I just had major surgery on my leg and have lots of pain. I was wondering if taking two 5 / 325 Percocet every four hours for pain is safe? Please let me know asap :/ ## You should not increase your dosage, without your doctor's approval. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. That's not what would be considered a dangerous dose, but it may be too much for some people that aren't opiate tolerant. Is there anything else I can help with?

Have kidney stone and was prescribed Hydro/Apap 5-325. Says to take 1 tablet every six hours. Took half a tablet four hours ago because a whole tablet was making me sick and dizzy. Can you take Percocet 5/325 one every two hours rather than two every four hours so the pain relief stays consistent? Had surgery two days ago. ## Hello, Joesphine! How are you? I don't see why there should be a problem, but you should double check with your doctor or pharmacist to be certain. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Hey Joe, hope u r feeling better. Be careful on the Tylenol in that. It's 325mg per pill & u cannot exceed 4000 mg in a 24 hour period. My mother is 74 yrs old. Had rotator cuff surgery 4 days ago. Had to take her to the ER on day two. There they gave her an IM Dilaudid shot and sent her home. Called the doctor on call the next day and ask if they could admit her for pain management, he proceeded to tell me that the insurance would not pay for it. Post-op surgery they gave her Percocet 7.5/325 1-2 every 4-6 hours for pain. To make a long story short. Two was too strong so she had the 5-325 and took two every four hours and that would help her pain level which would be tolerable at 5. This is 3900mg of tylenol. Too much in only 24 hours. So this is why I am asking if you can take the Percocet 7.5/325 every 3 hours? ## Hello, Debbie! How is your mom doing? Since this is a narcotic, the FDA warns that it carries the risk o...

I have melanoma cancer and a horrific case of shingles. I have been prescribed oxycodone 10/325 1 every four hours. In addition I am treated at the spine and pain center for spinal stenous and osteoporosis. I need to try same dosage every three hours to control my pain because I really struggle that fourth hour with lots of pain. Would that cause a problem? I am male in my middle 70's. ## It would be best not to adjust your dosage, without your doctor's approval. It could create the risk of overdose and/or you may run out early, which may make your doctor think you have an addiction problem, so they might stop prescribing. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness,...

Have nerve pain from l4 l5 surgery. Year ago. Nothing helps am taking two NAproxens ok every four hours ## Hello, Millie! How are you? The 220mg tablets? If so, you may be exceeding the maximum safe daily dosage. That could create a risk of liver damage or failure, since this is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory. Is your doctor aware that you're taking that many each day? Are you on any other medications?

I haven't had a dose for 6 hours. I have 3 left ..what shouldI do? ## You should continue taking it every 6 hours, but also contact your doctor to see if they want to prescribed more for you. If it's prescribed every four hours, how many times a day is it? ## If you take a dose first thing in the morning and then factor in 8 hours of sleep, that's 5 times in a day. Though technically every 4 hours covers 6 times in a 24 hour period. Using a simplified example: 8 am - wake up, take a dose 12 pm - take 2nd dose 4 pm - take 3rd dose 8 pm - take 4th dose 12 am - take 5th dose, go to sleep sleep until 8 am next day Of course the above is oversimplified. If you aren't sleeping through the night you might need a sixth dose in a 24 hour period. Something to work out with your doc. ## How many tablets are prescribed for how many days ? Every 4 hours in a 24 hour period is usually for those that just had surgery. All others that say every 4 hours usually means 4 times in a...

My mom had knee replacement surgery five days ago and is now home and managing her own medication. Her prescription directs her to take 2 percocet every 4-6 hours. She finds that taking two at a time makes her sick to her stomach. But she can't quite make it a full four hours if she takes just one. Is it safe for her to take one pill every 2-3 hours instead of the 2 pills every four hours? ## That should be fine, unless her doctor says otherwise, it really amounts to almost the same dosing, just staggering them. The area of concern would be if she was taking more than prescribed during any given time period. The FDA warns that this medication carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and constipation. Another i...

I am 80 years old and use oxycodone very sparingly for neuropathy. To help prevent possible dependency I usually take one 5mg oxycodone about four hours apart. I weigh 210 pounds and my prescription allows two 5mg pills every six hours, but that dose clouds my thinking even though it does manage pain better. I usually get by with taking one 5mg oxycodone pill no more than three times each day beginning from about 10am. Getting up each morning is the most difficult; If I take two 325mg Butalbital tablets upon arising I seem to get a little boost, so that I can function enough to get going without too much discomfort. I don't start taking Oxycodone until after breakfast, at least two to three hours after getting up. Only on a rare occasion, where I must be very active through the day ...

Hey. I just had surgery (tonsils burned & removed) and the dr prescribed me Acetaminophen with Codeine in it. I've been instructed to take 15mL every four hours as needed. Is that 4 times a day? ## Hi Brittany, 4 goes into 24 hours (1 day) six times. This means that "every 4 hours" translates to 6 times a day. However, "as needed" means that you don't necessarily have to abide by that regimen if you don't feel the need to take it as often. Here's an example of how you could space it out evenly over a waking day, assuming you are awake from 6am to 10pm: 6 am (right after waking up) 10 am (mid-morning) 2 pm (early afternoon) 6 pm (evening/dinner time) 10 pm (shortly before going to bed) If you have any other questions concerning an appropriate dosing pr...

Can I take 1 tablet more often, i.e., every four hours? ## Have you consulted your doctor, or the neurosurgeon? I recently had surgery on my throat and am experiencing extreme pain. I was prescribed Oxycodone 5mg, and told to take half a pill every four hours. However they only gave me enough for 5 days and I don't see this being enough for my recovery. Also, the Oxycodone alone doesn't really entirely do the job. Can I take non prescription acetaminophen along with my Oxycodone? I only have 500 mg tablets, so if I can what should the dosage be along with 1/2 a tablet of the 5mg Oxycodone?? ## Yes, if your doctor approves, you can take Acetaminophen with it, it does augment the action of opiates for some people.
