How Long After You Stop Suboxone Do You Have Withdrawal Symptoms? (Page 48)

Updated

My 63y/o mother survived chemo and radiation for throat cancer but was unable to stop the morphine 15mg twice a day without horrible withdrawal symptoms. Her MD put her on Suboxone 8mg/2mg once a day in June. She even took half the strip on most days and the doctor was very pleased and anticipated that she would be able to stop altogether in November. She unfortunately had a stroke 14 days ago and has been in the hospital. The first 7 days she was confused from the stroke but now she is weak and forgetful but is no longer disoriented. She told me tonight that she thought she needed her Suboxone. She said she thought she was going thru withdrawal. I was floored. She is not having any outward signs of withdrawal: no back/stomach pain, no nausea/vomiting, no sweating or tremors. Isn't 14 days long enough for the Suboxone to be completely out of your system and for withdrawal symptoms to have come and gone??? Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

Amen to that! I am off a year and two months now. I felt bad because I am free and I know the answer but I hadn't come back to the boards to help anyone. So I come back to tell people how to be free...how I got free and I have to believe that even though they don't want to hear about GOD, that they will cry out for Him in their desperation...He always turns up. Thanks for being brave and courageous and telling the truth.

She may have the psychological addiction even though no drug is in the body. In time this will pass. But if she's had a stroke I don't see what hon it is in giving her 4 mg

It is different for everyone. It depends on how long you have been taking it and how much. I went into withdrawal within 36 hours but some people take days before feeling withdrawal.

Someone mentioned vit d deficiency. I'm severely vitamin D deficient. However I noticed when my levels of vitamin D increased through both inj. and huge supplementation many of my joint pains diminished substantially, also getting my thyroid on track & intensive weight training i was able to reduce my meds by 75%!!! The dopamine from weight training began healing my brain as did the vit d & i lost any feeling of psy addiction (no clock watching for next dose, etc) i think sub & pain drs need to focus on eliminating all conditions that reduce natural dopamine so that ur mind doesnt rely upon subs & ops for the dopamine source! Good luck.

I have just ran out of my suboxone Yesterday morning and my family just relocated from Pa to NC and their clinics are totally different from the clinics up in Pa! I don't really feel too bad right now but I know even though I keep praying that I'm going to get sicker and sicker but that hasn't occurred yet, my question does everyone have to go through really bad withdrawals or is everyone different?

DeAnna: Withdrawals will start in about seven days and are not that painful. The problem is they last forever. You will be sore, sneezing, weak, and the longer it goes the more you will start to feel your body again. Read post 650 through the latest. You will learn enough to get through this as well as find many sources for more questions. TommyC

Thank you so much for that information! I feel so tired and my stomach is cramping worse than anything! My husband just tried to call my old doctor and asked him what he should do for me and he said I don't know what to tell her but to find someone in NC!! I have never been completely off of something because I was on a high dosage of narcotics for like 20+ years because of me having chronic pancreatitis so I went from narcotics to suboxone and never turned back! Even when I had surgery I went from iv pain medicine straight back to suboxone and the doctors didn't even know how to switch me back, but now I live in North Carolina I don't have a clue where to go, what to do, because it seems like everywhere down here is a cash clinic and not cheap at that! The cheapest one I found was 350.00 dollars just to be seen then 150.00 dollars a week for four weeks!! I just pray to God it doesn't get too much more worse

As Iam not an md id never dream of instructing you in anyway but for myself pepto bismal type mild otc preps helped for me but with your history, your symptoms should guide further care. If you can't tough it out ITS OKAY just do what you know or feels right for you. Hope you feel better soon and God bless.

I have been watching for additional posts to this thread but it has been quiet since the Fourth of July weekend. There was some division from a few people regarding the Parethesia (burning sensation) all over the body that never seemed to go away even after being off of Suboxone for fourteen months. My age is 70 and my history of narcotic use was nothing more than following the Doctors instructions and following the proper use of the pain medication they prescribed. I was on 100 mg of OxyContin plus three 750 Vocodin a day for a five year period then switched to 16 mgs of Suboxone a day for five years. This was all started because I had phantom pain in my arms. I would still be on OC'S if I had not taken it upon myself to seek help to become opiate free in order to evaluate my current pain situation. Unfortunately I was sent to a Doctor who did not detox me with Suboxone, but made me physically dependent on it for another five years. I took it upon myself to check into Henry Ford Maplegrove after weaning for seven painful months off of Suboxone. After 14 months of withdrawals and paws I was left with my complete body burning at levels of pain from 4 to 9 on a continuous basis.

I was referred to the University of Michigan Medical Center Nuerology Department for evaluation. The assessment I received there was that initially I should not have been put on an opiate to block the phantom pain as it's cause was not an issue of trama but an issue of neurological pain caused by damage from a Central Nervous System disorder. The opiates blocked the pain and therefore achieved the goal of the pain Doctors but did nothing but let the culprit causing my issue to go untreated for over 11 years. 14 months after stopping Suboxone I went on Opana (morphine) for six weeks to see what effect it would have on the burning. The Opana reduced the burning however the side affects were not tolerable and I had to stop taking the Opana. The Opana gave me severe stomach cramping and constipation like I have not seen in the past. Additionally, the cost of the Opana was $557.00 a month for 60 15 mg non tamper pills. A generic version would have been covered by my insurance with a $10.00 co-pay.

Where I stand today is I have damage to my Brain stem which has been untreated for 11 years. The diagnosis is Brain Pain Syndrome with a 10 to 20 percent chance of cure. The only relief is finding an opiate I can tolerate. Had the Doctor who originally prescribed me opiates investigated why I was in pain and sent me to a Neurologist my condition would be much different today. I am now on zolsidamide slowly building up to 400 mg per day hoping to stop the burning. I am at 125 mg per day at present without relief.

In my case the administration of opiates covered up the real problem. Now I go on an opiate to see if I can tolerate the side affects and wean off if they are to severe and try another. Most of you know how uncomfortable it is to get off of an opiate. It sure was not my intention to be on opiates for the rest of my life but it appears that will be the case unless the Neurologist finds a solution. The important point to remember from my case is you can have a CNS meltdown while on opiates and never know it.

The withdrawal and paws from Suboxone is like no other opiate. The malaise lasts forever. Muscle pain along with sore joints are not enough to make you immobile but very close. The biggest complaint is the paws lasts forever. Tomorrow I will see my new primary care physician and try to find a alternative to block the brain pain. Treatment for a misdiagnosis can result in a lifetime of misery. I started weaning in October of 2014 and have been in withdrawal pain since that time.

I have attended many seminars and was not surprised to hear that many people go back on Suboxone as they cannot deal with the paws or find an alternative to relieve their pain. This has been a nightmare which has not yet ended.

No! If she thinks its w/d probably is w/d. Can't assume all people get any drug out of system just because you think should be long enough to be out. Bet she knows what. w /d feels like

Just an update on what is going on. I detoxes in April of 2015 and I am still facing issues in August on 2016. The opiates hid the Parethesia and I still suffer from stomach cramps and malaise. I am 70 years old.

I also have a friend who is 52 and a body builder. He has been off as long as I have and is still having malaise and sore muscles. The neurologists say twoyearsrecovery at a minimum. I have several previous posts as do others which provide great information.

Methadone and sub's is a bad plan. Stay on pain meds for a few days and kick when your ready to quit. f*** crooked doctors.

What I know about suboxone now- is that it is NOT for long term maintenance. A person shouldn't be on it longer than 6 mos. I was on it too long - 1 1/2 yrs. PAWS hit me like a ton of bricks. Had to go into detox & short term recovery. Being 63- cold turkey withdrawal was too dangerous for me. Shortly after I got out of STR- I ended up on methadone maintenance. I believe methadone maintenance will work for me as long as I follow the rules of the program. Was able to earn another take home dose for Sat. Good luck everybody. Y'all are in my prayers. Peace...

I have several posts on this thread. I detoxed after seven months of weaning off of this crazy medicine. It has been seventeen months since I had my last dose of Suboxone. Unfortunately I will never be the same. Had I known the damage Suboxone would do to my brain stem I would have weaned off of the OxyContin and never touched the Suboxone. I continue to have malaise, parethesia, very sore lumbar muscles, and a damaged brain stem from using the Suboxone. My Neurologist from the University of Michigan told me there is only a ten percent chance of me kicking the above issues and returning to normal. The sad part is I have never taken a drug that was not prescribed for me by a medical doctor.

I hear of so many people who are afraid to even try to get off of Suboxone. I understand their fears. The problem isn't immense pain. The issue is the duration of time it takes before you are able to function well enough to take care of your family and job. There are people who post on this site and thread who think it is all over after thirty days. We never hear from them again. I often wonder if they really were successful or if they relapsed. I have met many people at seminars who have gone back on Suboxone because the quality of life after Suboxone is so poor.

Everyone's experience with this drug is different. I have not heard of anybody having a positive experience. That is not saying there aren't some out there somewhere. I was on this drug for five years. The doctor lost his license to practice. Other than his propensity to prescribe opiates, he was a great doctor.

It depends longer you are on the drug the longer it will take to get out of your system I was on the drug for around nine years at 20 milligrams a day and I would say it took me a good two months to start feeling better and it was about three to five days of hell

AB you have a prayer from me. I am in my eighteen month of being off of Suboxone and I still have residual issues I am dealing with on a daily basis. If you are on day two you made the hardest and boldest decision two days ago. Tha was to stop taking it. Physically you will not get terribly sick. The issue with Suboxone is the duration of the withdrawals and paws which are a 6 out of a 10 scale. You think you are past the worst of it only to wake up and have a terrible day.

You are on the best thread though. There are at least a hundred proven meds and ideas on this thread to get you through and back to as normal as your going to be. Much of this is dependant upon your time on Suboxone and your age. I am 70 yrs old and was on Suboxone for five years. Another friend is 53 and was on for 5 years. We compare notes about daily and believe the Doctors at the University of Michigan who say it will take at least two years to get back to normal if your going to get there. Good Luck and read the posts in the blog. You will see this is packed with great information.
