Rapid Weight Gain While On Allopurinol (Top voted first)

I started on allopurinol 100 mg tab in oct since then have gained 25lbs. Anyone else have this happen?

Hi, Thanks for the reply, I started researching the weight gain and read 25 % of people on Allopurinol have a rapid wgt gain. I noticed being really hungry like when taking steroids.

I have been on Allopurinol for 2 months and have put on 3kg. Am exercising more than before and eating the same.

Hello, LaceyLu! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having.

According to the FDA, Allopurinol is used to treat excess uric acid and it has been reported to cause rapid weight gain in a small percentage of people that take it. Other side effects may possibly include sore throat, nausea, dizziness, bruising and joint stiffness.

Have you spoken to your doctor? It might not be the right medication for you to take.

I am on 200 mg a day, I didn't notice until I saw your post, but I have gained 50# in 2 years. I thought I was overeating but I actually eat weather and don't hardly ever eat junk or fast food. I will definitely be bringing this up with my rheumatologist. Ty

Yes on allopurinol i am rapidly gaining weigh
and when I am on febuxstat weight stays static , no gain no loss.

This medication should be remove off from Distributing because it making people obesity and I can prove it! If take 100mg you will gain25 pounds, if you take 200mg you will gain 50 pound, if you take 300mg you will gain 75pounds. Please take it off the market I'm one the person that have gain a lot of weight taking this medicine!!!!!ASAP

I am on 300mg allopurinol and my weight has gone up to just over a stone , I do weight watchers and I am really getting fed up with this weight gain

I gained 47lbs on the medication. I took it for several years and didn’t understand why I was gaining weight! Then I went for a check up and my new doctor told me that was the reason. I got off of it and lost 75lbs.

I am 60yrs old take 200 mg allopurinol each morning for past two years and have gone from 185 to 203 lbs basically eating the same - if not less because I don't like the weight gain - same amount of exercise - maybe even more walking. What is it about Allopurinol that causes this - is it dangerous - and what do they recommend? Can't find any info online and doctors have no solution. I believe I would have to be on an extremely low calorie diet to lose the weight.

I started taking this about 18 months ago and have gained 80 pounds. I am now having problems with blood pressure, edema, and almost daily headaches. I kept telling my dr that I'm eating better (1k calories a day) and exercising more but still gaining weight. I started taking phentermine and STILL gained weight (in the past I could drop 10 pounds very easily in 2 weeks while taking it) and tried Truvision too. I had my thyroid checked along with lots of other things. The pharmacy was closed and I didn't get my allopurinol filled.... in 2 days I lost 4 pounds. I have started a chart to make sure that is the source but regardless I was still been getting kidney stones even while taking the meds.

Went shopping today, had to buy a size L shirt. Was a small and only last year started buying medium. Belly seems to be growing daily since I started taking allopurinol.

Yes... I am on 400mg of Allopurinol. I have been on for 30-45 days! I have put on over 15lbs! In addition, I have still had at least 2 flareups during that same period... There is DEFINITELY a correlation between Allopurinol and weight gain!

FYI: there are some new clinic programs out there; however, they are extremely expensive and most insurance doesn't pay! I was fortunate and may be accepted to a trial program! It gets rid of GOUT in seven months!

I started taking allopurinol a month ago and have gained 12 lbs eating less and exercising more! This is ridiculous! I thought it was just me until I saw this thread. Thank you for this info. Now I know Im not going crazy

I can attest to the weight gain from allopurinol...I've been taking it since March, 100mg.
