I take 100 ic gabapentin 3 times/day for sciatica. Now I find that my bladder leaks about once a week which is unnerving. Has this been reported as a side effect?

Leaking urine is definitely caused by Gabapentin/Neurontin. 2 years ago, I was taking 300 mg, then upped to 600 mg. 3 times a day for several pain issues, 68 yr. old female, also taking norco 10 mg. 3 x a day, 3 herniated discs in cervical & 3 in lumbar spine, plus arthritis, etc. The gabapentin did help a little with my pain but within 3 months, I would sit up to get up out of bed or a chair or bend over to pickup something and some urine would run down my leg, also when walking to the bathroom it would run down and I couldn't stop the flow and hold it until I got to the toilet. It was like a water faucet that's not completely shut off...talk about embarrassing and pantiliners & then pads don't always keep clothing dry.. Heaven help if you sit on someone's sofa! I quickly stopped the gabapentin (and thankfully didn't have any bad withdrawals but be cautious here) and my bladder went back to normal. I don't know why doctors don't caution patients about this side effect!! Especially since the current trend to refuse our norco prescriptions and use this drug for pain instead... in fact, my NP reduced my norco to 5 mg. one tablet every 12 hours And for help in the tapering down from norco she ordered me a script for Gabapentin 300 mg. 3 x a day!! Within about 3 weeks, my urine was leaking constantly, even turning over in bed would push some out and I could not stop it. It was worse than the first time. I had to use 2 extra long overnight pads and wearing pads 24 hours a day isn't good.. I also noticed when I did have to pee, it was just a tiny little amount and I had been drinking plenty of water.. Anyway once again I immediately stopped the gabapentin and my bladder returned to normal.. sorry for the long message but I hope it will help everyone who is experiencing this problem and wondering why and/or is this normal or will I leak forever... good luck

OMG I thought I was going crazy! I go to the bathroom right before getting into bed and within half an hour I have to go again. And during the night is the worst! Can even count the amount of times I havent made it to the bathroom. Sometimes I have to go 4 or 5 times a night. I refuse to let the doctor tell me it has nothing to do with the gabapentin.

I've been on gabapentin for about 8 months and have not been motivated to work out, but the main reason I'm here is because I've woken up in a puddle of wetness. I couldn't believe it was me. Was in denial that I pee'd a bladder full on myself without knowing it.

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that has also been proven to help with certain types of nerve pain.

This is not listed among the normal side effects, which may include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and weight gain.

I started Gabapentin about 4 days ago, 300 mg at night and I am supposed to increase it to 300 in the am after a week. In those 4 days...I have wet the bed one night, not made it to the bathroom "in time" 4 times. It's like the urge comes on so quick and I can't make it to the bathroom. Can't believe it happened so quick. Glad I found this post and that I am not the only one.

I took my first dose of Gabapentin (taking for sciatica) last night and had 2 instances of bladder issues. When I got up to go to bed I started to pee and I had to run to the bsthroom. This morning I was woken up because I was urinating. I have never had that issue and will not take that medicine anyone.

I'm so glad I found this... I've been taking 300mg TID for the past 6 days after having a cool sculpting treatment that has caused severe nerve pain. I have wet the bed twice in the past 3 days and had no idea it was even happening. No more liquid for me after 5pm. It absolutely has to be a side effect whether it is listed or not.

In the clinical studies I have read, Gabapentin has quite the opposite effect. I began reading About this as I had noticed that the incontinence I had experienced decreased when taking the Neurontin, I was very sleepy when taking Neurontin so I decided to just stop taking it. After going a full day without the Neurontin, I once again became incontinent. Having previously taking other medications for this problem with little to no relief and the onset of severe muscle spasms, I was thrilled to find that the medication I had been prescribed for Fibromyalgia was also controlling my urinary incontinence! Hope this provided the answers you were seeking.

I have the same problem, I go and I feel like I have to go right away. Terrible. I still have shingles almost 2 months now. Can't win.

I take 900 mg a day and I have actually peed the bed twice,not just leaked...BOTH times I would wake up in the middle of when I was going,also was like a dream....so embarrassed...

I have MS and a neurogenic bladder, but have just recently figured out that the 100 mg. gabapentin I take at night may be causing me to wet the bed. I went off it for two dry weeks, and the first night I went back on it for pain I wet the bed. I couldn't believe it. If this has been the contributing factor to my frequency at night, plus the reason for the wetting, I will be astonished. Going to go off tonight and see if my bladder is less overactive.

I take 100mg 3 x a day and the last 2 nights I sat up and my bladder just let loose! I started on 100mg for a month, IBS started then stopped, 200 the next month, now 300mg and this started!!!! I asked the cardio Dr. today he looked it up and said no, but I am with you!!! I had a urethra lift 6 months ago and it fixed any leakage. On top of it I never leaked like this. I feel the urge while sleeping, sit up and bam! Soak the bed. Thank you so much for sharing but it needs to be listed as a side effect! We must all tell our Dr's and call the companies! Does anyone know if I need to wean off. I am on it for nerve pain.

My Dr said it is a known site effect to Dr's that prescribe it. Reduce the amount. Tell your Dr

I just started the same dose, same frequency and mine is constant, no warning. As soon as there is any liquid of a decent amiunt, there it goes. I cannot even tell until I notice my underwear is wet. I am now wearing maxi pads until my next Dr appt. Thus is just rudiculous!!!!!

I also take gabapentin 100 mg 3 times a day I have noticed the leakage of my bladder and yes get up multiple times night.. Yes no sleep for the weary and exhaustion has kicked in. But has anyone had extreme heartburn or acid reflux from this medicine??? I was so sick last week vomiting out of both ends. I really don't want to take it except for it helping with the sciatica.

Gabapentin can cause bedwetting and urinary incontinence. Those side effects are listed now. I have the same issue.

I was started on Gabapentin 100mg. TID and I was
Dizzy , disoriented and then I was gardening (Florida Humidity)
And my bladder just let rip ! Stopped the med after 10 days .

I was prescribed 900mg of gabapentin. It does work with nerve pain, but the side effects are worse, I have the bladder leaks, retain fluids, eyes pain, dry mouth and most of all feel completely spacey. The new symptom I feel like I have the flu, stopped taking. I rather deal with the pain instead of the other problems brought on by taking the medication.

I have been going nuts lately because I have to wear depends at night because I have been wetting the bed. I never suspected gabapentin was cause but it did start about the time I began taking 300 mg gabapentin 3 times daily. I am going to taper off of it and see what happens. It doesn't help my nerve pain much anyway and makes my mouth and throat completely dry and very uncomfortable. I'll post again and let you know if gabapentin was the problem.
