use fatal injuries. So there is no doubt the effectiveness of this class drug for over 100 years.Like with alcohol tobacco and other key vices in our past controversy soon followed because of the very high potential for abuse.Fast forward to the present day and these tiny little miracle pills that assist so many with legit quality of life altering conditions can no longer access this medication.Answers are difficult but one thing I know for sure as a former organizer for change VERY FEW WITH OPINIONS EVER SHOW THERE SUPPORT AT KEY TIMES IN THIS BATTLE.I suppose it's that "other guy will help because I'm not able" mindset that has precluded any true action from taking place. How many will travel hundreds of miles to fill there script but when it comes to taking action that requires an hour or two of there time everyone is otherwise predisposed. When the simple act of signing an online petition can garner less then 350 signatures as opposed to tens of thousands of searches trying to get there meds quicker and easier makes all parties discouragedthat so few care enough to affect any real change in dealing with this crisis.
"Give it a name", blame whomever you believe is responsible but at least care enough to fight for a change so the next time your script needs to be refilled you won't have to worry what pharmacy in what county will stock the meds We need to survive and actually fill it without going thru hell.
My opinion is meaningless as long as we could make life easier for those truly in need ( which Iam one ) and despise the over reaching entity known as the DEA. BUT LIKE I STARTED THIS POST. THERE IS PLENTY OF BLAME TO GO AROUND.Perhaps one day soon we can all come together long enough to affect a change so our next generation isn't cursed with this same problem. God bless all of us who suffer needlessly....,

First of all don't say that out loud to all of us that can't get into see a dr or even find one that isn't scared to take care of human beings that are in chronic pain, people like me and thousands of others pay about a dollar a milligram for those that you don't know what to do with.Isnt it ironic that our Government that makes our laws is the very same that turns us law abiding citizens into pain sufferers that are forced to find our pain relief on the street...this is not right, if there loved ones were in horrible pain in front of there eyes the laws might be a little different, I really don't think they know that because of them they keep drug dealers and the drug trade booming, and until they reslize this and make sweeping changes to how people that need it can get it legally ,cheaper, and without making us feel like drug addicts the illegal drug trade will continue to boom.
