If you're taking a contraceptive that contains a form of estrogen, such as one of the combined oral ones, then yes, it can lower the efficacy of them and there have been instances were women got pregnant, due to taking antibiotics, so it would be best to use a backup method of contraception, until 7 days after you have finished the antibiotic. Do I still need to drink plenty of water taking this medicin? ## Hi Pratik D, I would just recommend listening to your body and staying hydrated throughout the day as needed. However, drinking a gallon of water a day is usually adequate for most individuals who are active and require more hydration. The instructions for taking this medication note the following: "Co-trimoxazole comes as a tablet and a liquid to take by mouth. It usually is taken two times a day but may be taken up to four times a day for severe lung infections. Drink a full glass of water with each dose."
