Oxy Help
UpdatedI'm currently taking 100mg of oxycodoe a day (20mg via percocet and 80mg via oxycontin) as well as 200mg daily of tramadol. I'm taking these as prescribed for chronic pain. My concern is, that after almost 2 years of being on these pain meds with the dosage increasing as my tolerance builds over time, if the Dr's are able to fix what is causing my pain, are there meds that will help ween me off the oxy? I'm terrified of the withdrawls. My second concern is, if they can't fix what is wrong, are there alternative meds for the pain? I can't imagine increasing the doses forever. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes, if they can fix the problem that is causing your pain, the medications can be slowly tapered to minimize the withdrawal effects, or your doctors may want you to use Suboxone, which is also used to help drug addicts wean off of drugs.

On the other hand, if they can't and you must continue with pain medications, there are still a few more options that can be used, in the future, to help control your pain.
One would be the Suboxone, that I mentioned above, since it is an opiate.
The other would be the time released patches, Fentanyl:

Are there any comments or questions?
I, too, am very interested in finding an equally effective pain reliever as the Oxycontin ER 80mg, but for a vastly different reason. My nephew, who moved in with me and my Mom less than 2 weeks ago, stole HALF of my 60-pill Rx a mere 3 days after having it refilled (and after he had already stolen 3 of the 6 I had left at the end of my last refill, leaving me short and without ANY pain relief for two full days before my insurance company would approve payment for the next refill!) I am frantic and worried that my Dr. won't write me a script for an alternative (since the ins. co. won't pay for another one so soon, and will potentially also deny even a different opiod pain medication because of the fact that I just had the Oxy filled (on Jan. 30th). All I can do is wait and see.
However, and in reference to Gabriel's concern over withdrawl (and, of course, I can't guarantee that my experience will be the same for her), the only thing that I suffered from for the 60 hours or so that I had to go through without any pain relief (Oxy) was pain.... just that, pain. No fun, however, I never felt any withdrawl-like symptoms. I suppose it might be different for someone (like my nephew, obviously) who IS an addict and/or who's taking it recreationally but I really do think that if you're only taking it for the purpose it's intended for, and you're not psychologically addicted to it either, then you may not experience actual physical withdrawl. I just hope and pray that my Dr. will help me through this ridiculous (and heartless) situation he's put me in and I hope that, one way or another, Gabriel, you find yourself in pain-free status soon!
