Is It Ok To Take Vicodin With Suboxone? (Top voted first)

Updated

Hi. I am having a procedure done and am being prescribed vicodin. I am currently on suboxone. I WILL NOT take the vicodin unless I am in excruciating pain. Would suboxone help with the pain? And if I do have to take the vicodin how long should I wait to take it after taking suboxone? THANKS!

I have taken 4-6 mg of subs for 3 days but realize my other pain treatment for my back disease is not yet built up and so I need get back on the norco for awhile...Will I need to wait more than 24 hrs to feel the effects since I haven't been on the subs for that long?

this is not really true...you might feel some effect of the oxy but not like you would if you were not on suboxone. oxy is a strong opiate. If you were taking vicodin or percocet you would need to take so many you might od on tylenol before you overcome the buprenorphine and feel the effects of the other drug. Everyone is different though so for some it might be 24 hrs and others it takes up to a week to feel the effects of other opiates after taking suboxone regularly. I am not a doctor, just someone whos been on subs for a while to stay off vicodin. I have experimented with both vic and percs while on subs and i can say that for me its a waste of pills.. I have waited as long as 3 days after stopping subs then took norco ( it was a substantial amout of pills at one time) and all it did was keep me from withdrawing off the suboxone but i still felt nothing and all the tylenol made me sick.... bottom line is...talk to your addiction dr. he/she will tell you how to wean off the subs so you can take pain meds for surgery. Don't try to figure it out yourself. YOU CAN OD ON PILLS EVEN IF YOU DON'T GET HIGH FROM THEM. Is it worth it??

I should add that i was recreationally taking suboxone (the worst idea in the world btw). Just wanted to post some REAL INFORMATION NOT MEANT TO SCARE, INTIMIDATE OR LIE TO PEOPLE WHO ARE DESPERATELY LOOKING FOR ANSWERS.... case in point, this didnt happen the last time i tried, but today it did.

I took suboxone for years its a money scam they don't tell u that ur 1,,mil of sub equals 1000 mil of morphine so u build tolerance without getting hi. So u wont feel opiates long after you stop subs I've been off subs for 6months I still can't feel opiates plus sub withdrawal is way worse than opiate

I tapered off of Suboxone and was done for 6 days (no subs what so ever). However, to ease the wd's i took Kratom and Tramadol. On day 8 I took a 4mg suboxone, day 9 i took 4mg suboxone and then didnt take any on day 10. Half way through day 10 took 10 mgs of oxycontin and felt it.

I wonder hat happend to you since I m replying late... Didn't you tell your doctor, the one doing the procedue, what meds you are on, were on, and will be on? This is a no-brainer and I don't understand why a Doc would write you a script for Vics knowing you are on a Sub program. The Subs will cancel out other opiates in your system so you will feel nothing. Its better to let your Doc know exactly what you are up to, you never knowhow the mixing of meds will have on your system. Good luck!

I have been off pain pills for months and currently relapsed. TODAY at 10am I took about 3mg of a suboxone strip. It is now 7:30pm and I just had a 30mg roxi(Percocet). I don't feel the full effect from it but I AM DEFINITELY HIGH from the roxi. So it all depends on the individual and the time spent on sub treatment. So there's my experience.

Im new to discussion on my opiate problem. I have been on both sides of the track with Suboxone and PK's For over 5 years now. I will say the withdrawals of SSuboxone are a lot worse than PK's. Has anyone heard of some surgery they have out that will restart and repair your brain receptors?

Here is the deal..no reason to waste pain killers if u took a sub that day! Wait atleast 24 hrs cause they have no affect if u don't! If u are on subs for a month, it will be several days before u feel any different. If u are taking subs to get off of pain pills u only need 3 8mg strips to
get u through pain pill withdrawals. Take 4mg and several hrs later if u start craving pills take 4 more mg's. The sub will be in your system for a couple days so you wont have the sweats and legs cramping problem. If u have to take subs longer then a week to withdrawal off of pain pills then u need to go to a class!! Opiate withdrawals last 6 days max!! After that, it is mental...period!!!

Hi I've been on suboxone for 5 yrs. I want to get off of em soooo bad. I'm tired of having to take the sub films to feel "normal". I take 16 mg a day. I've tried weaning myself off but that didn't work obviously. If anyone out there can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Any advice would be better than none. Thanks again in advance. Have a great day:)

Suboxone does not help relieve any pain what so ever. I am on suboxone, but if you have to take vicodin you can't take it unless you haven't been on suboxone for 24 hrs. The misconseption that you can't take pain pills with suboxone because it blocks them is partially true. If you take suboxone in the morning and and OC at night you still get the effect from the opiate.

I have been addicted to vicodin for 4 years. I had 2 8 mg sub strips and took them over a 5 day period and i had no withdrawel symptoms at all. I believe suboxone is a life saver but dont understand why people are on it for years.

Been on subs 2 yrs. taking 1/2 strip (4/1) as the ratio would follow and 2 weeks ago cut my dose. I have the best addic doc in the state and I took upon myself to cut from 1/2 to 1/3 a strip. Percentage wise that is about 30% drop in med. felt very few if any side affects, things have been normal. Doc said that any noticeable effects would occur 24-48 hrs after cut in dose. Long past that point and feeling fine... Frankly, much of it is mental and my advice, those first 48 hrs, keep occupied, you won't even notice it. Funny how the brain works, when you tell yourself you want the sub you will, believe me been there. Once you reach the point where mentally you want to cut your dose and don't want to turn back, you'll get there. I cold turkeyed 150mg oc a day and haven't turned back in 2 yrs. did the first 2 month no sub, it was perseverance. Get to that same point with the sub where you don't think or worry about the dose cut and you'll be 100% good to go. Trust me. Been as low as possible and you have to tell yourself and believe the bs your telling yourself is just that, bulls***, in order to achieve the mental state of being to get off. I will be cutting my dose again in 1 month and have told myself I won't take another sub after may 1 14'. Set dates and goals and stick to em no Mather what, that's what mentally motivating yourself will do. Don't falter from it either. Your mind can overpower itself, don't let it. Wake up one day and say I'm doing it and don't second guess yourself a bit, second guessing is a way out. Don't give yourself a way out and you will prosper. Wish you the best of luck, hope this helps even in the slightest.

Hi terrified blonde,
Usually a sub dr. will have you taper to .5mg or even .25mg then have you stop taking it. They may even prescribe something to help you sleep and something to calm you down but only for a few days. I,m talking maybe 3 sleeping pills and 3 of some other stuff for calming effect.
However, what your dr. is prescribing is not unheard of.
It will keep away the sub wds.
This is obviously a risky way for people with addiction issues to get off subs.
Your gonna have to follow the drs. orders to the letter even if you start to feel a little crappy when your tapering the tabs and the morphine.
I,d be surprised if you felt anything off the tab/morph. after being on such a high dose of subs for so long. What I mean by that is you probably won,t feel the buzz you used to feel when on pain pills but they will help to keep the sub wd away.
Good Luck.

Hi Jennifer, I'm surprised to hear that your Dr wants you to take Subs AND pain pills at the same time...are you sure you understood your Dr correctly? I was on 8-12 mg of Subutex daily for 3 years and I'm getting ready to have back surgery and my Dr had me stop my Subutex cold turkey, wait 24-48 hours until I started to feel mild withdrawals and then start taking my first dose of Norco (10/325) and Morphine ER (30mg). My Dr is wonderful and he has gotten many patients off of Subs using this technique. I was terrified to try it because I was so scared of withdrawals from the Subs, but IT WORKED! I also take Xanax so he keeps me on it. The whole reason to get off the Subs now is because after being on Subs for any length of time, it takes a while for the Opiates (Norco,Vicoden, etc) to work...Trust me, I was the biggest CHICKEN about getting off the Subutex for fear of Wd's, but as soon as you take your first pain pill, you won't suffer any withdrawals. You won't feel "high", you'll feel normal:-) The reason I'm confused about your Dr keeping you on Subs AND Pain pills is because once you take your first Vicoden (or any opiate), you CAN'T take Subs again until you are in MODERATE WITHDRAWLS FROM THE VICODEN, YOU WILL DEFINITELY HAVE PRECIPITATED WITHDRAWALS...Please research this. You can' mix these medications. Yes, you can easily switch FROM Subs TO Pain pills, but please listen...you CAN'T MIX OR switch between the two meds. You have to be OFF of ALL NARCOTIC PAIN MEDICATION for at least 24 hours (or until you start feeling withdrawls from your pain pills) BEFORE you can take even the smallest dose of Subs again. You will be sicker than you've ever been. Sorry this post is so long, I just really don't want you to get "hell on earth sick". If you take your pain meds and then take a Sub that same day, you will go into severe withdrawls immediately...the Suboxone/Subutex is crazy, scarey strong...it will knock the Opiates (Vicoden, etc) off your brain receptors and you will be extremely sick. However, as long as you take ONLY your new pain medication before and after your surgery, you will be fine. I've just been through this and it works great. Be honest with yourself after your surgery...when you're healed and you don't need your pain pills anymore, get rid of them. After my surgery, I tr tapered off my Norco and Morphine ER, and GREAT NEWS...I have no cravings and I decided to NOT GO BACK ON SUBS! I feel so clean, full of energy, I sleep great and the great thing is, if you stay on your pain meds for a few weeks, you WON'T EVER SUFFER ANY WITHDRAWLS FROM THE SUBS! As long as you have the willpower and FAITH in GOD and in Yourself, you can and WILL get off the Suboxone by safely using your pain meds for a week or two. Anyone who says different hasn't been through this. I just accomplished this, I Stopped my Subutex on 3/2/14, Started Norco and Morphine er on 3/4/14, and I Stopped ALL NARCOTIC PAIN MEDS a few days ago. If you need to go back on the Subs AFTER you heal and get off the pain meds, please take the lowest dose of Subs possible. If you don't want to be TRAPPED IN SUBOXONE HELL FOREVER, them take your pain meds as prescribed and taper off of them when you're healed from your surgery. I'm speaking from first hand experience, this plan WORKS and you'll be so happy to not be a prisoner to this sick suboxone/subutex world. I'm now taking non narcotic pain meds and I just had an Epidural this week. Don't let your mind trick you into thinking that you need to go back on Subs. This surgery is your way out, and if anyone tells you differently, they haven't experienced it first hand! Also, remember...PLEASE DON'T MIX SUBS AND NARCOTIC PAIN MEDS. When is your surgery? Please reply to this post, I'll be waiting to hear from you. Hang in there!

I had 2 major surgeries for cancer and I had been (still on) suboxone, at the time was 2 years on. My Sub Dr was great, called.the oncologist and surgeons, the end result was in order to get pain meds after surgery that I would need, I had to stop subs a week before. They said ideally 8-10 days but that wasn't an option at the time. I felt like hell for the first 4 days or so but when surgery time came I was ok, not good not great but you get the idea. Anyways the first surgery which was the worst, they sided cautiously and only gave me 10 mg Oxy, and 40 count. I was calling them every 4-5 days because of how horrible the pain was. Never realized that suboxone had long affect after stopping. But 2nd time around I told them I wanted them to keep me after for 24 hrs due to the amount of pain I had before and number of times I had to call sometimes crying because the pain would just not stop. My advice for you, is if you can make it a week off suboxone and take whatever painkillers and leave it at that without going back to being addicted then do it!! You will not regret the chance you have to take pain meds (not suboxone) while wd off of subs, as many stated above all they will do cuz of the strength is make you feel normal. That's really all you should want, I wished I had stayed off and not gone back to suboxone. It's been 7 yrs and I litteraly take a paper sized piece off a strip a day. The 8 mg strip lasts about 14-16 days. Yet if I don't take it I feel like I did when I started and missed a full 12 mg dose. To all who are on or want to get on subs, get on get clean, take the LOWEST dose you can deal with and get the hell off it. Get clean and live your life without stupid wds. Well good luck hope I helped someone and that this wasn't too long

I have been on subs for about a year and from my experience you will not feel any "effects" from the vicodin for several days althought you might get some pain relief from it. Im not sure why or how, thats just how it worked for me.
