Suboxone And Pre Employment Drug Screen

Updated

I am prescribed suboxone for an opiate addiction maintenance program. First, will it show up in a ten panel test? Second, can an employer discriminate if they have already offered me the job? Third, is this violating any privacy laws?

Yes, Suboxone contains the narcotic Buprenorphine, so it will show up on a test.

No, they cannot discriminate, that is illegal.

And no, it does not violate any privacy laws. You do not have to discuss with them why you are on it.

You just need to inform them that you are on it, when you go in to have the test. They have the right to verify that it is being used under a doctor's orders and it will, more than likely, negate that part of the drug screen test.

Are there any questions or comments?

thank you for replying, it has been a week since I did take the test.I told the people at (quest) the place where i got my screen, they replied by telling me that they used to ask whoever is taking the test to verify any prescripts that you are on. However this time they did not. When I volunteered to let them know they replied that they do not need to know up front. They did say that they appreciated the honesty, however i didnt need to advise them of that.
Anyway, I started my first day on the job yesterday. No issue ever came up about it. As far as I know it they didnt test for it. I know i have it in my system because ive been on it for months now. OH well, i do appreciate your response even though it didnt turn out like you said. however good luck to all the people who are fighting the struggle with addiction. Wheter you choose to take suboxone, subutex, or methadone, or perhaps just doing a 12 step. whatever you do please stick to it and ghange your life. god bless

I was drugtested every week for nine months and suboxen never came up in my system. One time my dr's office mixed my urine up with someone else and said I had opiates in my system. They retested me on the spot and my test came up negative for opiates. I was on suboxen (1 tablet a day) during my whole pregnancy. Social services at the hospital even tested me and my son when he was born, and we came up clean as a whistle. They never found out and luckily my son was perfect and had no withdraw or complications from the drug. God looked out for me. I was on eight 30mg percocets a day when I found out I was pregnant. I immediately stopped and started buying suboxens on the street the whole pregnancy. the only thing is that it took extra strong dosage of meds in the epidural and in my c-section because of the opiate blocker and I felt alot of my c-section so they eventually knocked me out cold, but they never dtected why and that I was on subs.

I am prescribed suboxone and have taken numerous drug screens for my employment and none have ever tested for suboxone.

Trust me you don't have anything to worry about.

okay, people suboxone DOES NOT show up in a drug screen especially a urine drug screen been on it 5 years and not once has it ever shown up on a drug screen, you can tell them you are on it all you want, but it does not show up as an opiate! it does not! They have to do a special test to check for bup, So please people know what you are talking about before you post things having people all worked up on lack of knowledge. this is wrong if you dont know what you are talking about please do some research, for the guy whom was nervous over his urine screen , he had nothing to worry about it never shown up im positive of that fact

look you this forum should be about truth, first and for most iv been on this medication 5 years , it does not show up in any drug screens unless, ur prescribing suboxone doctor wants to check and they do! As far as job seeking and employment if you dont wanna say you are on this medication by all means dont . Because a lot of people and i mean most people look at you like you are a kunkie as soon as you say the word subutex, suboxone, methadone how ever does showup in drug screens 10 panel 5 panel whatever, but these 2 suboxone and subutex, I know for a fact that it does not! my ob called dss on me all because i had no trace of opiates in my systom, i was up front and i own my addiction. I am not the kind to lie and hide my disease, because its a disease addiction is a disease! so it should be treated as one , most look down upon us, anyways the doctor had to be educated even! he had to right his wrongs he thought like most think that its a form of methadone and thats NOT true, and does not show up in a drug screen, there are enough people saying the same exact thing, so be educated get educated, and own it. Once an addict always an addict, i own that , i will be the first to help or support someone who is in need and needs that hand to be brought back to their feet and id never post something if i did not know for a fact, thanks

The exception is probation. probation instant s now have a slot for suboxin. this is a fact because I have been on for 3 month probation officer. then one day he texted me and asked me how long I have been taking suboxone like he had me on something. luckily I have my prescription with me and he was very pissed off. but there was nothing he could do how about it. so yes they do have instant test for them. But not for employment.

Why do people insist on saying subutex/suboxone tests positive for opiates. Its not a true opiate. Its synthetic. I test monthly for opiates for my sub clinic and never once have I tested positive for opiates.

Verwon, this is NOT entirely true. I have taken ten panel tests for employment and was never given a suboxone screen. And PLEASE stop telling everyone they will test positive for opiates, that is FALSE.

Also, some employers CAN ask you to either stop taking suboxone or find employment elsewhere.

Suboxone has side effects, and people in certain positions can not be under the influence of ANYTHING for safety reasons.

If he was applying to a position that required DOT physical screening, yes they will test for bupe and if found you will be given the alternative above.
As well with any other position that will put yours, coworkers and public safety at risk. Making the company liable!

Please stop providing false information to people. ..

Wrong. Suboxone does not come up on. A standard test. Now my job, due to a issue 2yrs ago, state they test for suboxone. Im on it. And xanax bars. Im tested bimonthly, just to make sure im taking prescribed meds and no opiates. I also have my cdl a, and during my dot physical, i was fine. On subs. If i was on methadone ida tested positive for opiates. But after test for job, they scanned my subs and xanax prescription bottles, my job got negative results

I've worked for CDL required companies for years and yes now if you are on suboxone you're required to either not take it or on required time off take it a certain amount of time before your on duty time. Just like any other medication with altering side effects. I've done log work, federal dot motor carrier safety regulation requirement training and hiring/ supervising for two different companies since I was seventeen. If you in particular are getting away with it for NOW, good luck when your physical comes up again or you're randomed. You can lose your license for not honestly disclosing your prescription to this, for good reason. YOU KNOW HOW MANY LIVES ARE IN YOUR HAND WHEN BEHIND THE WHEEL.

Re: LauraKnowsThings (# 102) Expand Referenced Message

Laura knows things is DEAD WRONG!! That's the ignorant thinking that I was told and I am telling you she is dead wrong..YES it is that...They are testing for this derivative of OPIOIDS!!! She needs to get informed. I am trying to tell you people I have been on the phone today to make sure with FMCSA! IT IS TOTALLY LEGAL!! They can test you for it and the employer has a right to have a drug free employee. Get it through your heads! Stop sticking your heads in the sand! You're going to have to deal with your pain in another way if you want to work in these environments and I mean CDL's, Industrial Jobs and most common professional jobs. Pretty soon they will all be doing this drug testing because its cheap and easy to get hold of these test kits. WAKE UP!! A lot of places are already onboard with hair testing too!!

Re: Crystal (# 104) Expand Referenced Message

Crystal, I did a lot of searching online about all of these new tests. Listen, they are testing for not only the drug itself. They are testing for derivatives. In other words for other components which make up the drug that you take. Listen its getting mean out there. Employers simply do not want their employees on any kinds of medicines unless it's for diabetes, heart or something like that. Pain control is like a stigma now because people get addicted to feeling good or better. They want you to be drug free period!! Things are changing and I promise you before its over with they will be testing for anything that's in your system..It's truly ridiculous. Just try to get clean girl like me. I know its hard but I refuse to let them win!

Ok I am going to clear up so much he said she said..Ok first of all when you to a regular job they are not going to test for suboxone..#2..If you are going to work in an industrial environment or dot is involved, I am letting everybody know right now, they do have the so called "Special" test for suboxone... Let me tell what I went through yesterday. I went to take a physical in baton rouge, la. I was trying to get on with a company that was offering employment at the plant. I'm not going to say names. Anyway this is what happened to me. The freaking doctor was such an a**hole. I mean to tell you I have never been treated like this in my life!! He said to me that the drug companies lie and so do the doctors giving out the medication "Suboxone". This a**hole told me that it is an opiate and that opiates are in my system! He also gave me and wrote on my paper a "Restriction" not allowing me to use heavy machinery and I could not use the man lift for 90 days! I was so pissed not only did I not go to work, the office treated me like dog! They were upset because they actually do know that something is up with your drug test. These people are squirrelly sons of you know whats..I think there should be privacy in this medicine and there is not!! They wonder why there is an epidemic because the doctors are writing the scripts then when you want to get clean you gotta choose between your job and this medicine.

My advice to you get clean for about 7 days because the test will pick it up!!..Then go test then pass it. But you are subject for randoms so you can not take suboxone on these jobs including cdl drivers...Let me go back to what the doctor also told me. He said that its a drug no matter how you look at it and he was very rude to me and he did not care that I was not going to get the job. I asked him if I was clean in a week would he remove the restriction and he said that it was a mandatory restriction that dot makes him do this! How you like that? I am now cold turkey off of this suboxone crutch!! It is ruining my life worst than when I was on pain pills. At least a pain pill only stays in your system for 3 days...Ha ha...But dont worry they get you either way. There should be a law put into place about this particular medicine. But there is nothing for it!! Oh yes and the doctor also told me that dot tested this drug on numerous individuals and they claim that a person who is taking suboxone will forget to tie off while he is in a man basket... But then after he told me all of this I carried the 50 pound box to the end of the hall and back... And I stated to the doctor... Gee well its a good thing that I remembered that I was carrying the box and didn't drop it. I am sure that he did not like my sarcasm but he was a real a**hole doctor!!I

Personally, I think it's a bunch of crap and I think it's discrimination especially if you knew how this doctor treated me... So I guess now I have to go back and pay this doctor to lift this restriction because now I am sure im in the computer somewhere with this on my name. I am so pissed at the whole entire situation period!! I hope that this helps and puts an end to all of the questions that you see online all of the time. I also want to add that these companies are now purchasing or going to these doctors and telling them to test for suboxone and methadone etc..The tests are easily sold online just like everything else..So you are done either way..Just take my advice and get clean and stay clean is all I can tell you because they have labeled this a drug schedule iii narcotic period end of subject end of statement have a great day!! Just to let you know these programs are charging $150 to $400 to get suboxone it was a scam from the beginning and it still is. These doctors most of them want you to stay on this drug. I have been on it for 4 years or better. It was time for me to quit anyway. My dr who prescribes this to me has never once talked to me about cutting down. He is making money from my visit. You have to be smart and take care of your self.

I went to take my CPR/Heart savers and skills tests last week an after I had written my medicine down and done my screen they said they were unable to hire me because I had to be on suboxon for at least 6 months before I could work there. Keep in mind I've worked for this company before a couple of times. It's in home health. This was going to be for my mother this time tho. Well today I talked to another lady at the office and she said the reason they couldn't hire me was because I FAILED my screen. That's untrue. They refuse to give me a letter stateing why they won't hire me after they let me say through my skills classes an take the tests. They waited till I drove an hour home an I called them to have my online tests reset before they would tell me. What are some of y'alls input on this an what can I do about it? I'm not goin to let them get by with this an do it another person. The lady at the Day report center where I took my screen put gabapention on my screen to send off to test the levels. The one nurse at the Home health agency called it an opioid lol

Be aware, i have seen questions about D.O.T pre employment tests. You can NOT be on either suboxone or subutex and legally drive a professional vehicle with a cdl!!!! Doesnt matter if it is prescribed or not it is on the banned list from the government. So do not volunteer the information at time of test if asked.

Re: Ugafan01979 (# 98) Expand Referenced Message

Not exactly true... It is a partial-agonist opioid. It IS an opioid, with high affinity to certain receptors, meaning it sticks to the receptors tightly and for a long time. Short acting opioids like heroin or oxycodone are not able to adhere to the receptors when the bupe/sub is already there, in most cases. The naloxone does not block opiates either. It is strictly there to prevent tampering aka, people administering it intravenously, because it strips all opioids from receptors when IV'ed. When taken sublingually, it literally does nothing. It is an opiate, but it has a "cap", or a ceiling, and the bupe/sub blocks other opioids due to its affinity, and naloxone does nada, unless taken intravenously.

No they will not find Suboxone in most drug tests they need to test for it separately BUP is the narcotic that is in the Suboxone but it's synthetic opiate that needs to be tested separately I know this because I just took a urine test and I had Suboxone in my system and they did not find it.

No it will not show up on a standard preemployment screen. The employer mite have a problem if the job is safety sensitive and as far as privacy that's all gone.
