I am 49. I have been taking 25 mg amitriptyline since I was 12. I have not had any symptoms of any kind. I have espastic colon and severe migraines. This medication works wonders for these types of problems. But these types of issues run in my family. So it affects everyone differently. Instead of taking them everyday cut them down to 1 every other day. That works! My dr wants me to take 4-7 per nite. I can't do that and I refuse to because I am not going to be a walking zombie. I take it only as needed. You are the only ones that know how you feel. You have to experiment with this medication to see what works for you. To me it's not addictive. Listen to what your tells you on how you feel while this medication daily or if you need to cut down to every other day or 1 every 3 days or 1 every 4 days.

Kim, 100 mg-175 mg a night is a wide range. Are you sure that your dr said he wanted you to take 4-7 25 mg amitriptyline (elavil) at night ? If you take 175 mg some night sand 100 mgs other nights, the 75 mg difference will more than likely affect your ability to be alert the next day.

Never had any blood work done for taking ammo's in my life. They look at you blood if your on Lithium. I have stopped taking them in previous times of my life had no side effects except not being able to sleep. Anyway if you suffer with depression this tri-cyclic works. Main use anti-depressant but it it paart hypnotic, sedative, anti-depressant that actually works, less side effect than the new ones. I take 2 different types on anti-......and I do my outreach work and have a more emphathic approach beccause living on the streets I can understand why they want oblivion and the like ammo's and now pre-gab. They are there sadly. I have a lot of experience with drugs and turned it round and help others tackle those issues in they want to. The reason I am saying this is because we all have a place to live and a bedroon to stay in bed if bad, Imagine not having a home and depression.

Val, it is not addicted like an opiate is. But, if you are taking it for pain or to help you sleep, chances are your pain will increase an you will have problems sleeping.

Yes I'm currently experiencing a heart rate at sleep of 132 per minutes, massive head paid and major swelling in my knee and ankles. I'm reducing currently but that not an over night process.

Yes, I know about large doses of Amitriptylline over a long period of time. I started taking it 30 years ago after the death of my 22 yo brother unexpectedly-- by large size I mean 350 ng over the bulk of 6 years. I continued taking it after that time until recently. I took I in one single dose along w 50 mg Trazadone and 1-1/5 mg xanax. I was also taking Buspar for anxiety in the daytime and 200 ng of Zoloft for 7 yrs of mentally abusive treatment. I have stopped all of them except Zoloft which I want to be off of in 6 mos. In place for sleep I am taking only Restoril and I believe this will work. After getting off all of them, I experienced 7 nights of total lack of sleep. I was like a zombie-- then srmtarted Restoril. I have stopped alcohol and sugar and have become like a guard dog as to what I will let into my brain. What I have realized that for 30 yrs I was functioning while asleep. GET off all large doses of brain meds.

Do whatever you can to get off Amitriptylline.
I was on large doses for 30 years for severe insomnia, and combined w other sleep meds, it was destroying my life. There is too much to my case to write here but GET OFF.

I seems obvious that long term use, over 5 years at doses over 75mg, is not advisable. On the flip side, it appears that short term use , under 75mg seems to produce favorable results.

Does this sound correct?

Hi, I was wondering if any long time users of Endep have Idiopathic Pulmonary fibrosis? I have been diagnosed with this dreaded disease and I have Never Smoked. The only thing I can think of is that I have been taking Endep for approx. 20 years.

I have been on this med for years and have suffered all your symptoms including enamel degradation. I'm on 40mg a day for severe neck and back pain. My pulses races and have now started with high blood pressure as well. I'm so worried about being on it but also scared of what the pain would be like without it. Does anyone know of other good meds to stop muscle spasms? I'd appreciate your help xxx

I was on Elavil for 7 years when I didn't want to be on it anymore I weaned myself off of it very slowly I went to half a pill then a quarter of a pill then an eighth of the pill then I literally crushed it into small tiny pieces even to a powder...believe it or not i still felt the effects of the pill even in the tinyest doses and i did this over the course of several months.. you have to take your time to get your body used to less dosage depending on how many mgs you are taking.. it will work you just have to be patient I have fibromyalgia if it worked for me it's got to work for anybody because nothing works for me.. Just cut down as slow as you need to for your body to feel ok..once I stopped I felt better... good luck!

I have had close to 26 years of Amitrip at dosages of 150, maybe more. I gained 150 pounds. It does make one sleep. I have restarted Amitrip with Fluoxetine and I take 80 mgs of Fluoxetine and I'm sleeping better but feel awful. No get up and go. Oh, i restarted Plavix for stroke. Really hate plavix; Can't sleepl at all without amitrip and Fluoxetine

I was taking 200 mg of elavil for less than a year as a migraine preventative and I am convinced it brought on super ventricular tacichardia I had 3 spells within a 2 month period where I ended up in emergency and needed medicine given through IV to bring down the heart rate, because this had never happened before in my life and research suggests it can be a side effect. I believe in my case that it was.

I have been on a low dose for 22 years and haven't had any issues. I was starting to think being in this for this long wasn't good. I take it for FMS
