Neurontin For Diabetic Neuropathy
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have diabetes and neuropathy with severe pain in my hands, feet, and legs. My doctor has prescribed Neurontin for me for the last 2 years and says it will take away the pain I am having. He has also prescribed hydrocodone for the pain. When I am out of hydrocodone the neurontin does not take away any of the pain I am having. But my doctor insists that it will. Should I keep taking it or should I stop. It seems like it does not do anything for me.

Thank You Very Much

There are no medications that work for everyone that tries them, since we are all different. In an ideal world, all doctors would know, and accept that.

I tried Neurontin, as prescribed by my doctor, it did help some of my pain, but caused pain in my feet, and it caused severe acne. I'm almost 50, and never had acne like that, even when I was teen. LOL

I have a severe form of scoliosis, and am developing arthritis. I stopped taking the Gabapentin, recently, and am trying topical NSAIDs, occasional oral NSAIDs, and a joint health supplement. So far, so good..... we shall see how I do for the long term.

Gabapentin may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, mood changes, dry mouth, and weight changes.

As gabyist warned, if you have been taking high doses, or taking it for a long time, it isn't safe to stop taking it abruptly, due to the risk of seizures.

How are you doing, now?

Hi Domald Burks,
how much do you take a day? This is important as long term use of gabapentin can be difficult to stop taking especially at higher doses. You are diabetic, are you on a magnesium restricted diet? If not you could supplement your diet with magnesium rich foods or take a magnesium supplement.

If you should decide to stop the gabapentin as it doesn't seem to be helping with the pain, magnesium may ease the withdrawal if any and please don't stop taking gabapentin cold turkey. You should taper about 10% per month stabalize with no withdrawal symptoms and then taper an other 10% for the next month, and you may still experience withdrawal.

I was on gabapentin for over 10 yeas at 2400 mg to 3000 mg at bedtime and I thought I would never get off of the gabapentin because of the withdrawal.

In fact untill I started taking a magnesium supplement I was unable to stop taking the gabapentin because of the withdrawal. Not only that but with the magnesium supplement my teeth stoped hurting my nesk aches stoped, pain from nerve damage in my lower back was reduces and if your diebetes is type 2 it may help with your diabetes.

Do some research on magnesium, a good website with good information about magnesium and gabapentin withdrawal ( it doesn't hurt to be prepared) is survivingantidepressants.org

I watch this forum every day so I here for if you need advise.

Good Luck
