Updated

Can taking debendox result in humans developing behavioural disorders that are cyclic in the way they present.my daughter (35yrs old now) can appear quite normal for weeks at a time then she will exhibit borderline pshchotic behaviour then after a few days she will be OK again.

I totally agree with your post. I was sick throughout my pregnancy and I took Debendox for 8 months. My daughter, who is now 39, is loved dearly by me but she is so difficult to be around. It is as if my daughter has never quite grown up. She functions as an adult but there is always that childlike tantrum quality boiling away under the surface. My daughter is being treated for mental problems now and she is sometime suicidal and other times overly confident and ecstatic. Her life cannot be like other women's because her mood swings make it impossible for her to maintain a relationship. Even as a pre school child she acted different to other children preventing her from keeping friends, but I confess that I did not recognise this until years later... always thinking that my little girl was simply very 'different'. The sad thing is that on the outside my daughter looks and acts normally when she is out but on her dark days she hides from the world in her bedroom. It breaks my heart everytime I see her being overly happy to such an extent that she appears unstable and people cannot cope with her moods. There are times when she is just my daughter and she is normal and chatty and can live her life. But most of the time she is either too 'up' or too 'down'. After researching about Debendox I am truly convinced that this drug is what caused my daughters mental instability. She cannot work, she cannot keep a relationship, she voices that she wishes she was dead and the list goes on. I have read some women's posts and they say that their child is normal etc, well good for them! If we all took a massive dose if drugs some of us would live and others would die! Debendox negative results have been brushed under the carpet and the drug company has got away with criminal negligence, they should be brought to justice. No amount of money can make up for the damage which I believe is due to Denendox but at least it might help parents, like me, to be able to help their affected child....and also prevent further drugs from being given out without enough research on that drug.

I took debendox when pregnant with my noiw 33 year old daughter.
She has problems emotionally but is very bright.
I have friends who also took this drug and their children have the same problems.
Its almost like they dont grow up and over react to many things

Everything I've read here is my son exactly. I took debendox when I was pregnant back in 1979 for the full 9 months of pregnancy. My son has mental issues. Is out of control. Has been since age 14. At age 38 he can't seem to get it in his head what he does in his life isn't acceptable. Can't keep a relationship let alone a friendship. Friends come and go from his life because they can't handle his behavior. He's vulnerable. Just doesn't wake up to the fact he's being ripped. Can't work. Can't handle money. One day he'll be a great person, the next he's a raving *****. Immature. Thinks he's the king of all things criminal. But gets caught every time. The list goes on. He's been diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenia.

Absolutely. I always had a saying for my daughter that when she was good she was very very good but when she was bad she was horrid.
I fully believe that debendox caused my daughters problems. Remember too that they took it off the market, if it was safe they would not have done that.

Thats exactly like my daughter. And she cant even cope with being alone, her husband is her full time carer.
Typical of medical companies to just withdraw the product and take no responsibility for the stream of destruction left behind.

Oh my word... I can't believe I finally have an answer to my daughters behaviour. I took debendox for severe morning sickness during 1981 for most of my pregnancy. My daughter does have a job but has the extremes with her mood swings. Massive highs, crashing lows and in her 36th year she still has no settled relationship. She becomes angry and agitated sometimes at the slightest thing and doesn't think out the consequences of what she does or says.

Re: Julie (# 4) Expand Referenced Message

Hi julie and thankyou for your post which has really opened my eyes to the affects of this drug. I took Debendox for most of my pregnancy for severe sickness.prescribed in good faith by my gp. My son was born in 1982 and shortly after, the drug was banned. He was born with ten fingers and toes andcwas perfect in my eyes. However reading your post , i can relate to all of your own experiences with your daughter. My son hss always been difficult , but as he grew and developed, his mental issues have reared its ugly head. He has few or no friends, cant hold down a job, is terrible with money , has no empathy or sympathy, is always the victim , has outbursts of inappropriate anger , cant maintain a relationship , and so the list goes on. I have wondered if he is autistic or bi polar or even psychopathic , but since researching on line , im now convinced that Debendox is to blame. What can we do to help our children ? where do we go from here. ? I would dearly like to hear from others in the same boat . Thankyou .

My daughter has emotional problems and I have always thought it was caused by debendox . I also have a friend whose daughter is the same and she also took debendox. Both girls are very smart but seem to have no ability to control temper when agitated. The slightest thing can cause a deppresive episode.
It has had a huge impact on my daughters life, i wish I had never taken debendox

I'm really amazed (not in a good way) to read all of the messages about Debendox. Our daughter of 40 is suffering exactly in the same way as all of the other offspring mentioned above. She has had problems all through life, and has been diagnosed as autistic just seven years ago. This however this is not the full story. Like others mentioned she is childlike, erratic mentally, can't make decisions, forgetful, aggressive and illogical in her thinking. She started having epileptic fits about 15 years ago and after a MRI brain scan, is found to have a arteriovenous malformation (AVM) on her left frontal lobe, I was told this will have been formed at the fetal stage. Could this be due to the Debendox I took for many months in 1976? Debendox may not be the answer, but there are huge similarities in the cases mentioned and my daughter. I would be interested to hear if any of the other suffers have been diagnosed with a cerebal AVM. Thank you all for sharing your experience, it is somehow comforting not to be alone in this continuous struggle.

Re: Gail (# 18) Expand Referenced Message

My son is now 37 years old. I had to take debendox from about day 1 and throughout the whole of my pregnancy. My son is perfectly normal, bright - he is an engineer- happy, social and extremely well liked by all his friends and dearly loved by his wife and parents. Throughout his life he has always brightened every day of my and my husbands life. So not all stories about debendox are bad as I could not have survived the pregnancy without it.

I'm actually amazed that other mums understand this Debendox problem.. I do know it was banned in the USA.. my poor daughter may have suffered all because of an anti sickness drug.. not only does it affect her but her children too. Are all of you in the UK?

Yes,our son, now 36yrs old shows all the signs and symptoms descibed by others. My wife took Debendox as an alternative to hospital and intravenous drips to treat severe morning sickness for all nine months of her pregnancy. He has difficulties maintaining relationships, suffers severe mood swings, has great difficulty making decisions when faced with choices, agressive illogical thinking. intelligent but very childlike in many ways, can't handle money etc. etc.----. Still dependent on his parents who have severe health issues ( cancer, heart attack, alzheimers between us) and we are desperate to get help before it is too late.
