False Positive On Drug Test For Methamphetamine (Top voted first)

Updated

Hi, i am voluntarily drug testing for CPS because my daughter's father (who had physical custody) passed away suddenly due to a motorcycle accident leaving her "without a legal guardian" I have a previous history of using Methamphetamine. I am clean now or so i thought. Yesterday my test apparently showed positive for Methamphetamine. I know i haven't used. So far i have only came up with two possible explanations.

1. I just had to serve my ex boyfriend with a domestic violence restraining order. To make a long story short, not thinking, I ate some fast food that he insisted on leaving for me. And the 2nd being a cold medicine that I just remembered. I took one pill approximately 2 maybe 3 days ago called ST. JOSEPH DECONGESTANT-FREE HBP. Is it possible that this medicine caused a false positive? Thanks in advance for listening and any insight.

Thank you. ... If you don't mind me asking, What makes you say that?@@

If you didn't do meth then the lab test (GC/MS) should be negative and clear you.

Glad I could help. Since it is a long drive you might see if they can reschedule the hearing. Tell them you are waiting for lab results to come thru. I get calls like yours every once in a while. I am third party administrator for hair drug testing so I have heard similar stories. People usually call me trying to get a hair drug test to prove they haven't done a particular drug. It can get a little expensive but they usually don't care if they can clear their name. Good luck.

OMG. Those people are incompetent. Hair testing isn't all that expensive but I guess it is all relative. The name I use on this forum is my company name. Look it up on the web and give me a call. Ask for Marty

My step-daughter is a former meth user. She has been clean for over 3 months and involved in a case with CPS. She suddenly started testing positive again periodically to a very low degree. She is also hypoglycemic and I'm wondering if this could be causing her to positive tests. I've read where diabetes can cause a false positive but can't find any information on hypoglycemia. Is this a possibility and how do we handle the testing if it is? And yes.....CPS is incompetent!!!!

I used Meth one time on February 2,2014. First time in almost 2 years. Tested positive on the 3 what I new I would
. Just found out that 7 days later I tested positive again what was the 10th of February but My UA on the 8th was clean. All the ua's get sent to a lab. I don't understand how this could happen. I drink very little water or anything really because I can't keep My creatin level up I will get a diluted UA if I don't drink 60 grams of whey protein 2 hours before I UA and still times I'm diluted. I was very honest about My use but I didn't use between the 8th and 10th. How could this happen. I have court on Monday again and need help in why this could have happened. If you could help me understand why or if there is even an explanation.

I think it just plain sucks that when you drug test for CPS in California you are not allowed to communicate with the lab. I mean cmon that right there only proves that CPS has something to hide. Cristina Gil de montes of CPS Escondido changed my test results and ruined my life. And they won't allow me the simple request of being able to confirm the results with the lab. Cristina, I'm still waiting for a good explanation as to WHY!! This is not right and I know a lot will be unconvered when this changes. Shame on you CPS. You ruined my life, my sons life and I can't wait until the day I sue the hell out of you.

Thank you again. You really helped me stay strong and stand up for myself today in court. They were really trying push me to accept court ordered services and supervised visitation based on that positive test. The lab results haven't came back yet. I have a rehearinging on Friday. :) This is a 3 hour trip to the county where my case is filed and very costly. I pray the lab results are back by then. Lol Thank you again

EXPOMED... I am 52 and I had to submit a UA but had no reservation about it as I knew that there was no reason for concern. As it turns out, I tested positive for Meth I was in complete and utter shock. I demanded that they retest in a lab and they stated that the cup UA out in the field was as accurate as any lab test and that they had no need nor would they be sending it to the lab. Of course they had the UA and I could not have anything else done. I felt that I had no rights at this point..Until I read your reply. I am taking Adderall 30mg ir 2xdaily, morphine sulfate 60 mg ER, amitriptyline, Prozac and Neurontin . I have been taking a few over the counter medications for sinus and cold symptoms which included: vicks vapor rub, vicks inhaler(which I use regularily) Sudafed and Nytquil for bed time a few nights. Could any of this of caused the same, a false positive for methamphetamine? Thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter. I will be attending a hearing on Dec 7th and would like to be able to argue my case at the hearing, with facts and an educated argument. Sincerely, Jade

The tests that are coming back (and unfortunately I don't know how to read these test) are saliva tests. She had clean tests until her case worker changed. I'm trying to cover all our basis.I understand that we have to be cautious about what's the truth here. CPS is a joke. They want her to have a job, but expect her to just leave at the drop of a hat to come in when they say. There is a lot of problems there and I wouldn't put anything past them.

I just wanted to check in and let anyone who was concerned know the verdict. After the cys investigator received my medical records he called me to schedule a meeting. I was scared and panicking because of the horror stories I've read about cys online. I thought he was coming to take my babies away. I was wrong, he came to apologize and close my case. He admitted to marking me as an addict and thinking he would have to put us on a safety plan because of his own uneducated ignorance. He wasn't educated on false positives and thought a false positive for something like methamphetamine was impossible. He looked into it and reviewed my medical records. I was given a certain medication that i still don't know the name of. That medication causes false positives most of the time. He confirmed with someone who is extremely educated about false positives. He told me he plays bad cop\good cop alot and he just happened to be the bad cop when he came to my house. He had to meet my husband and that was it. No further questions, drug tests, check ins, nothing. I am happy to say I was lucky. I had a investigator that truly cared about his job and children's well being. He took the time to investigate even after assuming I was no good. Then he admitted his faults and apologized. My boys are very happy, healthy and they're home, with me. He told me if I would have taken any medication by my own hand, not prescribed or given in the hospital, it would of been a completely different ball game. Thank you for your helpful advice. You gave me a fighting chance and a good back up plan if things had went badly. Thank you for takeing the time to help us mothers in need. :)

My first advice would be to contact a lawyer who knows about drug testing. Maybe a lawyer who deals with work place drug testing issues. My next advice is to get a consultation with a Medical Review Officer (MRO). A MRO is a doctor trained to interpret drug test results and say (or testify) why something might be false positive. You can do a search for one at aamro.com. If they did a urine test on her and they did not do a GC/MS confirmation test the lawyer should be able to hammer them pretty good. A GC/MS test is the gold standard for drug testing and would have given the complete picture of what is going on. The other thing you can do is a Hair 5 Drug Panel with Extended Opiates test which I am sure she will be negative for methamphetamine. A hair drug test is meant to show consistent use over time. A 1.5 inch sample, cut at the scalp line, will go back 90 days.

If the worker said "send it to the lab" my best guess is that it was, initially, a rapid screening test. Sending the sample to a lab is a good thing because they should do a confirmation test using the Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method. I am guessing it will show negative for meth.

Hi They lost my test. It never made it to the lab. They also lost my negative tests. They tested me again, same result. This time the judge told the worker to personally walk it to the lab. Is it me or does something seem funny here? In the mean time my daughter is grieving the loss of her dad thinking her mom is in denial and wants out of this craziiness. I know i can't afford a hair test but how much it cost? Thanks again

I'm assuming it was a urine drug test. My next question would be: was it a urine dip test like you can do at home or was it a full GC/MS lab test. It sounds like it might have been a lab test. I doubt if being hypoglycemic would cause a false positive but I am not a medical professional. Part of it depends on what meds she might be on but for the most part being hypoglycemic won't cause a false positive. If you read some of my other posts I usually recommend people seek the help of an MRO. A medical review officer is a doctor trained to read and interpret drug test results and say why something might be causing a false positive. You can find an MRO in you r area by looking at their association web site aamro.com. Look for a link that says something like "locate a mro". You say she is a former user and clean for 3 months. In my dealing with substance abuse issues I have found that people sometimes aren't completely honest about what is going on. Since I do a lot of hair drug testing for custody issues it might be a way for her to shut up child protective services if she comes up negative on the limits of detection (LOD) hair drug test. {edited for privacy}

I work in a hospital lab. Adderal is amphetamine and will give a positive response for the amphetamine test. Adderal is also very close structurally to methamphetamine and if present can cause a false positive test for methamphetamine. We have seen this in our lab. The "screening" drug screen tests often cross react in this case and the only way to sort it out is to send it to a more sophisticated lab to be tested by Gas Chromatography/Mass spectroscopy which can tell the difference between amphetamine and methamphetamine. Usually the tested specimens are only saved for a few days so it may be too late to retest the original specimen.

In these situations I recommend people consult with an MRO to see what might be causing a false positive. A Medical Review Office (MRO) is a doctor trained to evaluate this type issue (false positives). You can find one by doing a search at aamro.com. Also I would do a search on the internet to find instances of "false positives for the sweat patch". I don't know if the patch is a very accurate way of testing. One of the most accurate way to check for drug use is hair drug testing. I deal with some of the courts in the State of New Jersey and the judge usually court orders a hair drug test. With a hair drug test all screening positives are sent to confirmation using the GC/MS method of testing. Ask whoever is conducting the test if the results were confirmed by GC/MS. If they were not confirmed by GC/MS you might be able to build a greater case for your hubby. GC/MS is the "gold standard" of ALL drug testing. You might look at getting a lawyer who can shoot holes in the use (accuracy) of the sweat patch. Hope I have given you some good insight.

I had to take my fiance to the ER today. She passed out and never woke up. Well I talked to the ER doctor and he said she had everything but coke in your system. Methamphetamine, methadone and every pain pill there is. I'm confused as we are around each other 24/7. We do take percocet and xanax but the methadone and methamphetamine I don't know. I do take fioricet and trazodone and I heard that floricet can give a false+. Can someone help please?
