LIHEAP can be done every 6 months
Put LIHEAP AND your state in your search bar. You must meet the usual food stamp criteria even if you're waiting on disability. The amount you receive depends on your total income, basic expenses you pay like rent, utilities, and dependents. Some states have cash assistance for those that meet the state criteria for disability. This is not the same as SSI or SSDI and is like welfare. except you don't have to have dependents. If you receive Medicaid, Transportation to and from your medical appointments is a mandatory benefit in all 50 States. If you have Medicaid you can request Long Term Personal Care Services and an evaluator from the state will come to your home and evaluate you to determine if you need the help and if you do how many hours a week you need.

@mary wow ?? you have a complex issues. Me personally I would stay where my Dr is helping me because if I'm in pain in no good to anyone including myself. Moving to another state and starting with another Dr. With all of these new laws is going to de difficult. I was kind of confused about your options for staying where you are. Can you get food assistance SNAP also there I a program called Liheap that helps with a yearly payment. Although you may not b able to get a p/ t job , there are many resources for ppl on need and awaiting disability. Liheap helps with a yearly payment and the bill doesn't have to b in ur name to get this help. Find all the resources you can to help pull your weight in this relationship. Hopefully you have Medicaid see if you qualify for some home health aide or call them let them know your needs about going to the grocery store. In my state my insurance pays for taxi ride to my Dr. . So see what help you can get while awaiting your disability. There is a a program if u go to where you apply for food stamps that will in some cases give you 100-200$ monthly while u wait for disability.do you have a SSI lawyer? Good luck to you and I hope you are able to tap find the resources that are available.

Chris needs to be ready to take the meds a Dr prescribes without complaining. Most drs will start patients out on low dose weaker pain meds and go from there. Just because a Dr in the past gave you certain meds is no guarantee that another Dr will. But if you aren't willing to work with a Dr, you will never know what he might have prescribed in the future. This may take several months.

Chris east Daytona, I know after the recent visit you had you are exhausted emotionally. Its ok rest if you must but do not give up. I got the name of 2 Dr s. I personally don't know much about them but call and make sure you have documentation of the meds and doses you were on that helped, that way as BL suggested you are not asking for a certain type/dosage of meds. It will be in your file, and make sure you and the doc look over them together. Personally I carry my own set and send the office a copy. If you have yours with you and on hand you can make sure they have read your xrays, mris that are time and money consuming.

Chris, if a Dr wants you to do other types of pain management in addition to meds or in the beginning instead OG meds can you afford it?

@Chris East Daytona. I'm awaiting more details but was given these two for sources near you. Of coarse you wouldn't go in there asking for certain things your records should do that for you..well hopefully you have notes or a prescription history printed out showing every and all changes. So here goes the info I got Advantacare 1079 Mason ave or Dr. Ortaloni in daytona

I am partly lucky in the situation that I am in, but also am scared.

I moved to Las Vegas almost 6 years ago, and almost immediately, I had troubles begin. I had gall bladder alternating with kidney stones, which meant I ended up with 6 ER visits in 4 1/2 months, and a gallbladder surgery. After that, I ended up with severe pain in my legs, that made it so hard that I had to use a walker. in August after the surgery, I ended up with blood clots in both lungs. During this, I had to use hydrocodone...and then my doctor sent me to a pain doctor. They diagnosed me with fibromyalgia, but said that since fibromyalgia does not indicate pain killers (or whatever that word is), they could not prescribe pain medication. I don't remember if the pain doctor prescribed tramadol (I think he did), but it never worked on me (and still doesn't...I have tried it several times, and each time, It has not).

I finally quit the pain doctor, who never seemed to be interested in me as a patient, but I seemed to be a number. I asked to change doctors, and the old doctor recommended that I change to the main doctor in the clinic (women's clinic), who was internal medicine specialty. I agreed to go to this new doctor. The first appointment, this doctor sat down with me, and basically the first thing she said was "we had a conversation within the clinic, and the previous doctor told me that you are a drug seeker. Because of this, I will not prescribe you narcotics." I talked with her during this conversation, telling her the sources of my pain, and why I tried not to use it as much as I needed, that it didn't affect me as much (I don't get "high"...I don't know what that feeling is). Because of that discussion, she took a chance with me, and prescribed hydrocodone again to me. During the time I have been with her, she has seen my pain levels increase...she has prescribed me oxycodone for a period, then when I didn't need it again, she dropped me back down to hydrocodone, and now, I am back up to oxy's again (30mg). I also take Tylenol, ibuprofen, soma, blood thinners, a drug that is supposed to lower my heart rate (for the last year or 2 years, it's been 110bpm, it's also used to lower high blood pressure, which I don't have), duloxetine, pregablin, and a drug to help restless leg syndrome. I am also going to go in on Wednesday to be checked with an EKG.

What I am scared of, is that my boyfriend and I are close to breaking up. He has given me until November or December to have an income coming in, and that does not include "waiting for disability"...I have to have it by then. He's not asking for a full-time one, but enough to pay part of the utilities, my bills, and my food. He also wants me to be able to do things such as getting my own groceries (I have had to ask him for about the last year to go get my groceries, partly because it's hard for me to walk to the store, go through the store, then get back home (it's hard for me to walk 1/4 of a mile to it), and partly because I can ask him to get stuff, and he will, if I go...I get a lot more than I went for, even with a list.

When my doctor dropped down to 1/2 days, her nurse asked me if I wanted to move to another doctor. I said I thought it wouldn't be a good idea, because of having to start over with the pain drugs/etc with the new doctor but that I would do as my doctor wanted. I talked with her, and laid down my concerns, and she said it would be better to remain with her.

About 2 months ago, was the point that my boyfriend and I discussed the breakup. Talking to my father, at that time, he wanted to come right out, and move me to Missouri. I didn't want to go at that time, because I am still in love with my boyfriend, no matter what problems there are. Plus honestly, I don't want to move from Las Vegas, after having lived here for almost 6 years, and in various cities in the Bay Area, California (concord, san jose, and Vacaville) for about 13 years...so moving from basically high-tech urban (with buses running 24 hours, along with various pluses (mainly erotic), to moving to a "country" setting (although it would be Joplin)...I feel that a "large" city there would be like a "small" city over here...it would almost be like moving to Vacaville again, without having 2 larger cities close to it.

But then, thinking a bit...I am scared to move from here, also, because of moving from my doctor to another one (having to start over, essentially), as well as having to move from the close locality to a VA hospital with an ER. I think in the last year, I probably have gone to the ER 5 or 6 times, and did not at least 2 times, where I *really* needed to, but my boyfriend was with his other girlfriend, and I did not want to disturb them, so I bit the bullet, and basically told myself "if it goes above a 7, I will go"... usually at 7's, I go...but the last 3 times, I waited til it hit 8's...some of the reason because I have gone so many times over the last 5 years, much less the last year, that I wanted to see if it could go back down. I am also VERY scared about having a drug seeker label put back on me again, that I have not gone, even in the past before, because of that reason. Where my dad lives in Joplin, the clinic is 35 miles away. I don't know if it has an ER, or a women's clinic, or a hospital. The last time, however, I talked to my father, he said because the VA has not built a clinic in Joplin, after trying for several years, he said they now have passed out cards to patients in Joplin, so that they can see "civilian" doctors in Joplin. I don't know if this means any that you choose, if you can see specialties, if you can go to local places for things such as blood draws/diagnostics, xrays, PT, etc, and how they deal with newly prescribed medications (when I went into the "civilian" hospital for blood clots in my lungs, I was put onto blood thinner medications. I was released on a Saturday, and was told I *had* to have the medication that day. He prescribed for a month, but told me I could have as little as I wanted. Since the VA is not open on the weekends (and at this time, there was not a VA hospital, just clinics, and I had gone to the Air Force hospital, which only takes VA in the ER), we had to buy the medication (and the pharmacy told me we had to buy at least $15 worth). We went in on Monday, and got the rest prescribed, and got the medication started. But now, I don't want to be put into the situation of having to buy medication from the local pharmacy, until the VA pharmacy can mail the medication to me (mainly because here, refilling medications, sometimes it takes a week or more to get it). Or getting the prescription from doctor, and having to drive the 35 miles to the clinic to get the prescription (rather, having to have my father drive me, since I don't have a driver's license).

Right now, I have pain in my legs (mainly my lower legs, like shin splints), lower back pain, and pain in my upper left arm (the shoulder, like bursitis, although with the last x-ray, it does not show bursitis, so she thinks it might be spine trouble coming down from the neck)...I also have plantar fasciitis in both feet, although luckily right now, it's not that painful. I can't walk the 1/4 mile to the grocery store... in fact, just walking to the bus stop, which is about a block away, is very hard..sometimes, just walking from one place to another in the house, will leave me with my heart palpitating, and sometimes slightly dizzy and out of breath. Changing 2 pans of kitty litter or doing a full amount of dishes can leave me out of breath and in pain, even though I sit in a chair doing both chores. I sometimes can't even take laundry out of the washer and put it in the dryer, or take it out and put it in a basket, much less carry it in my room to fold. I really can't get a job right now, because I can't sit up in a chair for 8 hours straight (well, with breaks), I can't stand for more than 10-15 minutes straight, and my sleep changes so many times...there's times I am falling asleep in a chair, I go to bed, and can't fall asleep again for 6+ hours, even with the tv off and the light off and the door closed. I have fallen asleep on the couch, watching tv, and woken up with food dripping down my chest, because I fell asleep while eating (possible narcolepsy). During going to school, and externship, I fell asleep during a meeting (that I had no memory like 3 hours later, of being at), I nodded off during classes, and one time, I was brought to the Dean to be talked to, and later, have no memory of being at (the next day, when the teacher said something like "do you want to go to the Dean again?"...I had no idea of what she was talking about)). Anyway, the basic is, I don't feel I can get a job, due to my inabilities (not sure I can say "disabilities" if the doctor has not declared me so). I have a plan to try to open a consignment store, which I know sounds backwards, because if I can't walk/stand/etc, then how can I run it...but I feel I would have more control...I can hire someone to help me...I can sit when needed...I can put things on the rack when needed (yes, things don't sell if they aren't on the rack)...I can go through customer's clothing at home, write up the paperwork, hang/steam/tag/price the clothing at home, then place it on the rack when I get to work the next day...my only real problem would be getting tot he place that I choose (whether it's the indoor swapmeet that is 1 mile down the road, by riding the bus, or choose one further away (store or swapmeet), and either ride the bus, or get a ride from my bf...or even go so far as hiring a taxi.

Anyway...I wanted to slightly vent...I wish there was a way to say what my email was, or another way to contact me, since they delete ways of contacting. One thing I can say, is look in indiegogo within a month, to look for the plus size consignment store. (*laughs*)..but my main reason for venting on here, was mainly to say to ya'll, who would understand, my fears of moving, especially since I don't really have a way of affording to remain here. To open the store, I am getting a settlement from having the blood clots, and should be getting enough money to open the store in a swapmeet environment (and pay him back some of the money I owe him)...if I took the money, and tried to rent an apartment, it would only get me through about a year, then I would be right back where I started, because I don't think I would have a job that I could do by then...and even if I didn't open the store, and used the money to live with my bf...he said he would not consider that money as "income" since it would be limited, and again, would ask me to move out.

So...I feel that I am kind of stuck...I want to be here, but I think I am "forced" into moving in with my father...probably not my worst choice...especially since he knows the health I am in, knows about the possible store idea, and says that I might have a better chance there (since rent is cheaper there), and that I have 4 cats (which my bf isn't too happy about, and is a slight part of the reason he's asking me to move out. If I had the money, I think the cats would still be a contention between us, because he allowed me to get 2, the other 2, my ex-husband asked me to "babysit" them for a year...then basically has said he won't be able to move them in with him, since his new gf is allergic to cats. they were gotten when we were together, but were always considered "his" cats, and when he asked me to watch them, I had missed them, and it was an "of course!" moment, especially when my bf agreed reluctantly...then when my ex-husband said that he couldn't take them back, that his girlfriend's ...aunt I think...said she would take them (and lives like in Washington)...I said I didn't want them to go up there, because one of the cats is VERY scared of strangers, as in still runs into the bedroom when he comes in through the door, looking over her shoulder to see who is coming in (and no one else lives here, and one person comes over once a week to visit)...and such a long drive to get up there.(yes, it would be a long drive from Las vegas to Missouri, and she would be scared of my father, and he has cats, at least one indoor, and the two old "babysitting" cats fight with one of my young cats all the time, so they might not be good with my father's cat(s)).

Anyway, thank you ALL for listening...I so appreciate it! I will look on here more for any responses that ya'll will have to possibly help me!

You may want to find another Dr. Although that is go guarantee that you will be prescribed the meds you want. Many drs are getting sway from prescribing pain meds for younger folks.

Austin, TX. 27 year old female. 3 bulging discs in my back with a herniated disc as well in my back. One bulging disc in my neck. I have already had the shots and now they recommend I do them again. I'm not up for it. I also have a pain management doctor that said verbatim, "I do not prescribe narcotics." Now I don't know what else needs to be said about that, when I've been prescribed them before. Also, he says he won't give them to me because I am too young to have them. I also have a computer job which most people would love. However, I'm sitting down for 8 hours a day staring at the computer which is hell on my back and my neck. This why I need the meds. Please help.

Njshore, Thank you for the invitation. Right now I'm not free at that time, but hopefully I will be in a month or two.

Chris, you are going to have to invest at least 3-4 visits with a Dr. Asking for a specific drug or dosage is a red flag. You nor anyone else can tell a Dr how to treat you or what to prescribe. The diagnostic tests may or may not make a difference. You need a diagnosis but you also need proof that the diagnosis is severe enough to require strong pain meds. Also most, if not all drs are going by the 120 mg Morphine or 120 mg Morphine Equivalent daily dosage the FDA now recommends now. If you want to find a Dr to manage your pain you need TI accept that you won't be able to get high doses of pain meds. The alternative will be no pain management.

Seems I must be jinxed - Would like to read "Fight for PainCare Network" but just as my dr. turn downs I simply cannot win. One idea came up with is my records are old ( x-rays, bone density tests are all starting 2011 then older) so going tomorrow for all new ones. Feel like if dr. has verification in his files for alphabet gang he may be less scared. When dr. sees me he knows I have pain-however that not same as having paperwork to verify for those not viewing my presence. My last attempt I faxed records to dr. then he turned me down for appt. saying my records were too old Plus he not prescribe my pain med (OpanaER). So guess he not even want discuss what he DOES prescribe with me so newer records must be deal breaker? Honestly feel like are so few drs. left here that haven't been arrested are good ones who cannot handle so much restriction, constantly being spied upon, added hassle to an already difficult specialty so they have moved out of state. I know there must be a very few brave & dedicated pain docs left however finding that incredibly tiny needle in such a huge haystack is impossible esp. if you are lying on coach unable move or think sufficiently to even maintain self daily living. Plus wheelchairs inhibit things dramatically so my capability is pretty much zilch. This existence is getting psychologically damaging if I cannot return to a livable state again my brain is not gonna take it any more than my body. No psyche dr. will fix the state I am in either-how can you make a dog feel ok when he is chained to a tree in rain or ice or scorching heat unable to move more than a foot? He will certainly die from existence in an "incapatible with life" state. Hate being dramatic but while I am able to sit up & type my venting is emerging. I took a small dose & am having a lighter than usual day of agony so trying catch up things due to be done ages ago.
Thanks for all help you guys-looks like options left might only be moving to a better resourced & less scrutinized state. Doubt I can do that but might be only answer if I want life & not constant pain again like had for over 10 years.
THANKS,
Chris-eastcoast-Daytona Beach,FL

Chris-Datyona, locate a physician that will prescribe according to your condition; not what fda, DEA (The alphabet gang i call them LOL) recommends. I read an article that says even MD's that RX according to guidelines have the same liability and chance of being sued/sanction/investigated..etc.

@Chris idk why but i thought you were male. A pharmacist had mentioned that when going to these pharmacies and dr.s who are giving us a hard time to record it!! Document it !! There are MANY documents out there on how to file complaints @ pharmacy (ists) just all kinds of self empowering documents.

Njshore, Thanks for clarifying. If someone has Medicare they can geta Home Health Nurse TI come in for medical things. For help with a shower or getting dressed and other Activities Of Daily Living they will have to have Medicaid because Medicare doesn't pay for Personal Care Services. Its great that you have Social Workers and Advocates in NJ that will help patients free of charge without already being the patients caseworker. But I not every state has that.

The only thing I can suggest to Chris is To Ger a copy if her medical records from her DRS especially the last one that treated her for pain. It seems that either there is something negative in them or it may be Chris's attitude when she sees the Dr.

Hey BL: First off these are suggestions, since everything she does, does not seem to work. Here in NJ social workers and health advocates will help you when you are alone to figure out your situation. We have some really wonderful, dedicated men and women. If the doctors orders a nurse to come into your home and the nurse tells the doctor his/her patient is in terrible pain it is possible the doctor will work with the nurse to make the patient feel more comfortable by giving or adjusting dosages (whatever method the dr decides to use). As for Nursing at home, yes you are absolutely right it is not free unless you are on disability or SS. Here in NJ people that are disabled can get a nurse and home health care aide to come into your home and help. They will do everything from dressing changes, administer medication to help you with a shower. Our Social workers are wonderful and help in any way possible and will do all sorts of research for you. Now as for Chris is concerned, I thought she was disabled, received disability and had medicare/medicaid. Since she is so sick for so long I thought that was a given. If that is not the case then you are absolutely correct. I don't think you understand where I am coming from; my intentions are honorable and just trying to help in any way possible. If you notice I always say maybe for example, I never say for sure or use words that this will definately work for sure; how can I possibly know that as I am not a professional. I do not know everything and I am not a doctor or even a social worker. However I have had crohns for 38 years and have dealt with many doctors and nurses, etc. and because of this I guess I feel for people and try my best to help. I don't know what else to do for Chris. I am not always right but I went by what they do here in NJ and a personal friend of my who is a social worker is speaking with Chris and trying to find her help. Every doctor she goes to ends up in a dead end solution and she says shes in terrible pain. I hope you understand and just trying to help as a friend, not healthcare provider or professional in any way. If you are in the medical field maybe you can help her and give her advice. Please do all you can to help Chris since you seem to have a lot of information and comments on what people say. Maybe you can speak with her directly. Just a suggestion it is up to you and Chris. I wish you all the best. Sincerely, NJShore.

Njshore, nurses. social workes and advocates aren't free and they can't make a Dr prescribe a pain Med. Where do you plan on finding these people? If I've misunderstood, I apologize.
