Stopped Cymbalta Cold Turkey 4 Days Ago (Top voted first)

Updated

pain doc prescribed 30 mg per day 4 months ago. I was in the hospital for a month a year ago as my spine collapsed and I was fused from C-3 to T-3 with lots of giant screws, 4 titanium rods etc. I had had a C-3 to C-7 fusion in 1997 which was way less complex and dangerous. I have taken a number of different meds over the years and over time I developed severe allergic to all narcotics and methadone. The recovery has been slower than I had hoped but I try and cope by exercising, leading as normal a life as possible, walking a mile daily using a walker n our hilly neighborhood. I have some spasticity, difficulty done fine things with my hands (I.e. putting on earrings, stying my hair, applying makeup, etc., )buttons buckles on and on. I have terrible proprioception,. Like most people in my situation some days are better than others. NOW the cymbalta - it did seem to help with m hands, arthritis, spasticity. Last week I developed terrible rash with weeping blisters. I stopped my cymbalta immediately cold turkey. I do not seem to feel terrible - am going to hit the wall at some time. My current daily meds consist of 2 mg. Xanax, 4 mg. Tizanidine, 1800 mg. Gabapentin, 80 mg protonix, 300 mg. Wellbutrin SR (which was cut in half when I went on Cymbalta), , estrogen, meloxicam and lortab (which does nothing and I rarely take it). I'm 70 but inspoite of all this stuff I look younger. PLEASE REPLY REGARDING COLD TURKEY QUITTING OF CYMBALTA or anything else you may shed light on.

Hi, Martie! I'm very sorry about what you've been through.

How did you pinpoint the rash as being from the Cymbalta?

There's a chance it could be from any of the medications you're taking, or totally unrelated, it could just be an environmental allergy.

My other question is, why are you taking unopposed estrogen?

That is very dangerous, regardless of your age, since it greatly increases risks of cancer and stroke. Additionally, if you have enough estrogen in your body and are adding more, it could be contributing to some of your symptoms, such as pain, joint stiffness and etc. It will also start to affect your skin and there's a chance you may not look younger than you are for much longer. It should never be taken without Progesterone, preferably the natural type and not a synthetic progestin, since they are also very risky. The natural ones are much safer and that's actually the hormone that's needed after menopause, not estrogen.

Our bodies continue to produce some estrogen for the rest of our lives, it's progesterone that we stop producing and desperately need.

Thanks for your reply. I plan on seeing my doctor the end of the next week and will discuss a more appropriate medication in lieu of the estrogen. I have not been prescribed progesterone after my hysterectomy when I was 39 as they left one ovary. Strange that my mom took estrogen and premarin until she died peacefully at age 96 last fall.

As far as the cymbalta is concerned I had not changed any other meds.. the reaction was similar to other meds I could not tolerate, but is was worse than any others I've had. As soon as I stopped a few days later my skin was healing and I didn't have the feeling that I was itching inside too.

It's been over 1 week and I have not had much going on in regard to stopping abruptly with no tapering. I felt slightly jittery the first few days only. I read of others here who have brain zaps etc. I have had no side effects. Will I still possibly "hit the wall " as some say.

Thanks and all the best to you.
