Im 31yrs old now and I been taking oxycodone 10/325 for 17 yts after injuring my L5-S1 and both legs in an auto accident. It generally takes roughly 15-20 mins to work and I'm finding that I'm having to "DOUBLE UP" and am considering asking to increase my dosage at my doc visit next week. Are there any suggestions out there? Thanks so much.

Yes, these combination tablets are regular release ones, so they will usually take 15 to 20 minutes to start working, because your stomach has to start digesting them, before the medication can enter your blood stream to have its intended effect.

You may want to ask your doctor about OxyIR, it's a 5mg immediate release Oxycodone capsule. It could help you get better control of your pain, because usually one of them is taken for breakthrough pain to get in under control, while you also take the regular medication that will help in 15 to 20 minutes.

Learn more Oxycodone details here.

There is also a time released formulation of Oxycodone, without the Acetaminophen, that lasts for 12 hours, it's called Oxycontin.

All are narcotic analgesics, so they have the potential to be habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Same situation...started methadone...for pain, works WONDERS! OR ur liver!! I dont understand why more doctors dont prescribe, especially for multiple surgeries and the effects on liver and stomach....good luck..L4 & 5, S1 damage with progressive degeneration..u will be shocked at how much better u feel!!! Good luck!!

As far as how long it takes for oxycodone (5mg) to work, it depends on physiology and how long u have been on it. In my case it takes 1.6 hours!!! My very bad pain level seems to be the culprit!!! I don't know why anyone takes this crap for fun!!! It's a dangerous drug! Please stay safe!

More than likely your tolerance is building that's why you are doubling up. I have been through the same thing with 6 back surgeries. On oxycontin and Oxycodone for approx 15yrs. I was at max dose and still hurting and experiencing withdraw symptoms because my body needed more. So at the end of the day my mind and emotions were numb and I was still in pain. Even having pain I had never had before. Look up hyperalgia. I decided to detox so I could get a new baseline. Yes it sucked! But I had a lot less pain than I thought I would. Now using other methods like message, acupuncture, cupping and ultrasound. It was hard for me to admit that although I didn't think of myself as an "addict" I was "dependent". Best of luck to you.
