Re: Cathy (# 34)
For anyone reading this, please read my previous comments on this thread to catch up on my situation with propranolol, as well as my personal history, dosing, etc, if you'd like to follow my progress. I am going to try to post updates on my results, to hopefully get feedback as well as help other people out.
My last dose of propranolol was Wednesday 9/13/17. Since coming off of it 17 days ago, I've actually noticed my hair seems to falling out more. Before coming off it, I just noticed thinning, especially in the front/peak. You can see my scalp through my hair, and this seems to be getting worse as I now notice clumps of hair in my shower drain. I didn't really notice these clumps before. I am HOPING that my hair is now falling out bc since stopping the medication, perhaps my hair growth cycle is regenerating - so older, thinner, weaker hairs are now being pushed out by the regrowth of newer, stronger hairs that were not coming through before due to the medication. I am hoping this is the case, though I have not yet noticed any new hairs in their place. I suppose it'll take a little more time to see if this is the case.
Other things I am doing now, which may also be contributing, but I am washing my hair daily with the nioxin 2 noticeably thinning kit (shampoo, conditioner, scalp treatment) I am also using rogain, and taking 2 supplements (gnc ultranourishair for men and resvitale beauty 3, you can see the ingredients online if you look them up). For styling, I am using nioxin pro thick spray, hairspray, and gel for styling. When I wash my hair and apply the products, I'd like to note that I am being extremely delicate and gentle to not wash or dry my hair roughly.
Does anybody have any insight on the above hair growth cycle theory, as well as my hair care regimen? I will repost more results in a couple weeks. For anyone curious of my hair style and length, see G-Eazy or Zac Efron from Baywatch lolol.

Have u consulted a dermotologist and have you had your thyroid hormones checked. You need to be taking supplement biotin. Not familiar with what u r using. Dr Oz had a show on this topic not so long ago and u can find that by googling Dr. Oz and i think u can do a search on the topic and watch on utube. I do remember that monaxinil 5 % was recommended. I wouldn't wash my hair but about every 3rd day, do not color or perm. I am fighting to save what hair i have left. I have to take propranolol for involuntary body movements but have cut dosage in half but it is ineffective so i will stop once i consult with my doctor.
Re: Jennie (# 38)
I'm taking 5000 units of Biotin now.
My hair isn't growing back in which bothers me.
I've had weight gain....
My hair literally broke off. 14 inches as far as the weight gain its water weight went from 127 down to 110 pounds. From 180 mg to 60 mg. Just excercise regularly. Eat healthy. This medication cured my migraines. Still my blood pressure is up just recently quit smoking! Hoping this will be the answer.
Re: Leslie (# 21)
I’m in the same boat you are in! I’m taking 60mg a day for migraines. My Dr. had bumped me up to taking them twice a day but I stopped after they were making me insanely tired! I have almost no migraines or headaches after a lifetime of having them!! Wow... wonderful... & then my hair began thinning (it’s was already very fine)! Ugh.... this sucks big time!!
I've been taking Propranalol 40mg 2x/day for almost a year. I'm a 27 year old healthy female. I was on it for anxiety. I've always had long, full, beautiful hair. Recently (the last 6 months or so) I've noticed a significant loss of hair. It comes out in clumps and I "shed" all day, every day. My hair is very brittle and and fine now. It used to be thick and very healthy. I consulted my dr. today about it and she determined it was due to the medication. I will be halting the use of this and sending every hope and prayer that my hair grows back. This is one of the worst side effects , in my opinion. I never had a problem with weight gain, that I know of. I guess once I'm off we will see.
Glad to know I'm not the only person with this issue!
Re: Jenn (# 11)
I have been on 80 mg for over a year and the hair loss I have had is really quite shocking and frightening, was not told of that side affect when I started them for anxiety!my hair was very long but now a thin frizzy mess!
Kpeez (# 43) --
I myself have not had weight gain but the hair loss has been terrible clumps of it every morning in shower on pillow when I wake up! I had beautiful hair and very long but now after almost two years on them at 80mg a day my hair is brittle and dry, frizzy and short, was not told of that side affect when I started on them! I'm so depressed by it because my hair was my crowning glory! Not anymore! I hope this brings to light the awful side affects of propanolol at 80mg a day!
Oh my, this had made me feel better after a trip to the hairdressers, I'm on between 80 and 120mg a day dependant on how I'm feeling. I thought it had been falling out but wasn't sure if it was the paranoia as I suffered really badly from my hair falling out a few years ago.
I went in today for a cut and colour after finally being able to go back to my bright coloured hair.. but my hairdresser decided against it on first look and when it was straight (I have naturally wavy hair) you could see the missing chunks of hair.. so instead of a cut and colour I have ended up with one big cut to level it off.. I'm dreading going back next time.. fingers crossed it doesn't get too bad.. I've only been taking the tablets now for 2/3 months, they do help in some ways but my long beach wavy style hair was one of the things I had left that I loved..
I have been taking propranolol for 6 months to treat my migraine attacks and it does work. however, I have been loosing my hair dramatically. Any suggestions?
I have been on propranolol since June which will be 7 months now , the dramatic hair loss I am suffering is breaking my heart Is this reversible ? X
Re: Diddyp (# 49)
Hi I've been on them for two years now and my hair was so thick and long, now it extremely dry brittle, falling out in clumps, I now only take ten to twenty mg, my hair used to be so healthy! I don't know if there is a alternative! Doctor never told me side affect were so bad! It should be off market! I don't take on a daily basis now! Soon as you stop taking the anxiety comes back! This is just awful!
Hey Everyone! Here is a follow up to my journey coming off Propranolol, sorry for late update as I said I'd post, but here it is!
At about 2 months off propranolol I noticed my hair started falling out more, I actually ran my hand through it and clumps came out. This was odd to me and made me really nervous, I hoped it was part of the hair growth cycle pushing out the older hairs for newer, healthier ones. This lasted for a few days and then the shedding subsided.
Since coming off of Propranolol on September 13th, my hair has started to look a lot healthier I grew it out and recently cut it shorter and though it still appears thin, I feel it is stronger and healthier. Still not to the point that it was, the thickness still hasn't returned, but it looks better than it did when I was on the medication. Coming up on January 13th 2018 I will have been off the medication for 4 full months.
As for my hair program, I wash my hair with Nioxin products once per week. I take GNC Ultranourish Hair for men daily, vitamin methyl B12 daily, and a keratin/collagen product by Resvitale called Beauty 3. I'd like to start increasing my protein intake with more shakes and increase my omega 3 content with fish oil and see if that helps make the hair healthier as well.
Re: jodi143 (# 29)
Me too
I was on 10 mg for 2.5 months and I stopped it 20 days ago and my hair is still falling out dramatically
Re: Magic (# 37)
Is your hair still falling out after stopping?
I was on 10 mg for 2 months and I stopped 20 days ago and my hair is still falling out like crazy
Re: Regina (# 17)
How is your hair now? Did it regrow after stopping propanolol
I had been taking Atenolol and it was reformulated and my pharmacy could no longer provide it at the same price. So my doc prescribed propranolol 30 mg in the am withi. 2 weeks I've lose 20% of my hair. My hair is everywhere clogging up the shower drain filled up in the vacuum cleaner bar and I cry as I cut it free. It's in the food I cooked for Thanksgiving & Christmas even though I put on a scarf when I took down the Christmas tree I found it on the branches. I call my doctors office and they told me it must be my nerves. No help! I have thyroid issues and take 2 types of thyroid mess but was assured my THS is just slightly off. I'm lost.
Re: Thinning curls (# 8)
OMG! I am 51 and have been on propranolol for 5 yrs for migraine and hypertension. I noticed slight thinning over the last few years. Most recently it has gotten progressively worse. Thought it was the water pill I’m on or the stress I’ve been experiencing. I decided to google side effects of propanol..... and there it is Hair loss! It’s not even listed on the envelope of the med. it’s been a lifesaver for my migraines but time to find something else.
Hi there
Since my last post I’ve stopped taking propranolol but as yet I haven’t seen any signs of hair regrowth yet. I’ve now discovered that the other drug I’m on which is Dosulepin causes hair loss too which I’m trying to wean myself off - it’s day 5 so early days too. It’s really distressing that both these drugs which really work cause some distressing side effects - some of which I can put up with but not sure I can deal with hair loss. Not sure whether it’s the cause if my weight gain or just getting older , eating more and because of anxiety and depression not be so active. I’ve been off propranolol for 3 weeks now and trying to deal with my anxiety without meds which is hard. I’m going back to doc to see if there are any other meds that deal with anxiety - that doesn’t cause hair loss.
Re: Maryella (# 12)
Sure hope it’s reversible. My bangs are thin and scalp shows. I’m on 40mg for heart racing. Recently I was away from home and noticed heart racing. Thought I was dehydrated. Realized I hadn’t taken medication for several days. Immediately got better with just one dose. But recently I googled meds that cause hair loss and propranolol was on the list. I will wean off and hopefully get my bangs back. I will post results.
