Levothyroxine Numb Hands, Dizzy, Itching, Stomach Issues
(Newest replies first)

I had a total throdectomy 2 years ago due to thyroid cancer. I have been on 150 - 200mg Levothyroxine daily. Side effects are - now and again my heart will beat once really hard, when i wake up my hands feel numb and fingers tingle, get dizzy/drunk feelings, dry itchy skin, dry sore eyes, stomach pains and constipation. Sometimes i feel like i am turning into a hypercondreact. Does anyone else feel like this? I am due another blood test next month.

Thank god I'm not the only one. I've had the same op, plus ro, iodine. I've been on levothyroxine 8 months and my body has aged like 100 years, thought I had MS. I was on 150mcg, then 125, now 150. I had a headache all day today and an aching throat, sore joints, hip ache, focus issues, no spark, and sleep a lot. No end to this s***?!

“All your other side effects are normal?” Seriously.

This sounds like your level is too high, I had this problem before my total thyroidectomy . I was hyperthyroid and had dry eyes and eye pain constantly .

Dry eyes is a side effect of hypothyroidism. Dry everything really.

Guys, you can analyze the hell out of Levothyroxine, you can discuss and compare your symptoms until the cows come home. The answer is to get off this junk drug and switch to an NDT. This way you get all of the hormones you need, T4, T3, T2, T1, T0 and calcitin all in reasonable ratios. Doctors are not capable of medicating you to optimal health on Levo (although it can be done). The biggest drawback encountered on day 1 is that they will medicate you to TSH because they do not know any better, that will guarantee that you will be under medicated and suffer all of the symptoms you read here. For your part, you must read and study this subject because you need to be in control of your health. In the case of thyroid endocrinology doctors are not very well educated. They might be known as good Endocrinologists but that's because they are probably very good with diabetes, thyroid issues are far more complicated and they do not know how to juggle all of the variables. Educate yourself, your health and maybe life will depend upon it.

150 - 200 mcg is a colossal dose! You have probably become hyperthyridic (i.e. over active "thyroid" condition). Try dropping back to 150 mcg and see if you can get rid of the palpitations, that is the most dangerous condition. Actually 150mcg is still pretty high, but not knowing your weight I shouldn't guess at a solution.

I am absolutely horrified by the level of medical mismanagement that I read on this site over and over. These poor patients with very serious medical conditions are left hanging out to dry to fend for themselves. It happened to me but I am educated to PhD level so I was able to do my own research and had the confidence to walk out on MDs who were incompetent. I am now in a position to self regulate and I am fine. However, to begin with I was completely new to this field but as chance would have it I first had a superb GP and we hacked our way through things until I was fit and healthy. He retired, but I had enough knowledge to carry me through the next two incompetent MDs - and I am still fit in spite of their efforts. Good luck to all on this site, I cry inside for you.

Sounds like you are being over medicated. I started on 150mcg, which, like you was too much - I had all of your symptoms. We then dropped to 125mcg which was too little, I was very sleepy. We went to 137 mcg, again too much and we finally settled on 130mcg which was perfect. That is called a binary search. I suggest you ask your doctor to try that. Don't stay hyper for very long, it's not good for your heart. You might want to try 137 next, then assess how you feel. It is a big nuisance for your doc, but once you have it right you will not be pestering him/her much more.

Had thyroid removed 7 months ago. Was prescribed levothyroxine 150. Always exhausted and muscle aches in hip and butt. I just feel like I have no energy. Doctor does not seem to be concerned. Now experiencing vertigo and blurred vision off and on. Anyone else having these issues?

Hi I have been on levo for a couple months and I have recently been having pain in hip I thought it was just related to all the other leg knee and foot and ankle pain that I have anyways but normally my hip doesn't hurt so now I'm wondering. And also recently my hands have begun to tingle and feel cold and my feet 2. so I decided tonight to look up the tingling hands to see if that was a side effect and come to find out I'm not the only one experiencing this. I wonder if I should talk to my doctor about maybe lowering my dose? Thanks

Jason I know what you're going thru. Had T.C. and removed 14 years ago and over time my Levo went to 250mcg. I was always tired when under that. I didn't realize it was causing chest pain, panic/anxiety, trouble sleeping, night sweats, irritability, dry eyes, dry skin, etc. I just kept it to myself thinking it was in my head. Then I went to the E.R. with chest pain and a VERY elevated blood pressure. I was admitted and kept 2 days at which time a cardiologist came in and said my Levo was WAY TOO HIGH! He immediately dropped it to 200mcg. When I was released I found a Endocrinologist who was amazed I was still here! Too much can damage your organs and cause heart attacks! I was lucky! So he is weaning me down to 125mcg over 3 months. I noticed my moods are better but the first week I drop the dosage it's hell! Can't sleep no matter what is prescribed, mood swings are back, tired, brain fuzz, and hungry all the time! By the time things settle down it's time to drop it again! So Jason if you are having a problem or doubts get to an ENDOCRINOLOGIST! My Gen. Prac. did a great job but they can't be in complete knowledge of the thyroid and that little bugger controls a lot of things in the body! Best wishes from one who's been there! :)

I've taken levoxyl or synthroid to balance out my temperamental hypothyroidism. I'm at 138mcg currently. My weight, dosage, intrusive, damaging symptoms ... are always an issue for me. My doc doesn't seem too concerned! However I fell different about gaining 15lbs in a week , then just 10lbs more several day's later, my face washing off, seriously raw areas that get larger and never heals. Almost looks like I'd taken a sander to it. It's making me crazier, especially as a someone suffering from body dystopia, a recovering anorexic/bulimic . The balding, peeling weak skin and nails & so much more aren't okay by any means. The side effects are endless. Leaving me unsure of what med is causing the issue . .. or if I'm hypochondriac. Please if there's anything else to combat hypothyroidism let me know? As well as a legit list of all side effects, as well as med combos that you can't mix with levoxyl & synthroid, please?

Same here. The medicine makes me feel worse than I do without it, but I have to take something. I have chest pain, back pain, Gerd, sore throat, stuffy sinuses, constipation, overall feeling of unwell, fatigue, funny feeling in my eyes, panic attacks, the list goes on and on. Went off Levothyroxine for a week and told dr. about all the horrid side effects and he said I was undermedicated and upped my dosage from 50mcg to 100mcg and the side effects are all back! Why do they seem to only want to prescribe this junk??? It's causing more problems than without it!

I am on 50MCG Levothyroxine. I have lost lot of hair and itchy head. I didn`t understand until I read in my Levothyroxine side effects. Since than I have reduced
my 7 days daily one a day to just 5 days. Please let me know if I have done the right
or not. I will go to see my G.P at my annual check up.
