Suboxone And Pre Employment Drug Screen (Page 2)

Updated

I am prescribed suboxone for an opiate addiction maintenance program. First, will it show up in a ten panel test? Second, can an employer discriminate if they have already offered me the job? Third, is this violating any privacy laws?

I used to be on methadone. I went for a very good job, finished all the tests and 3 hour physical and came time to see the DR.(the company did their own testing on site and had a drs office there) So I tell the DR. that I have methadone in my system and I stopped taking it 3 days before, but I have a prescription(which I gave him) and told him, I want to move on with my life and I was prescribed the methadone bc I eventually got addicted to painkillers and wanted to quit and my dr told me to go to meth clinic. So he says, "o this changes everything". He told me to have my dr. fax him a slip saying i was ok to work full duty and wasnt going to be prescribed that anymore. while hes telling me this, he is copying my prescription. I leave there and go straight to the drs. and have him fax everything over immediately bc i was SUPPOSED to start the job on Monday(physical was Friday). Their DR. told me they would call me once I faxed everything to confirm employment. So im waiting for a week, then like a month, emailling the company and calling...nothing. Then I get a paper in the mail saying they recinded the job offer bc I failed the pre employment physical! I was so pissed, I just wanted to be honest and it ended up screwing me. So now its like 6 years later and now im on suboxone. LOL I have to go for a hair, blood, urine test for a similar but better job. The testing is done by another company that is not associated with the job. Should I tell them I am on suboxone? Or just wait and see if it shows up and then produce the prescription. I really dont want to speak up early and then they call the company and say that I admitted I was on suboxone and I not get the job AGAIN! So its a similar situation with different circumstances. I have been with my current employer for 11 years and not once did any1 ever suspect that I was on any kind of maintenance program. Methadone or Subs. Im not like other people that I have seen when they were on methadone(falling asleep etc.) I am told I am the best worker in our department and even got employee of the year last year while on subs. So for any1 that says they dont want addicts working for them, give some1 a chance who has gotten addicted to something in the past. Its not like every1 is a freakin junky. Some people actually work for a living and do a good job at it. Anyways..what should I do about my situation. Thanks so much need to know ASAP. Im not positive but i think its just probably a 5 or 10 panel urine, a blood, and a hair follicle test. im kind of worried about the blood test. I cant find anything on it about subs! thanks

You SHOULD be okay! Like you said, I wouldn't say ANYTHING about it unless you test positive for it, which most employers don't but some do and more are starting. If you do get tested for it you don't need to divulge your entire medical history to get a job. Unless its CDL or likewise. Other then producing your prescription bottle to verify it's legal the rest is your business. If you feel the need to give an explanation tell them it's prescribed for pain, it's a common treatment to opiate naive patients to avoid addiction.

Let us know what happens!

I agree with Ash, I wouldn,t tell them. It may not come up positive for subs anyways.
If it did just show them your prescription.
I would not mention methadone or any past medical treatment having to do with addiction.
Keep it short and sweet.

Say that I do test positive, will they call me to produce the prescription before they tell the company? what if they ask if Iam on any meds right before the test? Bc I have all these papers to fill out about medical history and stuff. Im just gonna leave everything off of there. Hopefully they call me to produce the script b4 they call the company IF IT IS Positive.

Yes they would call you first, at least any reputable center would. When you test make sure you let them know you'd like to know when results are in, what they were (pick up the copy) and just say you'd like to be aware so you can expedite your hiring process.

Let us know how it all goes please :)

I have a pre-employment drug test coming up next week which involves a urine test and a hair follicle test. Will the bupenorphrine in suboxone show up on the hair if not the urine? I'm thankful for suboxone but if my life depends on this job. I just don't want to not get it just because im prescribed suboxone. This job means the world to me, my recovery and most of all my family. Im debating on stopping it now so i'll get the job. Please, any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry I didn't see this message until today. But either way I can't tell you for sure they wont test, but I'm pretty sure they have to request it specifically in a hair follicle, but these standards are changing so I can't say 100%. Can I ask if you taking suboxone and working there can't coexist? I know some enployers won't allow certain scripts because of side effects and liability issues.

If your just worried about people finding thinking less of you if they know it's prescribed for addiction maintenance you can deny this and state it's prescribed for pain. Unless your applying for a CDL, your medical history is no one's business but yours.

Good luck and please let us know how it went!

Its a very reputable car company in SC. It's a production associate job. I know one warning on the bottle says use caution while operating heavy machinery. Thing is though, I took their assessment test and their hands on simulator test and was one of the top in the class. Just worried about them not taking me because of the suboxone.

I know some CDL carriers have been forced to stop taking subs or quit...they always opted for the first. It's a tough call, I would take the test and not mention the suboxone at all, unless they mention the bupe in your results. Call the laboratory and simply ask what their usual standards are for testing. You can do this anonymously.

Let us know what happens, or what yoy decide to do :)

Well, I finally heard back. I was upfront with them and had all the necessary paperwork but they denied me the job. They said I have a medical condition and I would have to be off subs for a year before I can apply again. Oh well, I guess that's what I get for being honest and upfront with them. Thanks for all the help and information.

I Am wondering if the employer has to tell you whether or not they test for sub's.I am not perscribed suboxone and have been taking one per day for five months. I believe it is a 5-10 panel test (lab) urine test. Will it show up. I am worried that it will show up. I am in ohio. It's not a driving position. Do employers tell you they test for Suboxone.

Methadone shows up on panel tests. I was denied a job 1.5 years ago due to it. Even up front with a written, signed document from the doc that I was stable. No matter they s*** canned me before I even started.
Bupe on the other hand is variable per test. If you're taking a non court ordered 5,10,12 panel don't sweat it. Don't listen to any of these buffoons that said you'll pop hot for opiates, they prob did because they had s*** in their systems.... youll be cool.

Suboxin not narcotic. Simply works on same receptors (mu). Quit trying to scare people a#=hole! seriously how can you consider yourself a credible source on the site. People don't have to disclose that if they don't feel like it, cuz it could possibly in my be held against them..

no it does not. It is not an opiate it simply works on the same receptors. These people are i****s, close-minded a**holes who just want to scare you. It's your business, congratulations and keep it up.

Yes suboxon does show up but not on a five panel drug screen only on a ten panel drug screen, I went out and bought a bunch of drug test to practise and it never showed up but when I went for the test I was positive for buprenorphine which I what they look for when testing for suboxon

absolutely not. And it will not show up on a 10 panel unless it is a 10 panel with that drug specifically tested

Just a 2014 update...I've been on subs for about 3 years, and they do not show up on any of the urine tests I've taken... This is Nov 2014. Not under opiates or OxyContin. Disclosing it is shaky...it's a treatment under doctors supervision and should be under HIPPA laws protecting your privacy. Just my personal experience.
