Re: Jan (# 20) Expand Referenced Message

Debondox ws also banned in australia, personally the drug company should be held accountable but naturally they wont be.
My daughters life has been hell and it is now also very hard on her husband and child. I feel,so much for any of you that have been victims of this drug. I only had one child and it has been a difficult journey with the results of my taking this evil drug

I took Debendox in 1968. It was my third pregnancy. My youngest son, who is now in his late forties has similar symptoms which also appear to suggest he has bipolar disorder. He has been treated for severe anxiety in the past but has never been given a proper diagnosis. He had no developmental delays but suffered from a range of problems in childhood, i.e. ADHD, school refusal, mild dyslexia and anxiety, non of which were treated at the time.

Re: Julie (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

Hi julie and thankyou for your post which has really opened my eyes to the affects of this drug. I took Debendox for most of my pregnancy for severe sickness.prescribed in good faith by my gp. My son was born in 1982 and shortly after, the drug was banned. He was born with ten fingers and toes andcwas perfect in my eyes. However reading your post , i can relate to all of your own experiences with your daughter. My son hss always been difficult , but as he grew and developed, his mental issues have reared its ugly head. He has few or no friends, cant hold down a job, is terrible with money , has no empathy or sympathy, is always the victim , has outbursts of inappropriate anger , cant maintain a relationship , and so the list goes on. I have wondered if he is autistic or bi polar or even psychopathic , but since researching on line , im now convinced that Debendox is to blame. What can we do to help our children ? where do we go from here. ? I would dearly like to hear from others in the same boat . Thankyou .

Re: Deb (# 16) Expand Referenced Message

You have also described my son who is 35 years old. I took Debendox for most of my pregnancy , and have only recently discovered the problems surrounding this awful drug. He is , and always has been, just as you describe your own son. Its like i still have a boy child who is 35 years of age. I worry continually about him, as he always seems to be in some sort of trouble. In debt , no friends , cant keep a job, cant have a lasting relationship, etc etc .

If this drug that was prescribed to my mother is the root of all my ongoing medical problems including vascular malformations in the brain as well as endocrine and reproductive, I want compensation! It's not fair. I have suffered so much physically, mentally and emotionally my entire life and I understand when those also say they wish they were dead as it's what I've felt at many times too. It's not fair!

Re: Anonymous Aussie (# 30) Expand Referenced Message

I agree, but have had to get used to the idea that life is not fair. My wife has a diagnosis of early onset alzheimers that I am sure was brought on by her working lifetime of exposure to hazardous chemicals used in operating theaters. Very hard to prove when the effects are so long removed from the cause. Surround yourself with positive people, and treasure the good times when they happen. Our son who was badly affected by debendox when in the womb, has been a lot more emotionally stable after being prescribed mood stabilisers. Again, cause and effect are hard to establish no matter how certain you are .

Re: Verwon (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

My son is 39 and suffers cyclic depression and all the other complications mentioned. I took Debendox throughout my pregnancy for severe sickness. I have often wondered if my medication had an effect on my child. I have read more and more about it and it confirms my fears. I feel so sad and guilty.

Hi everyone. I now feel im not alone. I took Debendox for my entire pregnancy in 1982. My son , who is now 38 years old , has had problems all his life. He cant hold down a job , cant keep a friend , or relationship . Hes terrible with money and is in huge debt. My life has revolved around trying to support him , bail him out , and try to be there for him when everyone else has fled. He gets angry and abusive (verbally), and has landed himself in trouble , and spent 2 separate periods in prison. This all makes him sound dreadful , however when hes in a happy place , hes lovely, but when things are not going his way , hes horrible, and seems to have no coping mechanism. There is also no learning from his mistakes it seems. I love him unconditionally , and feel its my fault for taking this drug . Im trying to find a way to get the help he so desperately needs , so id appreciate any suggestions from others going throuh the same as me.

Re: Deb (# 16) Expand Referenced Message

Deb, I can completely relate to your post, as you're describing my son. I also took debendox for most of my pregnancy in 1982. My son has all of those traits, and I've been searching for answers all his life. He behaves like a spoilt child sometimes, and is very hard to get along with. He's lost all his friends too, and has spent time in prison. I'd love to hear from others in the same position, as it certainly helps to share our similar experiences and concerns.

Re: kimberley (# 36) Expand Referenced Message

Reading some of the comments is heart breaking. I took Debendox in my pregnancy in 1978 and my son has all of the things other mothers have mentioned here. Was there ever a class action against the manufacturers?

Re: Marion (# 37) Expand Referenced Message

In the United States there were many cases brought against the supplier, but these were lost. The supplier did make an offer of $92 million but didn't accept liability (back then deformities were blamed on the drug, but no one knew about the mental stuff from what I can see) and here in the UK we didn't have the product liability legislation we now have. The (Labour) Government at the time were blocking any such legislation and their Ministers were arguing against suspending sales in Britain, but the supplier did state they wouldn't seek relicensing in 1985 due to the costs and how unprofitable it was for them.

Re: kimberley (# 35) Expand Referenced Message

Hi Kimberly. You have described our son, my wife and I were shocked reading your story and all the other stories on this website, we also now feel we're not alone. Our son was born 1980 now 43 years old, he was born with internal ear problems having to have operations as his hearing is impaired, same as your son's problems all his life. He can’t hold down a job, has few friends. Also, not good with money. Our life has been taken over supporting our son and we still continue this way. Everything you have said we have done and we have supported him financially. He also gets angry and abusive (verbally), he does not see when people are trying to help him. It’s hard to explain his behavior to others and there is no real help out there for our children's problems. It’s an injustice what this drug has done to our families. We constantly wait for the next issue, there is no rest from the constant worry. We love our son dearly and will always be there for him until we are gone, as this is not his fault. He is lost in his mind in a dark world, he does not understand how he should behave with others. He blames everyone else when things are not going his way. I agree our sons do not have a coping mechanism. We have tried to make sense of his condition. He is on anxiety medication, although we are not sure this is helping. We see other son's of other families and ask why us and where we went wrong.
I thank everyone for sharing your stories to know we are not the only parents with a son or daughter that has been affected by this terrible drug.
