I took Omnicef 300 mg 2x a day..I took them for 11 days..was suppose to take for 3 weeks..At the palms of my hands started itching..and were very red..than my left foot started itching..I stoped taking the medicine 1 day ago...this happened on the weekend...of course...I am taking bendryl...about every four hours..Now my left calf has hives..both wrists..have hives..my bikini area..is covered with hives..and of all things..my right ear..is flame red and itches...also my right knee...I called my doctor today...she said stop the medicine..I said I did...she said take bendryl 50 mg 3 times a day..which I am..and I think more..This is so weird..that it has hit such different parts of my body..ohhh. I forgot...how could I forget...tonight..my butt started to itch...and its just covered in hives...Has anyone else had this problem with Omnicef...I think I would rather have the bladder infection than go thru this

I was prescribed a Z-pack and Cefdinir to treat a severe sinus infection two weeks ago. I finished the Z-pack, no problem, and continued to take the Cedfinir two times a day. On the last day of Cefdinir I started itching on my belly button, ankles, elbows, hands and fingers, and behind both ears, while at work. I went to my doctor and she told me to discontinue use and added it to the list of medications I'm allergic to (this is the first time I've had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic).

I've taken Cefdinir before and did not have this reaction. This time though. Oof. Bad diarrhea, a yeast infection (even after taking 2 doses of diflucan and drinking kefir), and then uncontrollable itching all over my body. My hands are red and swollen on both sides, my fingers itch, my palms ache, and my joints hurt—I feel like I have arthritis all the sudden. I am not one to complain about pain, but my hands (especially) are throbbing and it hurts to make my hands flat.

My doctor did not want to give me Prednisone, as I have a sensitive stomach and the Cefdinir had already done a number on it. So she prescribed a steroid cream, Triamcinolone Acetonide cream, increased my dosage of Allegra to two 180 mg tabs a day, and said to take 150 mg of Zantac once or twice a day. Zantac is an antacid but it's also an antihistamine. She said that this "cocktail" should have the same effects of Benadryl but without the drowsiness.

I'm still itching...and miserable.

I have been taking Cefdinir for bladder infections, now all of a sudden my palms itch and so does my buttocks. The itching drives me crazy! I had been taking this drug for over 2 years for my bladder infections, no more!

I also started breaking out into hives 2 days after finishing 10 days. It lasted for 2 weeks. Started on my torso and thighs and gradually spread out my extremities. Didn't get on my face until the very end. Prednisone with multiple antihistamines did barely touched the itching. I was taking 2 allegra in the morning, 4 zyrtec at night, 4 zantac during the day and supplementing every couple of hours with antarax just to survive. Very awful situation. Included an ER visit because my blood pressure dropped to 70/54. Scary. Never again will I take the drug. One allergist I saw said it was probably not the drug but I don't believe him.

Cefdnir should never be prescribed to someone with an amoxicillin allergy. My 17 year old son took cefdnir for 10 days for a salivary gland infection. Then he started having severe diarrhea. In the next few days he started breaking out in hives. His hands were in pain from the hives. I took him to the doctor and they didn't make the connection to the cefdnir since it had been several days since he finished it. He was told to take benadryl and zyrtec. The next day his face was swollen, he started coughing and he had a fever. We ended up in the ER and they gave him steroids and epinephrine. Then he had a 5 day prescription of prednisone. Hopefully he will be better now.

Twenty days later and the spots are still visible, though they're much improved (I have very pale skin and it takes a long time for marks of any kind to fade on me). They're now down to a purpleish-brown, though I think in a few places they may be leaving scars behind when they finally go. The itching is better, though my skin is also extremely dry now (using Aquaphor to see if that will help). While they were at the height of itching, a friend suggested baking soda baths which helped sooo much. I also just wet down baking soda like a paste and applied to the itchy areas. It soothes while it is on (though if you've been scratching ti will burn) though as soon as it is washed off the effect ends, but it does give a break in the meantime. The rash is fading in the same way it came in - i.e. my left forearm arm is getting better first. It's barely visible there except as scaly patches now.

I took Cefdinir for 7 days and noticed extreme itching. Luckily I realized it was similar to my reacation to Cephalexin (yes, being allergic to cephalexin, this doctor still gave me cefdinir). I broke out in hives that night and discontinued use. The doctor will not give me steroids etc and only said to take benadryl. At 10 days from stopping the medication, the hives are not really any better. It will fade then come back again. (I did have fever and fatigue which have improved some) but the itching is driving me crazy and the rash is everywhere (even my lips are broken out and have a red ring around them), and all my lymph nodes are still swollen (what the pills were originally prescribed for). I can't see that the benadryl helps me at all except to make me tired. I am considering seeing a new doctor, though as we live in a very rural location it means an entire new clinic in a different town.

Our son was taking this Omnicef medicine for 11 days and I got a call from his school that he broke out in hives and a bad rash on his torso and arms and buttocks area. I will be calling the Doctor to see about changing the medicine. It was to clear up a double ear infection and on Friday we had the follow up and his ears were not cleared up yet so she recommended more of this medicine. Not now. This is crazy! This medicine Omnicef does not clear up anything, and only makes things worse.

I took omicef 4/26/17 at 1:30pm went to sleep woke up at 5:30pm and started itching all over, I tried home remedies they didn't work so I showered and afterwards noticed that my entire body especially my back and chest were covered in red rash. I used calamine lotion and aloe Vera and am staying cool. It seems to be helping. Hope this helps.

Hi I too started this med and have small bumps all over my body. Itcy as heck. They started in private areas and moved all over. Figured it was side effect of the antibiotics and would go away but 14 days later not so much. Call doc and he said to stop. I was on them for a sinus infection. What an awful product as so many people are having such reactions . Seriously !!

I had a hive issue last year , not from the medication but I was diagnosed with idiopathic hives which means unknown . My allergist got me on Xokair injections once a month for a year and no more hives..it prevented the hives from coming out and now I'm off the Xokair and no hives .
Funny thing I was prescribed Cefdiner for sinus infection, I stopped taking it after 8 days, two days after I stopped I got a rash , now I'm taking benedryl .. If it gets worse or persists I will go for the injection again .. I will not take this antibiotic again

took cefdinir for about nine days x2 feet & legs swelled & broke out in hives feet started to peel 3 weeks later this was in Dec.now it's Mar & still itching & peeling & now my hair is falling out by handfuls when will this allergic reaction end?

Reading everyone's post is a relief and disturbing at the same time. My daughter who is 5 was prescribed Omnicef (Cefdinir) for an ear infection. She finished her 10 days she was prescribed and the night of her last dose started complaining of her stomach itching. When I looked she had bumps, that looked like mosquitoe bites all over her torso area. It didn't start out looking like hives. But they itched horribly to where she miserable. After a bath, a dose of Benadryl and some cortisone cream she was comfortable. The next morning it looked different, more like hives. I called and made an appointment with her pediatrician and within an hour her whole body was covered in hives. It looked scary. It was mostly on her stomach, arms, neck, face, scalp and feet. Then she started complaining saying she couldn't breathe and she was panting. I immediately took her to the ER where they confirmed it was probably a reaction to the antibiotic. She has taken this before, numerous times. Plus, I didn't know that you could develop this reaction after taking it for 10 days. I fully convinced it was the medication but after seeing how everyone else developed their reaction after 10 days or so, I definitely know now it was the medicine. They gave her a steriod at the ER and and rx for the next 5 days. By the afternoon the rash didn't look so angry. But early evening it started to flare up again. The worst was on her feet. The were so swollen it hurt her to walk. Not only is she irritable from the steriod she is so uncomfortable from the hives. I am going to add Zyrtec tomorrow and an oatmeal bath to see if that will give her more comfort. Thanks for all your stories. It has been more then helpful and has definitely clarified some questions I've had. It's heartbreaking to see your child like this and there isn't anything you can do. Wish us luck!!

I agree...I use the Benadryl spray and it seems to calm it down for a little while. Then it pops up in another spot and it's even worse. Coconut oil seems to work but only temporarily. Thanks for sharing!

Hi. I am so thankful for everyone who has posted about Cefdinir and the complications. My son is 9 years old and was prescribed this for a possible sinus infection. After 3 doses he got severe hives all over his body. He has no history of allergies to anything. I stopped medication immediately. Luckily I was able to control the allergic reaction with Benadryl every 4-6 hours and some anti itch cream. The first day he had them all day and then each day following they would turn up in the early evening, but in different spots. Sometime just on torso, next night all over face, hands and feet, then the next morning he would wake up and they would be gone. Completely but would return in the evening. So crazy and scary. After 4 different doctor visits we found out he has pneumonia and was treated with zpak and prednisone which helped with the hives as well. The last doctor did admit that allergic reaction was most likely caused by Cefdinir. Other doctors would not confirm. Anyway, just wanted to post our experience. He is on his second day of prednisone and we did not have hives last night. He does still have some occasional itching still throughout the day, but really minor, a few little bumps that look like a bug bites. Good luck everyone!

I am going through exactly the same thing!!! Hives and rashes that move around???!!!! At least it's gone from around my eyes and I look normal, if you don't look at my back today. Sometimes my palms swell with hives, sometimes my ears and neck. So uncomfortable!!! This is day 3. From previous posts, it doesn't look like it's going away soon. This was my third time on this antibiotic, and no reaction appeared until I finished the last dose. Horrible drug!!!!!!!

I just ended my full round of the antibiotic & my hands and feet started to itch!!! It seems to be spreading, but those are the worst 2 places. I am freaking out! It is scary & super annoying! The pharmacist warned me that I could have a reaction since I am allergic to penecillin. Why did my doctor prescribe me this?!?!

I just woke up itchy so I scratched and scratched until my hole body was covered .. It was really weird never happened to me before started fro my neck and worked its way to my feet aloe veara gel helped so much .. I was going nuts ! I woke up today hive free and scared to scratch anywhere anywho I feel real bad for u ppl that get it all the time if my brother eats peanuts he turns into the elephant man

I just recently was also diagnosed with a UTI and my dr. Gave me a 10 day perscription on Nitrofurion. On the 9th day I starting breaking out in hives on my hands and wrists. By morning I had them coving my body and ended up with a cortisone shot and 3 visits to the ER.. It's been over a MONTH and the hives still appear now and then..
Come to find out the 10 day dose is known to possibly cause hives due to allergic reaction
It has been HORRIBLE.. I would have preferred natural remedys like Uva Ursi tea to fix the UTI rather than that medication.

I was itching everywhere and couldnt even stand. It was horrible, I eventually went to the hospital. Apparently I had a allergic reaction to it, the hospital messed up a ivy so I got transferred to a children's hospital. That was a horrible childhood experience.
