i took bactrim for about 5 days (13 total pills) then a severe rash has broken out all over my body and it looks like the measles with a sunburn!!!! i hate this pill, i cant believe my doctor would have gave this to me, knowing it has bad side effects. Now im in misey and there is nothing i can do but drink alot of water and try to flush it from my system, my other doc, gave me benedryl 4 times a day a cortizone shot and percription steroids to try to counter act the itching and rash..this is awful, beware of bactrim, if you get the rash, u cant get comfortable whatever you do.

To Janet (20th post) Some of these postings make you laugh? Are you kidding? I'm in the midst of a SEVERE BACTRIM Reaction. HIgh fevers, headache, lethergy and I am crawling out of my skin with a rash that is head to toe, even on my ears.

I would advise anyone taking this drug to be very careful and well monitered.

People are out there telling their stories to make other people aware of the dangers. COURTESY! Although you may not have experienced the same side effects of others, I think the negative remarks should be kept to yourself.. No need to beat people down when they are already lying down!

Would strongly suggest one look elsewhere when considering antibiotics. Have never been alergic to anything and didn't research drug before taking. Now I research everything before consuming. Was prescribed Bactrim DS for an infected spider bite from UMC quickcare and ended up in having to go the hospital 3 days later covered in hives. Severe swelling and hives over 90% of body, Everywhere except face. Get predisone and an anti itching drug and sent home. Fine, but it has been six months and now I have hive break outs all the time. (never had hives before taking bactrim) Swelling and pain have me up at 4am typing in warnings to avoid this drug. Make sure you do not take aspirin for pain as it makes hives worse. Learnt the hard way. Went to skin doctor and they tell me that much of their business is do to Sulpher reactions. Apparently Bactrim is widely prescribed in the US, (Almost banned in the UK, can look up story on web) and alergic reactions to this drug are apparently very common. There are other antibiotics on the market with less potential for side effects, avoid Bactrim.

I have two staph infections in each breast (I'm breastfeeding my 7 week old infant) and was given a sulfa drug for the infection. This morning (10 days after starting the sulfa) I woke up with a rash head to toe with blood shot eyes and chills, but no fever right now. IT is terrible and so uncomfortable. I went to urgent care and when the doctor came in to see me he actually said "wow, are you taking a sulfa antibiotic by chance?" Obviously I stopped taking this antibiotic, but I'm wondering how long these symptoms will last. And I also wonder if I should stop breastfeeding and pump and throw out milk until the drug is completely out of my system (how long would this take?). My mom is allergic to sulfa drugs, and I must be, so I worry that even the tiny amount that gets to baby through the milk will cause him to have an adverse reaction too. I can't believe how horrible this is and why so many people are prescribed this drug when so many are allergic. It seems to have some pretty bad side effects for a lot of people. When will this get better??

Oran T Says:

I'm having a Bactrim (sulfa) reaction. I had taken the last of 20 pills for a leg infection, it was day 11. The Rx was gotten late on day 1, so I had two 1/2 dose days. The reaction started yesterday. I didn't know that they were giving me a sulfa drug. My grandfather had allergic reactions to it, nearly killed him. I find it hard to believe that anyone (as one poster did) would find it FUNNY that other people are in pain... I guess it takes the misfortune of others to make some sick people happy in their own petty lives. Anyway, I only wish that the doc would have asked if I had tried a sulfa drug before, as this reaction seems pretty common. They ask about penicillin, they don't just prescribe it without a specific warning... why not do the same with Bactrim? Sure, there are reactions to ALL drugs, but this stuff can kill you, and is pretty common, from my research. I know I am fine with Z-pac, penicillin, amoxycillin, several others... I guess the ball is in my court to demand the correct med. Let the patient advise the doctor. Thanks for the internet, Al. And at least I know that I'm allergic to this for sure, now. I just hope I get better. This is bad stuff, and not funny at all.

I just finished my two week prescription for Bactrim to treat a sinus infection... Since I stopped the medication I have been itchy from head to toe but no rash... Is it just a side affect or am I having an allergic reaction?

I took bactrim ds for a brown recluse spider bite that looked infected. This crap literally kicked my butt and almost killed me. On the second day of taking this poison I was too weak to raise my arms and slept for 20 hours straight. My heart rate went way down. I set up in bed and felt dizzy and almost fainted. Needless to say I didn't take any more and am getting back to normal after 2 days off of it. The Dr. didn't say one thing about the possible deadly side effects when he prescribed it. From now on I will treat myself with oil of oregano as my antibiotic. This is God's drug and there are no side effects.

my grandson, 13 yrs. old, was given bactrim for a sinus infection. he had to have the liquid, because he can't swallow pills yet. after 3 doses (1 and 1/2 days), his fever went up , he feels bad generally, and is having trouble sleeping, he's wose now than when he first went to the doctor. if this is a bad reaction to bactrim, how long will it last? i hate seeing him like this. he is no longer taking the bactrim.

I took Bactrim DS for 7 days for a UTI and on the 9th day after starting the drug I broke out with a severe rash. The next day I went to the ER cause it was getting worse. Got a shot of prednisone and a prescription for prednisone to take for 3 days. It is horrible. Covering 90% of my body, itching, and now it is in my face. My back is red like a real bad sunburn. I am also taking benedryl. I hope this goes away soon, miserable.

Rachel Says:

I am a 19-year-old female and I have never been allergic to any medications (only experienced mild side effects of others), so I wasn't concerned when I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. I took Bactrim for 5 days (I was prescribed for 7 days) and each day I felt more and more nausea, horrible headaches, and my digestive system went nuts with diarrhea, until finally it started preventing me from doing my job as an RA at my college dorm. I have been off it for two days now and my stomach is still experiencing severe nausea. I've been taking Maalox and sipping Canada Dry just to prevent myself from throwing up.

I also have an undiagnosed stomach issue that gives me nausea (my doctor thinks it's an ulcer, but I didn't have time to get it tested before leaving for school), so the Bactrim might have piled on top of that. Regardless, I really don't want to ever take this drug again.

It is 9/12 and my 17 year old daughter took 5-1/2 days of a ten day prescription of bactrim for a uti...she had 1 week of fevers which her doctor said was a virus...when i noticed a rash starting on her chest i took her back to md and he said she had beginning signs of allergic reaction..after going to emergency room and getting liquid steroids and benadryl the next day were at er all day with specialists again stating acute severe reaction to bactrim...she is covered head to toe in sunburn rash and having muscle cramps..she has endured extreme uncomfortability and is out of commission for awhile...this did affect her red, white and platelets as well although todays er visit, her blood count was better, thankfully so far her liver, kidneys are ok..why the hell is this drug still on the market???? we have been a nervous wreck and now have to wait for this horrible drug to get out of her bloodstream....CAUTION to anyone who uses this drug!!!

Ginger Says:

Dawn, I agree with you, this drug is dangerous if you are at all allergic to sulfa. I never had a problem with sulfa when I was young, but after this reaction I won't take it again. My dr. and the ER dr. said the next time it could be fatal.
I still have some blotches on my skin from the rash and it's been almost a month that I quit taking it. I hope your daughter is feeling better.
