Please advise how to lose 40 lbs , a rather sudden gain at age 78-79. at same time I was diagnosed as typ 2 diabetes, lumbar stenosis, colitis with gastritis and esophagitis, ideopathic pulmonary fibrosis, plus existing fibromyalgia, arthritis, osteoporosis. this wgt at age 81 on 5ft 2 shrinking frame, causes me. Much pain, discomfort, difficulty moving and handling chores and personal care. doctors have prescribed several meds....metoprolol, lorazepam, hhdroxyzine zinc, cymbalta, mirapex for RLS, 1/2 hyromorphon for pain as well as tramadol, Aleve,Lialda, and a thyroid scan is due . Please help! No one, even father and three brothers ever weighed the 170+ now!! shortness of breath and extra fatigue and rest caused by IPF adds to difficulties and prevents even minimal exercise. Seems my whole body, person, appetite, and profound tiredness/sleepiness are unrecognizable as mine!!
Friends and neighbors are urging me to consult other doctors who might provide better control and direction, I am floundering, literally, and very discouraged, and have xlosets full of clothing too small now, while some items I jad been able to wear during a 30+ year period because my size remained quite stable. I am now afraid.

Be careful and highly observant if you stop taking Mirapex. Going off it can result in dopamine agonist withdrawal syndrome, which is devastating and unrelenting. There's no offical treatment, unless going back on Mirapex were to helpIt's not universal, so you do not have to expect it. Buit if you notice debilitating depression after you stop taking it, it could be DAWS.

Cymbalta has its own withdrawal syndrome. Electric shock sensation, among other things.

Stopping some drugs might be necessary. If you feel horrible after stopping either of the ones I mentioned, there is a good chance it is withdrawal problems, not a new case of horrible depression.

Hello, Beren! How are you doing? I'm sorry about the problems that you're having.

Of the medications you've listed, those known by the FDA to possibly cause weight gain as a side effect would be the Metoprolol, Mirapex and Cymbalta, so you are on several that could contribute. Other side effects may also include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, frequent urination, headache and constipation.

Unfortunately, it usually doesn't change, as long as you're still taking them. However, you might be able to try alternative medications, if you speak to your doctor about the problem to see if they cause the same issue. There are other choices available.

And yes, it wouldn't hurt to get another opinion regarding your health and medications, as a matter of fact, it's good for people to do, for their own safety.

How much do you eat and what types of foods?
