Long Term Doxy Use For Mrsa - Chest Tightness & Nervousness

Updated

Hi,
I have been taking doxycycline for about a year to fight back chronic MRSA Staph infection in the femur (had several operations on leg so far). I am alergic to some other antibiotics and tried Septra and that gave me rashes. So I am kind of stuck with Doxy.

A few months after I started taking Doxy I started developing what I thought at the time was general anxiety disorder as I would develop chest tightness/pressure and general nervousness which in turn would make it extremely difficult to concentrate at work and hard to hold up conversations with people. Sure I have some anxiety over bills, work, life, but nothing that I obsessively worry about. However, thinking my issue was anxiety I started taking anti-anxiety meds (BuSpar and Ativan) - I got off the Ativan about 3 weeks ago as I learned about some of the long term problems with that drug.

My chest tightness seems to subside when I stop taking the Doxy for several days, and returns after about 3-5 days back into taking the Doxy. So I am wondering if the Doxy is the root cause of this physical anxiety/chest tightness sensation I am having or do I just really have general anxiety disorder? I try to do cognitive positive self-talk but again, there isn't too much mentally I am worrying about except this horrible constant burning/tightness/pressure in the chest area...

any feedback would be greatly appreciated,
tommy

Doxycycline is a tetracycline class antibiotic.

However, no, those types of symptoms are not listed as common or even rare side effects, with long-term use.

In this case, it is hard to say what might be causing it, because it could be problems from the infection itself and/or worrying about it and all the treatments you have already been through.

I've been taking doxy for the past 2 weeks or so, and I just got the chest pressure this morning. I've never felt it before, and it's absolutely terrible. I have a feeling that this should be added as a side effect so people are aware.

This drug has the most awful side effects and I already suffer from panic attacks as it is. How surprised was I to suffer an anxiety/panic attack whilst I had already FINISHED taking these things.

From my understanding you are liable to experience panic/anxiety attacks from this medication just as you will get pins and needles in the arms and hands and heartburn or at least that's my understanding of it.

The so called "rare" and "extremely rare" side effects seem to actually be extremely common. If you are worried about this medication then see your GP, personally I think this medication should be banned but that is just my opinion, again speak to your GP if you are concerned.
