My girlfriend has an assortment of emotional problems such as bipolor, ocd, borderline personality disorder and agoraphobia. Basically it has her to where she doesn't want to leave the house because she thinks people are staring and judging her. She goes to the psychitrist once a month for her meds which are resperdal, topamax, cogentin and .5mg of klonopin. She's been taking the klonopin for about 3 months and it only works if she takes 4 of them which is the equivlent to 2mg. She is thinking of asking her dr to switch her to 2mg xanax but is deathly afraid to do it. Her shrink isn't one of those dr's thast will just hand out drugs she convienced herself that he will view her as a drug addict instead of an emotional mess seeking relief. Her condition has been documented since she was 11yrs old she is now 27. Can someone please give us their opinion on what to do.

Well, talking to her doctor and being honest is really the only option she has here. If she continues to take 4 of the tablets, at once, she is going to get herself in a rut, by running out early and then having nothing to use.

However, asking for a specific medication, in a specific dosage can make her seem like a drug seeker. The proper way to do it to avoid that would be to just explain the issue to her doctor, without asking him for a different medication or specific dosage. Since he is the doctor, that decision should be left up to him.

In addition, switching to Xanax will not really make a difference, because they are both Benzodiazepines and the dosages are equivalent, a 2mg Xanax will be the same as taking a 2mg Klonopin.

I've been on 2mgs of CLONAZAPAM (Klonipin) for several yrs @ bedtime for sleep disorder(s), anxiety, Migraine prevention. I agree with the third post, in that she needs to begin with a discussion with her Dr. It would not be uncommon for her body to have built a tolerance to. 5 mg dose. It would be better to explain & disuse now, than have her anxiety increase over running out of her med too soon & asking for early refills. That's going to come off as looking like behavior more in line of drug seeking. I deal with Chronic Piano, so I understand the phobia (@ least for me) of being looked @ as a drug seeker. I've gone thru many Drs because of their inability to communicate. This Dr should be able to communicate, especially in his specialty. Does anyone go with her for moral support? If not, the appointment where she chooses to discuss this, would be good. (Maybe don't wait until next appt if it's longer than a 10 office days out) About Xanax, it has a much shorter halflife than CLONAZAPAM (Klonopin). Xanax, from what I can conclude, is used more with short term anxiety dx; but I'm NOT a Dr. In my own experience, I was taken off Xanax & placed on Klonopin because it stays in the system longer. So, where many only take Klonopin (once on correct
dose), 1-2x per day, they'd have to take @ least 4 tablets of equivalent dose per day. So, rather than switch her to Xanax, he may increase her dose of Klonopin if the 2mgs is working for her. Or he may go a completely different direcion. Sounds like she has a great support system in you & that goes a long way. I hope something I said helps. Remember, my words come from having traveled some of these roads, some Healthcare background, BUT by NO means am a physician. Good Luck.

I take 2 mg of Klonopin for anxiety disorder. It is longer acting than Xanax. The down side is it is very difficult to stop taking!!

Xanax is a very serious RX to get off of, & if she were to run out early, the affects could run from acute withdrawls, to DEATH, especially in higher doses ! While xanax I found to be more effective, I'm not getting nearly the same benefits from the same 2mg of klonopin ! However, speaking from personal experience, the acute withdrawls from xanax is beyond horrible, & I would rather stay with the klonop, albeit the symptoms are not addressed ! But from what tour describing as far as,her symptoms, maybe these might be the wrong medications for her ! I cannot suggest any med's, but xanax & the likes are (for me anyways) for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Aghoraphobia(spell ck) clausterphobia, panic/anxiety disorder, ect ! These med's work well for these conditions, & may well work for what you are describing too, in terms feeling more at ease when going out in public, but I get from you an underlying issue that is not being properly addressed, that is why I say these meds may not be appropriate for her 'condition(s)" ! Also, the withdrawls from xanax especially can not only be the worst "mind f*@#", but the chances of death from acute withdrawls, & the higher the dosage, the better the chance of death ! Not to sound redundant, but this is the worst sensation she will most likely ever feel, & coming off of them is extremely difficult at best ! Klonopin is much easier to withdrawl from, this is all from personal experience, & I wouldn't wish that feeling on my worst enemy, (& I hate 1 with a Passion) ! Just be informed, & I wish you both the very best in luck ! Sincerely , * GUNNEY *

I was recently given klonopin to try. I didn't like it although it seemed to address some anxiety. My Doctor said it is much easier to kick, nothing like Xanax. I'm not sure if that's true? I tried two and went back to Xanax! Ativan on the other hand was the worst and I hated it, stopped everything and almost died.

Nice to read such a pos post in re taking mes that work for you - I too take meds that DO work thankfully and no one bothers me about them either which is also nice. I can function and function well and am very grateful to have found the right combination as well as work with a doctor who is not afraid to prescribe what works and not trip on what the combo is whereas other docs absolutely will.

I have been on xanax Since I was 16 years old I have as you say a bunch of emotional problems as well! Anyway I recently stopped taking them for four months and see probably about a month and a half I was having seizures they say you know usually good after 20 days well that's not the case so anyway I went to the doctor and he said to me you know this is something I would have to be on for rest my life and I told him well you know I've been Looking up a lot of things and I decided I want to be on Clonopin it last longer for 12 to 24 hours and it's not really a matter of him hi it's really a matter of it makes you normal to where you need to be if you have the true chemical balance that I have as messed up as others have then it will just take your severe anxiety away and make you be able to do every day things like interact with other people things you know you know. So if I was you and you feels that you're going to feel like a drug addict which you know in my struggle of addiction i finally figure things out and what they need to do is always have that mentality that they seem eveeyone gonna think that their drug addict in actuality as long as you got they it who cares Wht they think bcz ur smart so u go to do. N say u been researching Clonopin's and they last longer than Xanax 12 to 24 hours and now it seems like it might be something that you'd rather be alone then Xanax which were a lot stronger and Waymore that thing because Clonopin's actually I want you to go through Xanax withdrawal and treat you for severe exactly with them as well

Your post was a little hard to read but both Xanax and Klonopin are dosed the same, act the same, and the strength are pretty much the same. They seem interchangeable. However to deny we are a drug user or dependent on a controlled drug would not be accurate.
