I have been on this drug for a week now and I have been experiencing a hard time sleeping and I wake up every hour on the hour and when I first was on it I did not sleep for four days and I never had sleeping problems before. When I do sleep I also get really weird dreams. Has anyone experienced this?

This medication is a combination of two antibiotics, and yes, they will cause sleep problems for some people, but this will wear off if you are on it for awhile, or it you complete your course of treatment.

I have some Sulfameth/Trim DS tablets dated 03/07. They were prescribed for sinus problems. I see no expiration date on the bottle. Are they still safe to take for my present sinus condition?

No, you should never take any medication that is over 12 months old. Time can change the chemical composition of most medications. Try contacting the doctor that prescribed the med or the pharmacy that filled it, they can answer your questions too.

I had an allergic reaction to a pain killer before( prescribed) and since I worry with new medication. My doctor prescribed Bactrim DS for a boil/skin infection and I am terrified to take it after reading the reviews. How common is an serious to fatal reaction with this drug?

I am so glad to have found this forum. I was wondering what was wrong with me. I am so awake on this stuff. I hate it. I can't sleep but its not like a caffeine I have energy I can't sleep kind of thing. It's like my mind is awake and I don't know how to calm it down. Strange random dreams like almost half awake like hallucinations and then strange dreams that make no sense. This does not seem ok. I don't know if I can finish this stuff.

I'm having the same issue as well. Sleep is jacked up. Not comfortable or restful. Crazy violent type dreams. My head feels weird, I'm very anxious. It's crazy how these anti-biotics can cause so many cognitive side effects

I hate this antiob. Day 6 - again no sleep at night. Weird dreams. I woke up all hot and panicky and on top of that laid on my arm wrong so I was tingly. Weird thing was kinda matched my odd dream.
I'm done taking it. I was on it for uti. I'm allergic to cipro.
I also has flu like symptoms day 2- now. Headache, nauseated and zero energy. Slept 4 days straight, or tried. Lots naps. I'll never take this again.

omg, this is the worst antibiotic ever regarding not being able to sleep. i haven't slept for 3 days now since i've been on it. only have 2 more days of taking it so i will just deal with it. i also experienced being nauseous as well, but that is the extent of the side effects for me. i feel for anyone & everone who has been prescribed this antibiotic.

I used Bactrim for 10 days and didn't have any side affects. Just stay way from any alcohol, it will make you sick to your stomach.

I can really relate. I have been having the same sleeping issues and hallucinations. I thought my walls were gone last night at one point. I continually woke up about every hour either laughing or talking to myself I guess. I think I have something in my hand then it's gone.
It's quite freaky and I am so ready to be done with this med in 2 weeks.

I too have had extreme sleep deprivation while taking this medicine. In the past 96 hours after starting 2 pills a day for a staph infection, I could not have slept no more than 8 hours max. Last night I didn't sleep at all. It was strange. I felt like I could possibly be tired enough to lay down, but when I do lay down I feel like my mind is completely full of energy and I cannot seem to get it to drift off to sleep. I feel like I have been taking some serious uppers. I'm afraid to stop taking them as I don't want the strep to rebound or worsen but I'm also afraid to take them as it feels like each one will deny me sleep for another half day.

I sure am glad I found this site as I too have not been really able to sleep for 3 days, and I only took 2 Doses for 1 day 4 days ago! Have any of you recovered from this insomnia? If you have please fill me in on about how long to expect this terrible side effect. Thanks for any responses.

I posted a note here back in December when I was still taking the stuff. The good news is that the insomnia stopped after I finished the medicine. However, unfortunately, my ears started ringing on the last day of the drug. This subsided a little bit within a few days after stopping the medicine, but it has not completely gone away after two months. I'm still hopeful that this might go away given time (and it almost disappeared for about a week in January... though it returned), because I have normal hearing and my ears are quite healthy, but medical science has no answers for tinnitus. It seems to be too complicated for them to handle with the available tools. It might go away in an hour, a week, a year, or never. The only meager consolation is that, well, it's not life threatening.

I don't know what alternative medicine I could have used for the infection, but I wish I had been more persistent. More recently, my wife took a 3-day round of Bactrim for an infection and it gave her a horrible migraine that she had to get a shot from the doctor to help clear up. (I would rather have had that than tinnitus. At least there was some cure.) Anyway, this drug, or at least the standard dosage, is overkill in my opinion.

9 months after taking 2 pills of Bactrim DS generic my sleep is still pretty jacked up. Don't get me wrong, I'm sleeping and I'm not losing my mind anymore but this was a hell of a process to get through. I believe that I will continue healing from here, but my prayers are with any of you who are having severe reactions to this med. I don't really have a ton of advice except to believe in yourself to get healthy and don't get mixed up with other drugs to help you get through. I think other drugs may cause other problems or worsen the sleep you are already getting. May God send you all healing, anything is possible.
