My grandson and I have been taking cheratussin ac this past week also and we can't sleep with it either. I have never been able to sleep if I take any kind of narcotic though, I have the reverse, I get hyped up, so I quit taking it and went back to the dollar store dextromathore (sp) stuff, it does work for me.

I was just prescribed Cheritussin also for influenza and bronchitis. Wonderful with controlling my cough, no stomach or back issues . . . but it gave me insomnia. Tossed and turned two nights in a row now. Very strange side effect considering it's main ingredient is an opiate . . . oh well, it was worth it. Bronchial tubes feel better.

I am just beginning Cheratussin AC today and at 1tsp, I thought the pharmacist got it wrong....I am not only still awake (wide awake) at 10 of 3 in the morning, but hacking and coughing my way through night number 6 with Bronchitis...really bummed out, because I was told it would help me get some much needed sleep and a break from my cough which has been horrendous--I actually threw out my back from the coughing jags and was given percocet and valium for that--frankly, I slept better with that and the valium relaxed my cough a bit--I wish I hadn't taken the syrup tonight, then I would just go back to the P&V...I think I might dbl up my dose on the Ch. AC and see if that brings any relief and if not, I will just suck it up with Nyquil! Any advice or commiserating welcome! Hope all are feeling better soon!

I was prescribed Cheratussin AC today. I took the first dose w/ no problem (2 tsp). About 30 min. after taking the 2nd dose @ 10:00 pm, I started having what 1st felt like chest pains. Then it felt like chest and stomach. I was about to go to the emergency room, but I called the pharmacist (no help) andstarted researching online first. I'm glad I did. After reading posts here and other places I realize my dose is probably too high and I should have taken w/ food. After eating a few crackers and drinking tea, I feel much better. I'm a little pissed because the instructions said nothing about taking it w/ food or water. I have now learned that it should be taken w/ plenty of water and food. Hope that helps anyone experiencing pain. As for me, I'm done w/ it. I'll just deal w/ the cough!

codeine is not a cousin of cocaine, it is the base form of hydrocodone and oxycodone, all opiates.

I have severe allergies & asthma. I was prescribed Cheratussin AC when I got bronchitis. With everything blooming, I have been wheezing & my chest is a little tight,my Albuteral not really helping. I was so sick of coughing I took my cough syrup & it totally helped my wheezing & coughing!! Also it cleared up my nasal congestion.

It has Codeine, a heavy narcotic. It's similar to opium or oxy. That's what they look for in drug panels. Narcotics, amphetamines thc, and other things.

I have cough, cold, fever and body aches with bronchitis 2 weeks ago.. I was prescribed Azithromycin 250 mg and Cheratussin ac syrup for cough to help me sleep. I took 10 ml prior to sleep for 3 consecutive nights with midnight snacks. So smooth, slept like a baby... no hang over. Medicine only gives temporary relief. Sleep heals the body..

I just was diagnosed with Swine Flu, with pneumonia complications...was prescribed the tussionex.....too expensive for me; and the government would not help me pay for it....I now have cheratussinAC Syrup, and have become quite concerned after reading all of the other readers comments....don't want to take something that is going to make me feel worse; but I am 54 years young; and wanting to get better for various reasons...mainly the 'angel babies'....my grandchildren.........Any input someone could give me would be appreciated!!!!

-correction they both contain a narcotic. cheratussin has codeine and tussionex hydrocodone....everyone responds differently, i still get icky w both but they work to a point..but if u keep coughing, ppl have to cough..it is the lungs trying to expell the mucus..it should give relief but not eliminate the coughin in some cases..mine worked, and then after not taking it my cough was worse! but thankfully, the cheratussin had helped loosen the phlegm..

My pediatrician has prescribed Cheratussin AC for my daughter, who has a tendency to get very bad and persistent coughs, since she was probably as young as five or six (she is eight now). He is a very careful doctor and would not give her something that wasn't safe and necessary. That being said, you must follow the dosing directions, and you should only use it for brief periods of severe coughs. I find that it almost always (unless she has pneumonia) helps her within about an hour to fall asleep and not cough for four to six hours, which is a huge improvement over the non-stop, all night, coughing she does otherwise. And she can have a second dose after six hours anyway. I asked why she wasn't given Tussionex, which I have and which is more effective, but I was told that Cheratussin AC is safer for children.

Umm people do your homework. Codeine is an opiate but it is very different than heroin and COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than cocaine or crack cocaine, which test completely different because they are not opiates. Pain relievers are opiates... Heroin, dilaudid, morphine, Percocet, Vicodin, etc. cocaine is in its own class of drugs and is NOTHING like an opiate. Cocaine is closer to meth and all amphetamines, but still comes up differently on a test.

the reason why you popped positive is bc those drug tests test for opiates..that cough medicine has codeine, an opiate...they test for opiates a group of drugs that cocaine, heroin, crack etc belong too, but if you have a certain amount of a medication in your system that is a derived..that is an opiate like morphine or in this case codeine, simply show proof it is YOUR prescription. because some ppl also use this highly addictive drugs illegally via other means..u should be fine..it is a hit or miss..i remember taking a pain reliever also containing an opiate, but i still tested negative. From then on, i always avoid taking anything a few days before..

Linda,

Tussionex is a stronger cough supressant is often considered the miracle drug. I've had it before (thankfully my insurance covered it) and I kid you not, my cough of 3+ weeks was completely gone inside of 2-3 doses. It is very expensive, but it feels like a life saver. I was just diagnosed with bronchitis and croup this past week and have maxed out the dosage of the cheratussin and found NO relief. I convinced my doctor to let me try the tussionex, and after one dose, I already feel some relief. My cough is still present, but it is not nearly as hard nor does it last as long per each coughing spell. Ask you doctor for the 3oz dose (the smallest they dispense) and it runs about $50 without insurance. I promise you it will be the best $50 you ever spend when you can finally find relief from your cough and get your life back! Hope you get to feeling better soon!

cheratussin has both the cough suppressant and an expectorant. tussionex, is only a cough suppressant. they both contain codeine. honestly it triggers my headaches and nausea (bc of codeine) but it does shut u up..the reason why cheratussin in a way is better, it loosens up phlegm..ppl especially w asthma..bronchitis etc suppressants shuts u up, but it does nothing to get rid of the phlegm which u have to..tussionex tastes a heck of a lot better...but w cheratussin u get both..it calms ur cough but loosens up mucus.

Would request the Phenergan w/codeine rather than Cheratussin. Most Dr's wont have a problem if you have a bad cough and cant sleep. The phenergan is an anti-histamine used typically for nausea but also a sedative to help sleep. Double check but Cheratussin has 10mg codeine/tsp and Guafenesin 100mg/tsp a expectorant- loosen mucous to make cough more productive.

This drug pops up as a pure opiate on a drug panel because it has codeine in it.

I'm no authority on the subject, but I would think you would be flirting with danger to do so. Check with your pharmacist!
