Mylan Ms Contin (Top voted first)

Updated

My pharmacy was out of my regular brand ms contin, I had to wait a few days (they suddenly didn't have the medication I got there for over 10 years. seems strange to me.

A day or two after I started taking these, my leg pain came back, I have burning pain all the time, with my regular brand ( I think they are by Purdue) small darker blue pills, I never had pain even if I overworked my leg.

These new ones are larger and made by mylan, they seem to work ok in the morning, but the pain gets worse when I usually do things in the afternoon.

The others stay with me all day, I start to get pain late in the evening a few hours before my next pill is due.

I have learned to live with the others, got things I needed to be done, with these I can see me becoming a couch potato.

Has anyone experienced anything like this, tomorrow I'm going to the pharmacy,( rite aid) , and give them back they are useless.

I am a disabled veteran with a spine injury. The VA pharmacy changed the manufacturers brand from what I usually received from them to Mylan MS60's and I got sick with the classic opiate withdrawl symtoms and little pain relief. I have had to endure the weekend without proper pain management. Not sure if I will be able to have this issue corrected. The ingredients in the pill changed and I think I have had a reaction to ingesting these different substances. Also the pills are enormous. I have had problems with swallowing large pills and have notified my doctor regarding these issues in the past. I also have had severe constipation problems and I believe the larger pills will also increase this problem. It is unfortunate for me as my doctor and I had made great strides by adjusting my medicine to correct the constipation issues. How are they allowed to do this without the doctors or my prior knowledge? It's like the pharmacists have the power to override my doctors prescribed treatment without regard to my medical conditions.

I had to switch drug stores to get the same brand I was taking before.

Just recently I was given the large ones again, I promptly took them back and told them I do not want or ever want to take anything made by Mylan.

BTW Mylan sent me a letter telling me after checking they could not determine that anything was wrong with my meds.

I wonder how they did this checking, they never got any of the pills off me to test so how do they know they are OK. sounds like BS to me.

I have been taking MS Contin for yrs for a spinal cord tumor. Only reaction has been constipation. New form manufactured by Mylan has caused multiple side effects, upset stomach, dizziness, heart palpitations as well as diff swallowing such a large pill. Pharmacy states nothing can do. Scared to take due to severity of side effects.

I was on the Mylan 15's, I was taking them at first like I took my old small 15's for about 2 weeks.

The druggist suggested I take them at different intervals, that didn't work either.

I went back to my doctor and he gave me another perscription which I took to a different drug store that carried my old brand (Mallinckrodt).

I went back on the old brand but now my old brand doesn't seem to be working as well as it did, to get pain relief I need to take an extra 15 in the am where as before the 3, 15's carried me thru the whole day.

What do I do now, I don't have an endless supply of extras, the extras I have are from what I saved over all the years I have been on Ms Contin, when I was tapering down as I could stand it.

I think I need to go see my pain specialist again, I was so well adjusted I only had to see him once or twice a year.

I seriously think this junk disrupted my system making my old reliable brand less effective.

You are so right! I took the small ones for years with good results. These new big ones are doing nothing for my pain.

Spanky, I went and had my prescription filled at CVS, it was worth a try- they had the small ones that Walgreens had before. Finally, after suffering 2 months with the Mylan, I'm back on what I had before. Check with your nearest CVS. Looks like Walgreens is trying to save money using the Mylan product. The Mylan pill is twice the size. I wonder if they are putting a filler or something in it and that's why it doesn't work properly. I could not get an answer as to why the pill is larger only that it was supposed to be the same ingredients. If they are using a filler, asprin or something else, people might be allergic to. It doesn't see right that a pharmacy can change what a doctor supplies. It was my oncology nurse that explained to me that different manufacturers produce the same drug, but that it can be off 20% as to how it works.

I ask myself, Why isn't the FDA or someone looking at this issue? Also, I'm one to question, think of the elderly (I'm 61) that has no one to help explain and they take what's given to them.

Good luck everyone,
Susan

I had the same problem, you will see my post below from March 11th. I switched my pharmacy from Walgreens to CVS. That's what you should do - here's what I posted in March.

Bob, please see my comment below from Mon, May 05 '14:

Walgreens switched their vendor so they no longer carried the original brand of ms sulfate I was taking that worked! After doing some research, I called CVS to make sure they carried a different brand, which they did. Mine are a small pink/purple pill that works correctly. It's time released, which is great and does it properly. The Mylan brand from CVS is larger, but doesn't seems to time release properly, helped with the pain a little at times. I think it's filled with filler and who knows what that might be? The FDA should investigate this. I'm 62, have internet access and was able to solve the issue by changing where I got my prescription filled.

Think of the pour souls, elderly people that don't know that they can get the proper brand by having it filled at a pharmacy that has the correct brand that works.

It seems to me that Walgreen's may be trying to save money by using this other generic brand. They told me no one else complained - I can't believe that. Look at the complaints here. There's probably many more, but people taking this type of medication are older and may not have access to the internet as we are so fortunate to.

I suggest you have your prescription filled at another pharmacy. Call them first and be sure to find out who the manufacturer is. I was lucky enough to have had one of the small pills was taking so that I could research who the manufacturer is. If you don't have that, you can search on the internet and look for the pill you were taking.

I hope this helps you and others that are going through this issue.

I was switched to this brand MsContin 60mg after being on OxyContin 60mg for 2.5 yrs. (tolerance is a b****!) I told my Dr that I should of been given the 100mg x3 daily, but he felt that since I never have taken any of the morphine type pain meds, that 60mg 3x daily would be enough..... F*** Noooooo..... MsContin at any dose sucks Big Time for relieving pain!! Oxycontin is 100x more effective at blocking pain than MSContin.........

Yeah the Mylan ER isnt bad, just have to get use to them, as with every medicine that might have slightly different release points.

Oral oxycontin (perdue brand) has a 60-86% bioavailability.....
Oxycodone IR(genaric)has a BA of 40-60%
Morphine Sulfate has a 20-25% BA in all forms (ER and IR).

There were originally 5 plants that manufactured MS Contin. There are now two. The larger pills have more filler in them as a deterrent to people who misuse the medication. This makes it much more difficult for addicts, but once again, the people who really need the medication are the ones who suffer. I had to come off of a medication that worked fine for pain relief because my kidneys could not process the fillers in the medicine.

Morphine Sulfate ER is an Extended Release medication. This is apples to oranges comparison. The percentage is for over a 24 hour period for the MS Contin. The Oxycondone/Oxycontin are both short acting; in and out in 6 hours. This is regardless of dosage. I am both an RN retired and a 14 year Chronic Pain, Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue fighter and have been on MS Contin (brand) every 8 hours and Oxycontin (generic (no brand available) every 6 hours as needed for breakthrough pain since 2004) with over 85% effective pain control.

Well, I have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, multiple herniated discs (L3, L4, L5, S1). I was given a brace (what a joke)! Wore it anyway, then my T vertebra started to pop out. Now I cannot use my cane, as it causes much pain. Doctors had me on pain relievers, which were giving me some relief. Showed up at my doctor's appointment and was told there is NOTHING wrong with my back, pulled my meds and was told to go home and take 20 Aleve a day for all he cared, and don't come back! Doctor Vandaro with Regional Pain Management told me that after inj'ing a bunch of s*** that never worked. What to do...?

My doctor switched my Vicodin 7.5, 90 tabs to Ms Contin er 30 mg, 60 tabs. I did get the Mylan brand but I no nothing about this medication. At first I was scared to take this I thought morphine sounds like strong stuff doctor's give you in Hospitals. It's killing me since this change 9 months ago. I'm trying to make them work but no matter what it feels like I'm taking nothing it has no effect on me whatsoever. I even tried to take a separate over the counter pain reliever with the morning tabs but these pills are no use, and yes, I'm nothing more than a couch potato now. Because of this I'm feeling more and more like doing nothing and feeling unhealthy. My doctor has been playing hardball since the Government comes down hard on them when so many people over do it and O.D or it gets into the wrong hands. The president now calling a "opiate epidemic emergency" things will get even worse. I have no idea why my doctor even started me at such a low dose of 15 mgs after taking the prescribed Vicodin I had been taking for 8 years which releaved my pain fine. I had to wait 5 months untill he gave me 30 mgs but it doesn't matter they don't work anyway. I'm suffering from several permanent injuries from a car accident. I'm going to look for a another doctor.

Milan brand is INFERIOR in a BIG way. I refuse to get anything made by Mylan. They do not work even 50% of other brands. I had to take double just to get any pain relief. Report this experience to the FDA. They should not be allowed to get away with this
