It has now been 2 months since my husband started on cymbalta for chronic headaches with no relief noted as of yet. Does anyone know how long it takes to get into your system? if anyone else suffers from this probleme let me know!

Stephen, there still would have been no way to know it would have caused that to happen to you, no matter how much you read up on the drug, drugs react different ways for different people and what you experienced was a very rare and uncommon reaction. No need to panic everyone else who is using it, it is not a common occurence at all, and it could have just as easily have happened with a completely different drug as it did with this one.

Yes Karen, you will need to do a slow taper to get off, both due to withdrawal issues and the rebound depression effects.

Thanks for the tip but I have been on it for a long time and suppose to come off it I will have to do it very gradually.

Careful with this drug! I took it for a couple of weeks and ended up in the hospital with swelling of my brain stem. It is very hard to get out of your system. I only wish I had read up more on it before taking it

I have been taking Cymbalta for almost six months for nerve pain. I would have like lightening pain hitting my ankle and started the Cymbalta and after a few weeks of taking 120 mg the pain went away. Now I have numbness in my leg and down my left arm. I don't know why my arm is going numb, if it might all be related to my back or not. I did take the gabatentin up to 900 mg and it didn't do anything. I am not depressed and don't have any different feelings in that department. Thanks

Well, it is possible to suddenly develop an allergy to something, even if you have been using it for awhile with no problems. Our bodies change as we age and that just happens sometimes.

It is hard to pinpoint if it is from the Cymbalta or something else you are using, there are many things that can cause an allergy, your perfume, your soap, shampoo, body wash, different meds and etc.

Your best bet is to listen to your doctor and the two of you can work to try to narrow down the cause.

Anybody taking more than 60mg a day?...I was doing good for 1mo on 60mg, now a week ago I started feeling aweful fatigue and some vertigo mostly all day...couldn't take Cymbalta at nite...it disturbed my sleep. So wondering if my Doc will increase the dose I take now...last time he did my fatigue went away...just wondering if Cymbalta works like Effexor where you need a higher than 75 mg dose to reach the part of the brain that deals with energy? Anybody taking a higher dose, and if so what does the Dr say is the reason for increasing it beyond Cymbaltas recommended 60mg dose?

Leslie, there are studies that prove it does relieve nerve pain, but only of a certain type and it does not work for everyone, unfortunately, since it is not a narcotic pain med and does not work like one. It is ONLY approved to treat DIABETIC NERVE PAIN, not other types of pain, and this, it also will not help everyone who suffers depression and the pain it causes.

I am very sorry to hear of what happened to your family, you are right, sometimes doctors do get a god complex, they worry far too much about addicting meds and think they know more about what you are going through than you do, and thus they do not treat appropriately or provide referrals as they should to someone who can.

Some doctor's also try to lump everyone's pain into the same category, saying if you are depressed, well that must be what is causing it, failing to look for other reasons for the pain, more of them need to stop throwing meds at the problem right away, and take the time to run some tests and make sure WHAT they are treating, before they treat it.

I suffer a chronic pain condition, and my doctor had me try cymbalta for awhile, taking me off of my Zoloft, well the Cymbalta helped with neither my depression, OCD, and anxiety or my pain. When I went in and told her that, she switched me back to my Zoloft, but instead of saying that was the only cause of my pain worsening, she simply ask me to try the switch for a few weeks, to see if that was the cause, when I saw her again and said no, the pain was still worse, even though my mental issues had improved, she immediately upped my dosage of pain meds,

It does not take a lot of time for them to do this and be reasonable about this, it seems your family ran into a doctor who just wouldn't listen to you, and you ended up with a tragedy out of it, very sad.

Oh, and here is the link that shows that Cymbalta is approved to treat diabetic caused nerve pain:

just an FYI for all of you strugeling with pain, no anti-depressant will help this problem, other than we can become depressed from the pain, it all boils down to this, we just lost a family member to suicide, the dr. was worried about addiction with xanax, prozack, well, he is dead now and had the dr. perscribed what had worked in the past our family and his Three Children would still have him alive. my advice, find a Very QUALIFIED Psychiatrist, Lyrica, for me after 23yrs. with 3 suicide attempts, my Psychiatrist has me on 1mg xanax 3x a day, 200mg a day of zoloft, Lyrica 100mg 3x a day, 2mg of Kolonapin as needed for break through panic attacks recently due to the death of our family member. Lyrica does relieve my nerve pain by 60% I hope this helps all of you. I am new to this site.

Cymbalta is an anti-depressant with no studies to prove it relievs pain, Look for a pain management dr.

I took Cymbalta for a couple monthes. The doctor wanted to change my depression meds, so weaned me off....BAD news! I had severe vertigo for 4 weeks!! That is quite a bit of time for me as I work at a hospital and the severe vertigo really messed with me being able to do my job. I don't recommend it.

My husband just started Cymbalta a week ago for chronic headaches. Other than making him tired, it has not made any difference with his headaches. He is now about to start his increase to twice a day. He has his reservations about the second dose cause he feels so tired on just a single dose. If any one else has tired it for chronic headaches of unknown orgin please email me. TY and good luck.

I used to take Pazil when I was 32 years old. I was going through a really stressful time in my life, a separation in my marriage ex wive from hell and all the older step kids, 20 and up trying to add fuel to the fire during this stressful time in my marriage, Needless to say they were the problem and could not let my husband and I work it out as they had to make their remarks and get into our business rather than let us alone to work things out between ourselves.. I was in a very depressed state and felt such a sence of unreality in my life at that time. I attemped suicide and it is through only the grace of GOD that I am still alive tday. I eeventualy got off paxil which was very hard for me due to withdrawal side effects which were very uncomfortable to me, Was so glad to have finally gotten off Paxil and will never try it again. I have been taking cymbalta for a couple of years now, I have no weird side effects from the cymbalta and it does seem to help me , Have been taking faithfully for a good time now and find although I still have those days but they are not as bad as they once were and there are alot of contributing factors in my life to have a need for such medication. One thing I have noticed that used to when I would get real depressed I would turn to alcohol as my crutcth. Then I would smoke marijuanna as a crutch to get away from the alcohol and sometimes in my depressed state I would use both together.Nowadays since I take my Cymbalta on a regular basis as I should I know it is working. I don't drink or smoke weed either one now. I have finally found a medication that helps without the wanting or needing of alcohol or drugs,Meaning I am much more able to deal with problems in life with a clearer and calmer attitude, I still have my bad days but these days are a far cry from wherre I have been. I also have degenerative disk disease and things wrong with my back from my cervical spine down to my lumbar spine. I have 15 out of 24 disks with something wrong with them Pain has become my middle name. I know some things are not as effective on other people as they are on others. I would highly recommend trying it myself. If it works for you like me great. If not keep searching for there is bound to be the right on out there for you.Myself I woud definately leave Paxil as a last shot in the dark type of effort. I plan to stay far away from it.
Thaks for you time
Martha

I have a similar situation, so I do understand, I also have the same experience with Cymbalta and ended up going back to my Zoloft. Cymbalta did not help either my pain or my depression, OCD, and anxiety disorder.

Cymbalta, and meds such as Lyrica and Neurontin, only work on certain types of nerve pain. So basically, you have a lot more going on other than just never pain with your back problems, so they won't help you much. Same thing I experienced. It really sounds like you either need to be in pain management or on a pain management regimen, I would suggest speaking to your doctor about these options. Chronic pain does not respond well to low dose, regular time pills, you usually need a higher dose of something that is time release for 12 hours or more.

I was given Cymbalta to replace Zoloft which I had taken for many years for clinical deperession. My doc said Cybalta had some pain relieving effects so had me try it. I became very depressed to the point of being suicidal. I changed back to Zoloft and in short order found the relief I needed. I still suffer from a lot of back pain due to having arachnoiditis L-2 to S-1, and a new ruptured disk at T-12 to L-1 level. Trying to stay away from surgery.... back is a MESS!!!

Gayle, as to the hives, since none of us here are medical professionals, we have no way of knowing that. It would be best to consult with your doctor or pharmacist.

As to switching, they are both the same class of meds, so you can usually switch from Paxil to Cymbalta or the other way, without any major problems, but your doctor would be the best person to make the decision, since none of us here can know how many other meds you have been taking, for how long, and how you react to changes.
