I was recently diagnosed with Adult ADD and have been prescribed Amphetamine Salts (Generic for Adderall) for a few months now. The initial dosage was one 10mg tablet/ three times a day and recently my Doctor upped the dosage to one 30mg tablet/ twice a day. I know that overall this has been very beneficial for me but I cant help but wonder if the generic brand (IR Amphetamine Salts) has less of the active ingredient, and more unnecessary side effects(irritability, fatigue). I know that while the active ingredients are likely to be the same, the "fillers" usually are not and even the active ingredients can vary up to 10%. I also know that everybody reacts differently depending on their bodies' make-up as well as the drugs and I have always reacted sensitively to any kind of drug. The more I "google" the more I want to stay away from the generic form. Also- almost every pharmacy around has little to no Adderall Brand IR tablets in stock, they only have the generic brands and possibly Adderall brand but only the Extended-Release. My Doctor seems to firmly believe that there is no difference between Adderall XR and Adderall IR, and because she prescribed me the generic form (Amphetamine Salts), she probably doesn't see a difference there either. I don't have the time to ask 10 doctors what they think so if anyone has any information or experiences please share! Thank you!

The generic is still effective for me, but the issue seems to be with the time release mechanism. I think there's some formulaic difference. I think the generic doesn't have the same bioavailability with the initial release, resulting in a sharper curve with a later peak.

The Shire formulation has roughly half the dose suspended in the polymer beads with the other half coating the outside, resulting in an early onset and a delayed reaction. The polymer beads don't metabolize quickly in the stomach, as they are resistant to the acidity - thus they metabolize in the intestines, releasing the second half of the dose there.

I think that the generics have more of the active ingredient suspended in the polymer beads, and I also suspect the polymer used is tougher for the gut to metabolize. That's my problem with the generics. Peak level is way later than expected, and being third shift that can really mess with an already delicate sleep schedule.

I have found a decent way to work around this problem is to increase the alkalinity (lower the acidity) of your stomach before dosing. Taking an antacid 20-30 minutes before your dose seems to do the trick and smooths out the curve. It's a bit much, but it's worth it given the price difference.

I totally agree with you. I take 10MG of adderall XR about 8 AM. Feel a little bit focused and on my game plan. Around 6 at night I start feeling it more and I'm up all night. Sleep perhaps 2-3 hours every 3 nights. I'm going to take some zantac before dosing as you suggest and see how things go. I have the TEVA brand.

What color and design are the pills noob ? There are several types of 30milli IR generic. Ranging from very good, to far below avg, to a pill that does nothing............GENERIC>>>>

1. OVAL ORANGE 30MG IR b 974 3 | 0

2. Pink round things. An ice cream scoop full of pills should make meds work

3. ORANGE round things. The makers should be arrested for fraud. take 1,000 of them. they do nothing

4. NAME BRAND ROUND ORANGE. its been so long since i taken them, cuz like u said, its hard to come by. i believe they say AD on one side. 3 | 0 on the other

I was also prescribed adderrol generic 30 xr. In the beginning it worked well. Over time I have very low to tolerance for anything that bothers me. I lash out at my wife for anything out of the ordinary. I can't drink any alcohol because I turn into a monster with out of control behavior and have almost total recall of the events that take place. My wife is at her breaking point because this helped so much in the beginning. I consider myself a very upbeat person, but I have noticed that I am having more lows then high moments. I am very focused, but it seams now kind of paranoid about thing now that never bothered me before. Fits of rage have also been a result of the salts I am taking. I have a very low apatite and if I don't eat I am very moody. I could go on and on.

I also take adderall salts. I too experience fatigue and find myself taking more just to get moving. What are people that need these suppose to do when they don't have enough to get through the month?

The maximum dosage for adults is 60mg a day when prescribed for ADD or ADHD..that's why they make 30mg tablets & capsules!

There's a huge difference in generic and name brand, I been on IR and ER for years and yeah I know your pain, I pretty much get 3 different kinds every 3 months I might get lucky and get the one that actually works for me and don't make me sick 2 months in a roll, But yea they don't care, It's all the same to Docs and pharms, I go threw this big thing with Suboxone and subutex but it all comes down to they don't care about you or me unless your somebody of importance like a dr. Or something but I bet they wouldn't give somebody with heart problems whatever medicine is laying around, I'm sure they get the right meds everytime but when it comes to stuff like this if you say a word about what kind you need then there going to Red flag you saying your just trying to get a certain kind of medicine and blah blah blah welcome to the mesd game where nobody has a voice so your wasting your time with posts it's like beating a dead horse. Idk why I even comment anymore but hope you can get what you need just telling the truth.

While I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to that type of medication (my mom takes the "generic form" same as you except 30mg 3x a day! I have noticed irritability & disoriented behavior in her. I myself have ALWAYS questioned "generic" medication. I truly believe they do not work as good as name brand & the fillers give me horrible side effects including migraine headaches! Unfortunately the medication I take is offered "generic" & surprise surprise that is what insurance will pay for. It discusts me.

Well have to disagree and somewhat agree. As a 30 yr chronic pain sufferer I've heard all the political crap, going back and forth while real ppl, with real pain issues are being led to their deathbed, whether suicide, resorting to Street drugs for relief, or just plain giving up as they can't deal with or function anymore.

The premise on your post is just not correct. For folks that suffer from chronic pain or add, these medications are not only lifesavers, but unharmful.

There are also the unfortunate and suffering addict that has been using for so long, controlled, judicious narcotics, (methadone and others, are life savers) as their brain chemistry has been altered for life, and yet they are made to feel like crap.

In agreement, providing strong and real education to the dangers of abuse are the best $$$$ spent for the younger and older population.

My insurance will only pay for generic, and I've been taking Adderall generic for about 5 years to treat ADD & Hypersomnia. I've encountered problems with some of these generic brands, some seem less effective and 1 made by Activis didn't agree with me at all, but that was related to an allergy to a filler/binder used. Best advise, note what brand your taking how and make sure your pharmacy does not do the old switcheroo.

I would just ask for Dexedrine myself. It's the most potent drug for ADD. No joke cause when I started after riddelin they put me on adderall and when that didn't do the job a medium to high dose of Dexedrine did perfect. I was able to concentrate with no distractions. It's almost like method amphetamine, but legal and a capsule or pill form.

Who are you tell this b.s. about adderal and tell her to stop taking them. She has ADD!! That is a condition they prescribe them for!! I have been on it for 13yrs I have narcolepsy and she is totally correct about the generics of adds, certain ones are crap plan and simple and don't work worth a s***! So don't say you know what your talking about , but come at her like she doesn't know what see is talking about with the generics vs non, you just assume she has built up a tolerance. I know personally about the new generics of adds,that came on the market a few years ago it took awhile to figure it out that it was the pills that they were not the ones I had been taking for years and they were making me sick and not working. I also take xanax I'm @ only have had a script for few months and I need them for my anxiety I highly doubt that I will regret ever been put on them. It's people like you that really don't know much about or have never had like chronic pain, and think the new regulations passed by the dea and cdc with congresses approval that has made it it impossible for chronic pain patients to get their meds to help them function better and not suffer from severe debilitating pain every day. Moral of her post is there is a big problem with the generics of this medication! Not that she has a tolerance and none work for her. And no need for your anti these drugs are bad and no one should be on them.

Morning Lissa...i feelbdo sorry for ur inconveniance cause by meds...i was given incorrect meds ..twicein December.. i became so sick, very sivk..i went back , he then presripe another heart and blood pressure tsblet..dont know for what reason, im onmefication allready and was doing fine foryrs..i hadbto stop immediately .. xtra heart and high blood pressure tablets was terrible, so noe im too scared to take sny .. new medication .. my bofy went through so much pain, swelling, fever and more. I havent got a Medical aid, so i must go to the State hodpitald, but nevet had s problem before ..i went again , but saw snother dr i feel better now.. how sre u feeling noe, are u stillbon the generic tablets ? Hope to hear from u doon.. God Bless xx

Wow Margarita....you don't seem in touch with ADD/ADHD issues at all. First, we takes meds to feel "normal" or "typical" instead of seeking a high. Secondly, I've known no one with ADD/ADHD to develop a true addiction where they establish a tolerance and require more and more of the substance to function. Usually there is an increase in dosage when the negative side effects decrease. I have mixed feelings about using it on minors, it seems too strong, but it does help.
Overall, I think improved diet and healthy lifestyles could benefit most of us. Lissa thanks for the information on Vyanase. I have the jittery thing with adderal.Many blessings to all.

It may be glandular (thyroid, hypothalamus, adrenaline gland fatigue), diet based or it may be it is time to try a new med. I have found switching them up helpful as I have gone through hormonal changes (post-pregnancy and perimenopause).

This med makes some people agressive. Ask for something else ....other meds are similar without this side effect.

I agree with your points and anger with her views. The God card can't be played in the medical community as you said. In a way if we are leaving our health and destiny to what he has in store for us, then all of us are bypassing his direction for us. Figure if he wants somebody to come home(Heaven)and we are giving heart transplants or other organs, then we are already disregarding his big plan. Same with medications and other ways to live longer.
I do have to say that 8 Mgs of Xanax is a high dose daily, and while it may help you, can you imagine going a day without it? Your withdrawals will be deadly. Say if you go locked up or natural disaster, out of stock pharmacy, there may be a time that you can't access that degree or any of the dosage you take. I too take Xanax but limit or try to at no more than 2 mgs daily and usually under 1mg. I try a low dose of say instant paxil or wellbutrin/buspar etc. and it helped me. Not judging just thinking of your hell if what I mentioned above prevents you from getting it, or if your Doc retires or has an accident, I don't know many Docs that will continue that daily dosage, regardless how long you have been on it.

Again I agree with you and it is your choice, but really just voicing a concerned opinion on the latter I spoke of. Cheers, and happy progression.

What do you base this on?

Some people may experience irritability as a side effect but I've been taking it for over a year now and have never experienced that one.

Are you a doctor of medicine or current taker of adderall XR? Doubtful. Don't make broad statements you can't back up. It irritates me to no end when people who have no comprehension of what they are talking about give advice on serious issues that could result in people denying themselves treatment that could greatly improve their status in life.
