I was on Effexor XR for 6 months and got back anxiety and depression. Dr. tried to up the dosage, but my blood pressure went extremely high. I was tapered off to Prozac in April. I began on 10 mgs to 20 mgs to 40 now for two weeks. The other day I felt great - thought it was gone and now I have it back again. How long will it take 40 mgs of Prozac to kick it. It has been 12 days.

Thank you for the response, Amy! Much appreciated!

Hello, Theresa! How are you doing?

Some information that I'd like to add that many people aren't aware of, when it comes to psychiatrically active medications, is that sometimes they can also make things worse, before they get better. When first starting a new one, or increasing the dosage of an existing one, anxiety, depression, OCD and etc. may all get more intense for several weeks, but in some cases it heralds a good response to the chosen drug, with a cessation of symptoms once it reaches its full therapeutic level in the body.

However, that is not always the case, since it doesn't always mean that it's going to work.

Does anyone else have experiences to add?

I believe it's a little of both. You do feel pretty good right away (usually after the first 24 hrs), and if you are on the RIGHT med that helps you. And it also gradually helps by increasing your mood the more you continue to take it. Until you feel "normal" for your standards. Hope it helps. And good luck to you.
