Xarelto And Restless Leg Syndrome (Top voted first)

Updated

I have had RLS for as long as I can remember (33yr old female). However it only affected me once maybe twice a month and only ever at night for a few hours and was associated with physical fatigue or alcohol sessions (which were few and far between) and was controlled by taking a cold and flu nighttime tablet.

Just over a month ago I collapsed at home with DVT and subsequent bilateral Pulmonary embolisms. In hospital I was on twice daily clexane inj's. and then discharged with Xarelto. Once I completed my script of oxynorm for the pain and it was out of my body my RLS has been unbearable...24/7, I cant get to sleep before 5-7am in the morning (when I suspect the Xarelto has worn off and due to take the next dose). This has been happening for 2 weeks straight, sitting on the floor rocking at night to control the sensations. GP tried me on Mogadon which made me feel extremely drowsy and unsteady but did nothing for the RLS. The last 2 days ive been prescribed Sinemet (parkinsons drug) and that reduced the intensity until 11pm then nothing.. 'm lucky to have had 2-3 hours sleep a night over the last 2 weeks and my quality of life during the day is poor as my brain is not functioning. GP refuses to take me off Xarelto because of the clots and doesn't believe its related to RLS but the evidence speaks for itself..please has anyone else had similar issues and how did you overcome it?? Desperate mum.. Cant continue like this for the next 5 months..

Hello, Tracy! How are you?

The FDA doesn't list it as a side effect of this medication, but there's really no way to know how any certain person may react to any given medication, since we are all different. The typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising.

Given the issues you're having with it, I'd suggest perhaps getting a second opinion to see if you can try a different medication.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Hi, I went to see a private Hematologist after not getting anywhere with gp and finding it impossible to contact anyone at the public hospital whom I could contact. I am currently in the transition from Xarelto to Warfarin, taking twice daily Clexane of 80mg to cover me until my INR gets to at least 2. Changing the blood thinner has reduced the intencity of my RLS but has not solved it. Im still needing to take the Parkinson meds to get 4-5hours sleep. It may just be blood thinners in general irritating my CNS in some way?? Have had constant headache which varies in intencity. Hematologist said if it doesnt resolve the symptoms then he will refer me onto a Neurologist..the fact that this all started since my collapse has me concerned maybe something (clot) did reach my brain?? Not really sure if thats a probability?

I was prescribed oxynorm- 80mg 4x daily. Due to a complete failure on the surgeons behalf ( to cut a long story short) I ended up with 26 operations, chronic pain & now an addict through no fault of my own. When I run out of my pills my legs beccome a law unto themselves. No one understands the feeling/torture when your legs wil not remain still. The only product I recommend is quinine; found in tonic water.Try it. It may help a little & they are either prescribed, or over the counter meds, Im not sure. I do hope this may be of use. You have my deepest sympathy.

My daughter used to have restless leg syndrome. A holistic doctor had her take Standard Process Beta Food pills, and it went away. Also cleansing is beneficial as well.

Hope things have improved for you since your post. I've had RLS since childhood and would now consider it severe. I started Xarelto four months ago and it seems to be increasing pain in my back and legs which then triggers my RLS. I take 2 to 3 mg of Mirapex in the evening along with 50 mg of Tramadol. A low dose of Vicodin along with the Mirapex also worked before I switched to Tramadol. There are a lot of options for RLS so be persistent. Hope this helps!

Talk to a Neurologist not GP about a course of MIRAPEX (not genetic) or if severe enough Mirapex ER ( must be taken 4 hrs before sleep)
After 10 yrs suffering thru all the drugs this stuff works. Drug coverage may deny it because they don't want to pay BUT IT WORKS. Eagle Pharmacybin Lakeland Fla has an arrangement with mfg at $30,00 per mo. I couldn't function without sleep---no one can!

Hi! My daughter had restless leg syndrome when she was young. Couldn't sleep. A holistic doctor said it was a deficiency and prescribed her a Standard Process supplement called BETAFOOD. It's all natural. You can check it out on their website. It is sold through chiropractors. If you plug in your zip code, someone that sells the line in your area will pop up. It cleared right up, and she never had a problem again. It is a wonderful product line that I have since used for other problems! Good luck!!

I just started xarelto (day 5) and my restless legs started getting worse on day 3. Last night I had body wide RLS sensations accompanied by spasms, starting at 4:00 PM. I am taking mirapex for RLS. I took 4 0.5 mg mirapex before the RLS symptoms settled enough at 2:00 AM so I could sleep. The RLS symptoms are severe enough so that I can’t do anything - even watch a video.
Do RLS symptoms occur in patients on warfarin?
