Extreme Salty Taste In Mouth For 20 Days! (Top voted first)

Updated

I'm a 51 yr. old female who woke up on April 7, 2011, with an extremely salty taste in my mouth. When I tried to drink water to wash it out, it was like drinking salt gargle water. Nothing I eat or drink makes it go away. I can't stand to put anything in my mouth that is salty because the salt taste already in my mouth makes it almost unswallowable. Prior to that day, I have only 2 regular medications that I take daily: Lisinopril 40 mg( increased from 20 mg in mid November) for high BPas well as HCTZ 25 mg(been taking Lisinopril for 8 years) and 1mg of ropinorole(generic for Requip) for RLS (taking for almost 6 years). I also take black cohosh twice a day for hot flashes and night sweats(last menstrual cycle was Sept. 2010). On March 18, I started taking a 10 day prescription for NOHIST for a sinus inflammation, as well as FLONASE and a cough medicine. I had taken both the Flonase and cough medicine years previously, but had never had the NOHIST before. I finished the NOHIST and had no other symptoms. I had also been following a nutrition plan since mid- February losing 2-3 lbs. per week, eating lots of protein, and walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week on a treadmill at the gym. I was feeling good and my energy levels were good. I had been drinking 5-6 glasses of water daily and then after the salty taste, I could hardly drink one glass. I ended up with a UTI because of the lack of fluids that I wasn't able to drink, and then had to take Cipro for 3 days and drink (salty) cranberry juice. Yuck! I also had lab work done and it showed a positive on the A & A and also a positive on the IGG. With those results, I was referred to a rheumatologist (which could take months to get in to see) and my primary care doctor changed by BP med to Triamatrene 75 mg and HTCZ 50 mg. Its been 5 days on the new BP med with no change yet. My willpower to make myself drink and eat is slowly eroding. I know that if I don't keep drinking that I could end up seriously dehydrated and in the hospital, with who knows what other problems. My doctor doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks and I still don't know when I will get an appt. with the rheumatologist!!! I have searched everything I can think of on the internet, without any hope of what it could be. I am a teacher and mother of three daughters who need me to stay out of the hospital! I hope that you can come up with a possible cause or direction that will find answers and soon! So I challenge you to find an answer, and in the meantime, drink a glass of water with about 5 TBS. of salt in it and drink it, at least 3 times a day and also swish it around in your mouth continuously and then swallow it!!!! The only time you won't taste it is when you go to sleep. And its the first thing that you consciously are aware of the instant that you wake up! Then think about having to do this for at least the next 20 days and then maybe you will have an idea of how I am feeling!!!!! Desperate!!!!!!!!!

I too have a salty taste in my mouth. Read all of Kay's trials. Without a cause I am at a loss. Been around for 77 years and I'm a thinking that we have been issued
a commercial of 'Herbalife shakes'.

salt taste in the mouth is not psychological or sexual. omg. i know it's routine to use "psychological" as a default for a doctor's failure to find a real cause of a problem (treat the symptom, not the cause) but it's rather unintelligent to expect somebody to believe that BS. salt taste is psychological, and sexual?

I've had this issue too. I believe it was from too much potassium. See if anything you are eating/taking has potassium in it.

Taste of salt in my mouth for last 5 months. Nice to know I am not the only one who is plagued with this awful problem. Doesn't look like any concrete answers though.

Are you still having this problem?

You should also be aware that you're more than likely not going to get a definitive answer from just the information you've provided in a post on the internet. To get a proper diagnosis and solution, you need an exam and possibly some medical tests.

There are several things that can cause people to experience a severe salty taste in their mouth.

Dehydration can do it, if you are already dehydrated and the reluctance to drink fluids, because of the taste in your mouth, just makes it worse.

A disease of infection of the salivary glands can also cause it, as well as nutritional deficiencies and sinus infections.

Thus, there are many possibilities and only your doctor will be able to help you determine which one is causing it and what can be done to treat it.

I think I figured out my problem with the salty (metallic) taste in my mouth. I take warfarin for hypertension and have had no problems for years. I started taking generic omeprazole and the symptom appeared immediately. I previously had the same metallic taste in my mouth when taking a course of omeprazole but didn't make the connection.

I had sinus surgery and before was on a penicillin medication and also a month afterwards. The salty taste is terrible, no matter what I eat. I do take a lot of potassium pills for leg cramps so I am going to discontinue that but I have taken potassium for years. Maybe it will go away.

I've been following this thread for some time looking for an answer. I've had the same salty taste for 8 plus months, just before having my gallbladder removed. I thought it would go away after surgery. It didn't. My GI 's answer was to put me on sucralfate, "guessing" it's bile reflux. No change. Then, through my OWN RESEARCH, I came to know that this is the most common affliction from a vitamin deficiency-calcium, vitamin D, zinc, potassium. All of which my body stopped absorbing well at 40 years old ( and an acidic diet) even MORE SO after gallbladder removal! Think a GI specialist would want to share this info? Four days into adding Caltrate, zinc, eating bananas regularly, cutting out coffee, drinking chamomile tea( find more alkaline foods) the taste is gone!
Let's face it. We tend to eat way too much protein, sugar, bread and fat. We are a fat nation that doesn't want the responsibility for that fat. A salty, sour mouth can be a sign of an acidic body. I wasn't fat, but I was 10 lbs.over weight- not anymore! You are in charge of your health. Vitamins! Proper foods, not crap! Dried fruits, like dates and figs. Almonds, in moderation if you don't have a gallbladder. I solved my problem!!!!

Just wanted to give an update on my salty taste problem from April 7th. Well I went back to see my primary care doctor on June 8 and I am happy to report that my salty taste is gone. I started noticing a decrease in the severity of the salty taste about 2 weeks ago and it has steadily decreased daily. I am so happy to finally be able to drink water and it taste just like water!!!! My doctor was happy also that my blood pressure has stabilized much lower than it was even when I was on the lisinopril. I have also lost about 25 lbs. since February with about 10 more to go to achieve my goal weight. My doctor wants to see me again in 3 months and if all is still good with my BP, then I may be taken off of it entirely. Throughout this whole ordeal, I really relied on drinking my 2 Herbalife nutritionally healthy meal replacement shakes to keep me out of the hospital!!! I have felt good (other than the stress of the salt taste) and kept my energy level high! If it hadn't been for those products, I really think that I would have ended up in the hospital! Herbalife does not ever claim to heal people from their health issues, only that it provides the body with the nutrition it needs so that the body can take care of itself! I am so happy that through this horrible salty ordeal, that I have found a way of life and products that will keep me healthy for a lifetime!!

Have you tried going to an ENT specialist? Someone really good. I went through so much after a sinus surgery. No one knew what was causing it, even the Doctor who did the surgery. He checked again and I had a major infection in the sinuses. I was spectacle about this finding. He had me do sinus irrigations daily with an antibiotic and take oral antibiotic as well. Finally after months of grueling salt taste it left. I went to a specialist at UCLA in Los Angeles and I live in Las Vegas. Other Doctors did not have a clue. I have read where the salty taste originates in the sinuses. Hope this helps.

Yes, it is day 32 of the constant salty taste I have in my mouth. I am scheduled to go back to my primary care doctor in about 4 wks to then see if after changing my blood pressure medicine, repeat the previous blood tests. I am also on the call list for a cancellation appt. for the rheumatologist since the first new patient isn't until Sept. I also have an ENT appt. next week. So I guess I'll probably have some more tests! I don't know how but I am making myself drink water ( salty as it tastes) and trying to eat things w/o salt on them . It's getting harder and harder! People don't think I look sick, and I don't complain much, so they forget! Emotionally, my strong wall of willpower has loose bricks each day that shake up my whole world! I try not to focus on the possible terrible things that might be causing it and keep telling myself that it's probably something simple to fix! And everyday I pray that God will make it go away! Will give an update when something changes! I believe in the power of prayer, so please pray that I know soon what is causing this and that it can be cured!

My husband is also taking Lisinopril for blood pressure. He also has a very salty taste in mouth... upon researching you are not to take potassium supplements or a sodium free salt which has potassium in it also.. he stopped taking his multi vitamins with potassium for only 2 days and the salty taste is starting to go away. We are in hopes that this will end the problem

I read your details with interest as I to am experiencing a salty mouth. This started 2 months ago and it is a horrible experience. I first went for a check up with my dentist but he could not come up with an answer and suggested I visit my G.P. if it continued. What I am also experiencing since this started to happen is I feel very light headed again this is an awful experience as I have always felt so well. I spoke with my G.P. who sent me off to have various blood tests, all came back o.k. I am now on a sinus spray but this has not help at all. I to have searched the internet but have not come up with any answers. Once I have finished my course of sinus spray I will be going back to my G.P. to ask her to arrange for me to see a specialist. I really do feel for you as I know exactly how you feel. The only way I can try and stop the taste of salt is eating mints or chewing gum which I never ever have done. If I can find an answer I will let you know.

The salty taste I was having was so extreme. Nothing tasted good to me. I read all the posts, hoping to find something natural to take for the nausea and salty taste. I had sinus surgery April 11, 2012 and about a month afterwards the salty taste started. I go to UCLA for medical care and called the surgeon and he said it could be a CSF leak (spinal leak) or an infection. I was returning in a couple of weeks and waited until to see the surgeon. Well, I had a severe infection. I started on heavy duty antibiotics and sinus rinses with antibiotics and salt. I can finally say the extreme salty taste is gone, just a trace of it lingers. I think what might be the cause of the salty taste has to be in the sinuses. I hope this information is helpful. I now can eat and taste the food. So relieved.

Have had extreme salty taste for almost four years. Can no longer remember what real food tastes like. I was diagnosed with Sjogrens an autoimmune disease that attacks the saliva glands. Had biopies done on inner lower lip and results they are just lymphocytes. The answer I was given the extreme driness of my mouth make my brain interpret the driness as salt. No cure no relief. Usually takes 4-5 yrs for doctors to realize a patient has Sjogren. Went to National Conf. in San Diego Calf. this spring about 500 people there. It really alters the quality of life.

'Kay' is pretty obviously a fake, and is simply writing a long drawn out out ad for Herbalife. Notice this person never explained what caused the condition of salty mouth, nor would 'she' be interested in knowing.

This information is care of the Mayo Clinic.... (Don't change any medications or your diet without speaking to your Primary Physician, Dentist or other doctor first)
POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR SALTY TASTE IN MOUTH:
Dehydration - This may be due to inadequate fluid intake or excessive fluid loss. Review your diet. Excessive intake of alcohol or caffeine can cause fluid loss, resulting in dehydration, which can make saliva saltier.
Side effect of certain medications, such as anti-thyroid medications and chemotherapy drugs.
Salivary gland diseases - such as Sjogren's syndrome or bacterial infection of the salivary glands (sialadenitis).
Post-nasal drainage - such as with a sinus infection (sinusitis) or allergies.
RARELY, a salty taste in the mouth is due to a nutritional deficiency, endocrine disorder or neurological disorder, such as epilepsy or migraine

I have a condition called" burning tongue syndrome " which cause sore tongue, swelling, and weird tastes. A swish and spit steroid helps when it gets bad but there is no cure.
