Understanding Prednisone And How It Works
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I've been taking prednisone for 7 days (5mg tablets 4 times a day) I started with a chest infection, took two lots of antibiotics which helped a little then I was moved onto prednisone (I have asthma and inhalers weren't working), I'm guessing the prednisone is reducing the inflammation? My main question is 3 yrs ago I had a total right hip replacement and have suffered with discomfort ever since can't lay on my right side and it's just as uncomfortable laying on my back, I also had intermittent stabbing pain, since being on prednisone this has 98% gone I'm curious to know why? It has made such a difference to being comfortable not to mention sleeping.

Yes, Yvonne, Prednisone is a steroid class medication that is used to help alleviate inflammation, so that could be why it's helped so much. The NIH lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne, fluid retention, and weight gain.

Shaun, where do you live? There is no equivalent available OTC in the U.S. and Canada.

Hi, I suffer from eczema and the only med that helps is prednisone. I've been taking it every day for over a year. The pharmacy that I get meds from has now been sold and I cant get this med OTC. Is there any other comparable medication I can use that's available OTC?
