Oxycontin Op 20mg
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have been on Oxycontin for 3 years. I am not stupid, I did not ask the doc to keep increasing my meds, I would decide to stop taking them for a two week on and two week off if I could. I am in chronic pain,my life has been altered to the degree I cannot walk without assistance any distance. I do walk into a store that has carts to push. Two back surgeries, the type of back that just keeps getting worse, had I not had the surgery I think I could have controlled the pain with Vicodan and Advil. But the doc. said I had to have the surgery. then the 2nd one did me in.It is a reputable doc who has done many surgeries, my opinion he wanted the money because this is when they discovered surgery was making things worse more than better. I blame that doc for me being in the pain I am in and for having to take the medicine. Now they want to treat me like a junkie off the street. I am so angry with this subject because of the reputation it gives you. If you have no choice then what?? I should have been given other options before the 1st surgery and I was not. Now they change the OC to OP and I became extremely ill over it. To the point I could not eat or drink or sleep. My stomach hurt sooo bad and everyday I got worse and worse. I felt like I was poisioning myself. The FDA approved this?? I want the people who approved it to take it!!!!!

Re: Michael (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

Bulls***. Many back surgeries are unsuccessful. How is it the patient’s fault? If a surgery makes someone worse it is not their fault for tying to get better.

I agree my rumeatologist put me the op, even after being off of it for a week, my stomach won't quit hurting. These doctors need to research these medications before they prescribe them to there patients. I never askèd for the oxy contin, she gave it with percocets 10 3.25 using the percocets as break through. I was also on fentanyl 25 micros it worked wonders but came off during bathing, so she discontinued that and left me with just the percocets. If someone ever tells you a dr is a good dr. That's bulls***. I'm going back to the nice dr I left and stay there. My knees hurt more now than they have in a long time and all I have for pain are the percocets. Rumeatologist quit managing my pain now, won't put me back on the fentanyl patch.

I'm disabled from what the infection did, so I'm on Medicare. The hospital's and surgeon's insurance companies have to pay for anything pertaining to what the infection did. If I was on Obamacare I'd be in the poor house from deductibles, co-pays and the 15% surcharge tax on durable medical goods.
None of my doctors accept Obamacare, so I'd really be screwed because their all the highend specialists. My family doctor a board certified Internal Medicine doctor won't accept it either. Having specialized medical problems on Obamacare is a certifiable nightmare for alot of people. I feel sorry for them. They could have just passed a single law to stop insurance companies from discriminating on pre-existing conditions, instead of messing it up for them like it is now...

Sara, the problem with surgery is the scar tissue it can create. There's Minimally Invasive spine surgery these days and it's the only way to do it if it has to be done. Surgery is no guarantee for a fix. If the nerve has been damaged in any way causing blood flow through the nerve itself to be disrupted you will sense that pain forever. Scar tissue rubbing on nerves from surgeries or procedures can be as bad or worse as the initial condition.

Steroid IV have to be used sparingly due to the damage they can cause from long term heavy usage. I can't have them in the area of the infection because of all the scar tissue, the IV solutions press the scar tissue into my nerves causing to much pain. I've never known anyone with moderate to severe pain having an IV that lasted longer than 6-8 weeks with a permanent condition. There's all sorts of things that can cause back pain and or leg pain too. Diagnostics have gotten better over the years. Pain mapping is a newer procedure their doing at high end clinics to find the actual cause/location of the pain source. Then they can better treat the cause of the pain.

Any doctor that wants to do surgery without first exhausting all conservative routes unless there's direct evidence of a major defect, get up and run away before they make you worse. It took me several years to get use to the big narcotics without them making me sick to my stomach, I tried medical grade pot and it didn't help my pain that much, but it did makeme very paranoid. I take 80mg oxycontin twice a day with 30mg Roxicodone 4 times a day for breakthrough pain. I never feel high, I just hurt less. If you're actually in enough pain you don't feel high off of synthetic opiates. When my pain gets really bad 200mg demerol & 100mg of Phenergan IV doesn't even feel like I had those put into me. What I can tell you is to get as educated as you can about your own personal injury and ALL available treatment options. Search all over the internet and your own location(where you live) as to what is available in your area. We're talking about YOUR LIFE, take charge of your own care and don't let anyone talk you into something your not comfortable with.

I would have rather lived with my herniated disc, than go through what I have for the last 25 years since the infection I got from the surgery. But with Minimally Invasive spine surgeries these days your risk is greatly reduced from infections & alot of scar tissue. Don't let me scare you away from what you may need done to get your life back, just make educated decisions about your own needs. Because you can't put the genie back in the bottle once you've been cut on... If you were in Texas Dallas-Fort Worth area I would highly recommend the Texas Back Institute or Minimally Invasive Spine Care to give you the best outcome. Go online read about these 2 places and find something comparable in your area. These places surgery is absolutely they last thing they want to do to anyone, but if you should need surgery their some of the best spine surgeons in the world! When it comes to your own health you don't want someone whose supposedly qualified, you want the BEST!

Hope this helps some, just remember it's a duty to yourself to get educated about your own personal situation and take charge of your own care. If you don't like what's being done get a second or third opinion from someone YOU choose! Hopefully you don't have Obamacare or you're already screwed... If you have any questions just ask them here from the reply option and they send me an email about the reply. Have a good day and learn everything you can about your condition and ALL available treatment options, nothing is etched in stone and what works for someone else may not work for you...

Mark-OMG-What a nightmare! I'm so sorry... Is there any end in sight for you?

It seems that for every good story I hear about a back surgery, I hear 90 that have terrible subsequent effects...

And the people that tell me they are living well and drug free? Oh, but they JUST smoke medical marijuana for pain...

I hate pot. I don't like feeling high. I just want to function.

My doctor has mentioned injections and if that doesn't work, surgery. I am VERY hesitant about going down this road.

My roommate is allowed injections twice a year, but they only last her 2-3 months AND the doctor took her off all meds but Gaba, telling her the shots SHOULD last 6 months...

SHOULD doesn't interest me. Reality is what we live with.

How long do your shots give you relief?

I am open to shots and not having to take pills everyday IF the shots really work.

I'm concerned that once I step on this road, I must walk it as she does. And I wouldn't wish her life of chronic unallieviated pain on anyone..

The surgery destroyed my life, I got an infection that scarred me from L4 to S1. The nerve sheaths are scarred, the dural sac is scarred, the nerve canals are scarred and L4-L5 & L5-S1 disc were destroyed. Had to be fused at those levels. That was 1989, now Minimally Invasive spine surgery is the only way to go if it has to be done. I've had 4 major surgeries to mop up from the infection and over 40+ minor procedures. Still having Rhizotomy, injections & Spinal cord stimulator implant surgeries till the day I die, I'm in my 50's now. There's alot of bad pain management doctors out there, for every 1 good one there's 5-6 bad ones. If their not board certified RUN! Emergency rooms and alot of doctors will treat you like you're a drug addict, it's shameful the way we get treated... The government is more concerned about drug addicts abusing prescription drugs, than the patients who actually need them just to make it through another day of an actual nightmare in real life... We are the forgotten few...

I cam across this BACK SURGERY thread and wanted others feedback...

Overall, do members believe that surgery has helped or harmed them?

Can you give details, please?

Any surgery causes scar tissue which is the main culprit in failed low back surgeries. The new OP oxycontins are causing various problems in alot of people. I take the 40mg bid and 4 10mg percocet for break through pain. When it was the OC oxycontin I only took the oxycontin, but with the OP I had to have the 4 10mg percocets added to get the same quality of life.
I've tried opana and it didn't work well on my pain and gave me headaches, but everybody is different. That's why there's many different types of opiates.

@ocyalater... while I appreciate your concern and attempting to help another going through intractable pain, going to Canada is not as easy as you may think. Anyone, including Americans no have to have passports to cross over. The wait is months long unless you want to spend $700 on an expedited one. A pain management specialist is what she really needs. No 'clinic'. Also consider the cost of having to return there on a regular basis. NOT practicable.

Never had surgery, hit at a red light. Second time, neck is bad if I get hit again it could be fatal. Took me months to get my Dr to put me on something stronger than narco tabs. Was up to 6 sometimes more in a day, the oxys op stopped headaches and pain but kills your stomach. Refilled for 2nd time while waiting for radiofrequency to work and pain is still there. Christ pill addicts have screwed it up for chronic pain suffers. At this point I will be interested in being youthenised stomach is still messed up even after stopping the oxy op. Must drunk ginger ale after every meal to assist in burping or else feels like my stomach will explode. I didn't do anything to deserve this, for the love of god this is BULLS***. Though I was alone thanks for posting, let's all suffer at the hands of the drug companies. The government will do nothing as always, why couldn't the world have ended 12/21/12?

This new formulation KILLS my stomach, reflux, rotting breath, bloating, gas and just an ill feeling that I do not get from Norco. Dr told me to try Opana, but I do not want to go there.

where as a docotor didn't put a gun to their head life did. Medical science is still in it's infancy and as for you calling the people in pain to blame you are sadly mistaken. The proper drug combo can make you comfortably and productive. Between the feds taking meds like darvon off the market and then companies changing formulation since some idiots are abusing it is just plain wrong. People who abuse drugs will use anything to get high. Those who are abusing are snorting, smoking, or injecting it. Those who are sick don't . Doctors get away with murder when in reality they're just a buch of screwded up auto mechanics. Ever try to find a good auto technician. It's really hard even the dealers don't seem to know what they're doing. Now this is a machine man created. Now give them something man didn't create. More and more it's about treating symptoms and keeping a lifelong paitient by keeping them sick or injured to insure them a constant cash cow to keep on billing the insurance company. These idiots making such comments are most likely office pussies who've never done a real days work a day in their life. Otherwise you'd have compassion and realize that these people were sold a lemon. Some may of had no other choice to have a surgery if say the pain was so bad the could no longer write or use an arm at all and left up for 3-4 days on end without sleep due to the pain so bad your body never really allows you to sleep. So until you experience anything more than the toilet seat smacking your d**k with it you don't have a clue.

This is in response to Mimi, I am surprised that there is a supposed professional here and no one has mentioned Steven Johnson's Syndrome. Look it up and get to your Dr.'s office ASAP, you are having a reaction to an accumulative medication.
As far as the rest, 80mg several times a day is high, and I suspect by reading the studies on the new formula that this pill does not release the same amount of medication, if you are used to something lower you will have mild side effects, but the nausea and bloating could be withdrawal. This medication has to be carefully tapered down, it could take months, so why Dr.s are ignoring obvious symptoms to a new formula confuses me, it is not the same, even on paper it is not the same. If it releases slower or not at all then the patient will have severe withdrawals similar to not taking the medication at all.
There has to be many complaints filed at this point to Purdue because I read these posts and have not seen anything positive.
When medication becomes a political problem or an election tool it is a very dangerous mix. This is a medication targeted to the undesirables, it has a reputation as the drug of choice for addicts, but because of the media. There are a lot of dangerous drugs out there that can be abused, I am not sure why this one is being targeted, I have not seen the stats on legit patients as apposed to addicts. An interesting question is can a patient become addicted by taking the medication as prescribed? The answer is YES!
Have their been studies on patients with tolerance on the new medication? Where are they? Why would Canada refuse the new formula?

I have to agree with Michael James here. You blame the Dr's and they are just trying to help you. No one held a gun to your head and forced you to have surgery. You could have very easily went and got a second opinion. Or a third. You say you did not ask the Dr to increase your meds. I highjly doubt that. You must have said something to him like you weren't getting relief or you still were in pain. You always have the option of going to a different Dr if you feel the one you are seeing is not treating you properly. You say yourself you're not stupid. Then stop acting like you are. You don't want to be on oxy then check into a rehab and try something different.

I was just started on these oxy 20 mg after years of my doctor telling me I needed something stronger than xtra strength Vicodin . I have worked very hard to keep myself from getting caught up with doctors and them getting their bonus through prescribing certain meds. I was very sick and addicted to soma at one point to the degree it left me totally out of my senses. Therefore ,I have been very hesitant to take anything I didn't first research . I am seriously tired of being treated like a junkie . I too am having problems with the new op's . My stomach began hurting after the first one I took , that is how I even noticed they were different. I do not believe these are FDA approved from the little bit of research I have done . On a happy note I have also been told at least around here you can still get the originals at walgreens which I will be updating when I refill. IT IS NOT OUR FAULT WE SUFFER . IT IS TIME WE BE TREATED LIKE REAL PEOPLE NOT DRUG SEEKERS. FOR ALL OF YOU WHO SUFFER WITH ME MAY GOD BLESS YOU TODAY , TOMORROW AND ALWAYS. THEY WILL BE PAYING OUT ONE DAY FOR ALL THE DAMAGE THEY ARE CAUSING. BE STRONG MY FRIENDS . EMAIL ME WITH ANY INFO. OR JUST TO HAVE SOMEONE LISTEN WITHOUT JUDGEMENT WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER......as for the loser putting people down on here it is obvious you have no clue what it's like to live the way we live . Get a life and find a new hobby we are not interested in your opinion.

I am a chronic pain patient . I take 20 mg of Oxycontin. This medication was life changing in a way that it gave me my life back. I was able to get out of bed. Go to my sons baseball and football games, drive a car, cook for my family, even went back to work after being bedridden for years. Now that I have experienced the new formula of oxycontin I have been suffering with severe stomach pain, nausea, headaches and to add insult to injury the medication is not effective at all. I'm in terrible pain again. I'm miserable. Cannot leave my house. I'm switching to a different medication. But fear that there is not one that worked as well as the older original formula of oxycontin. Tried 38 different meds and they all had terrible side effects and sedation. Thanks Perdue for pulling the rug out from under me.

Attention Michael James: What was the point of your careless, judgmental and hurtful message above? People use this site to gain/share information; but you seem to think it is a place for you to spew your unnecessary wrongful and stinging criticism upon people who experience perpetual chronic pain. I am not one who suffers from debilitating pain such as Samyjo; nonetheless I took umbrage with what you said and posted a complaint to the site. I hope your pathetic comments are removed and that this sites never allows you to post another comment. The level of prejudiced you displayed in your comment probably transcends all your personal and social interactions. One wonders what other sad spiteful things you say to people. Get a life you bully.

Oxycontin OP= bad medicine.
I have been taking 80mgx4/day for years. I have incurable pain. I am suffering new bloating, stomach pain, gas, and no pain relief from this new oxy op formulation. I have taken 4 ea. new 80mg oxy at one time and it does not work as well of one old OC80. I am afraid to take more at one time. Besides, side effects seem to follow dosage. They made new formula 80 op ineffective not only to Drug Addicts, but to Pain Patients as well.
Is there any equivalent to 4 ea. 80mg/day old formula Oxy OC?
