I've been taking merformin for years and it never stunk, until this year and it seriously smells like dead fish, I'm calling my doctor Monday cause I believe this is what is causing me to have the poo's..... Plus headaches.....

I am having the same problems with b oou dynamic odors with my last metformin refill. The pharmacist said the fishy smell of the pills is because of the new manufacturing company so next refill I plan to request a different manufacturer.

Thanks for calling it what it smells like. My generic bottles of acetaminophen began to smell like urine the last two bottles. I am not going to use them. I bought a different brand generic and the urine smell is not there. I a going to throw the other two bottles of generic away. I got those through my insurance OTC meds.

04/23/2015, Lifestyle Changes Requires Diligence. I was diagnosed with T2DM last year and put on Metformin from 50mg 2x a day up to 1000mg 2x a day. My medication has never ever had an odor from the bottle or pills itself. But let me tell you I have been through rings & hoops fighting "body" odor. I shower 2 x a day, I was sweating profusely and I associated it with being menopausal, later to be prescribed "hypercare" for underarm sweating and odor. I shave armpits and private areas constantly, I rotate my bath soap & shower gels constantly, I douche on a regular basis. This seems to be the ONLY way to keep my hygiene in check. I keep underarm deodorant in my purse, at work locked in my drawer. I also keep on hand at work -in my purse, those small FD & DG body sprays cause I never know when I'm gonna have a Metformin bathroom pureed "stool" run! I have to take the medicine keep my glucose levels in check IT just makes me extremely extra cautious with an acute awareness to be vigilant about the care of my body & breath, MY Method to the madness is that I constantly rotate bath soaps, toothpaste, mouthwashes, deodorants and feminine washes & spays, deodorant panty liners but I only use vinegar & water douches.

I have been taking two 1000mg tablets of Metformin daily for 3 years. I have noticed that the pills have a slight urine smell and they sometimes make me gag because of the taste they leave on my tongue. However I just got 2 bottles of pills from Welldyne which is our mail order pharmacy and they smell and taste like grape flavoring has been added to them. Are the drug companies adding flavoring to mask the taste or should I be concerned and call Welldyne?

Trying to find out WHY my Metformin smells like fish. Every googled answer gives me what to do to deal with it but not WHY it smells. I take my Rx anyway, i just want to know what they are using as filler that makes it smell that way. Are they using fish cells to deliver the medication?

I had my blood work-up recently and my doctor increased my metformin due to a higher a1c level. I was taking 500 mg with no 'bad' ill effects. When I increased to 2 pills a day, 1 in the morning and 1 at dinner time (they say to take it while your eating a meal), after 2 days I got the runs - bad! Needless to say, I dropped back down to 1 pill a day. The runs stopped. I suggest you speak with your doctor and tell him/her your experience. They may prescribe a different med.

I called my script provider today about the stench of the Metformin 500 mg they sent me. The harsh odor occurred twice before with different manufacturers. I presented it as 'an unwashed hillbilly' but, the yeast infection i read earlier was more accurate!
In any case, Express Scripts Pharmacy Department stated that, "If you leave the cap off the bottle for a few days, the smell should dissipate." She also said the smell is due to something they add in the mix (forgot what she called it) during the process. Good grief! :)

This is the best solution. Take out the pill(s) you need and let them sit for a minute or two before taking them. The fishy smell is gone from the individual pills you pulled out.

I've been getting Metformin 750 mg from PrimeMail Online Pharmacy for the last couple of years. This last batch stinks very badly, like some kind of feces & fish. Something is wrong with those pills to have a smell like that. I'll not take a pill that smells like that without some explanation. I'll be going to the pharmacy in town here to find out what's up. I have, in fact, stopped my intake of Metformin completely since Friday. I have noticed a concomitant reduction in odor which would seem to correlate with the levels in my system. The order seems to be :
1) Stool
2) Urine
3) Sweat
I have gone down the chain to no very little smell in my sweat, mild smell in my urine and a still pronounced odor in my stool. The persistence of this material is an issue with areas on my clothing, sheets and furniture that came in contact with my sweat to still have an odor. This smell is reducing with time suggesting either outgassing or oxidation.
A cursory search of the literature would suggest no material on the subject (except a little about the smell of the compound itself). However a search of the web seems to show others with my symptoms with an empirical support
for my conclusion (the metformin is the cause). We know the compound
itself smells, and my theory is that I have become saturated with it. There appear to be some threads which attribute this to poor generic manufacture, but I think that's just screed. I think the pros are smart enough to encapsulate the stuff so you don't smell or taste it in the process of
handling and administration. The interesting part is that I cannot
necessarily predict when the stuff will have this effect. This does lead to some concern as the thought of Ketoacidosis or Lactic acidosis is paramount in my mind. I am not seeing any symptoms of these conditions nor have I noticed any changes in my urinary habits that would suggest kidney issues.
OK I have been whgining about other posts her is my own. This is an excerpt of a letter I sent to my new doc today. I had a really bad experiance where that smell was coming out in my sweat! Gah !! it is the compound itself in my opinion

I think all metaformin smells the same but the good ones encaplulate the drug so you dont smell it. It is not a filler as far as I can tell.
