I'm Confused On "abuse Deterrence"

Updated

I have a older sister who has been the worst addict with pretty much everything. She just about killed herself in a car accident due to being high on Marijuana and drunk on whiskey. Well we got her help, supported her. Now we have recently discovered she is abusing pain medication. She's already had 2 Dr's drop her due to taking a month's supply in a week. Now my elderly mother is having to drive her to a Dr over 2 hours away to someone who hasn't heard of her or this addiction. Last week she got month supply of Norco 5/325 AND now he's added a months worth of percocet 10 (oxycontin er 10mg). She got them less than 10 days ago and she was crying, begging me for some of my pain medication. I have cancer and I'm recovering from a surgery as well. I refuse to enable her so I told her "no" and I also told her not to ask me again. Well she was asking me if I heard of this hysingla er and she said that she heard that it was a great pain medication. As I was researching it I kept hearing that phrase "abuse deterrence" with this medication. Can u please describe IN DETAIL WHY IT IS CONSIDERED "ABUSE DETERRENCE" ???? I don't understand what kind of pill this is that it can be considered that. Also, in ur opinion, with her addictive past, is this a safe one to take and if so, why? Thank you so much for your time.

Hello, Anjanette! How are you doing? I am very sorry about the issues with your sister.

The abuser deterrent feature refers to the manufacturer, Purdue Pharma's patented prevention method. They discovered a gel like substance that is used to control the time released mechanism of such medications. It prevents people from being able to crush the pills or break them to defeat the time release action, if someone tries, they are just left with a lump of goo that will still maintain its time released properties. Once the pill is swallowed, the substance slowly breaks down due to the effects of stomach acid. They did something very similar with Oxycontin a few years ago.

However, it is not going to prevent someone from still taking multiple tablets, at once.

Hyslinga ER contains the active ingredient Hydrocodone, it is the same medication as what's in Norco, but without the Acetaminophen and, of course, being time released.

It might be better if she were on Suboxone, which is used to treat addiction, as well as severe pain. It contains Buprenorphine, which is an opiate, coupled with Naloxone that blocks other opiates from having any effect, while someone is taking it. It also doesn't usually cause the high that most abusers seek.

However, the FDA does warn that since Buprenorphine is an opiate, it still carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause similar side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
