Percocet Drug Test Result Negative In Gastric Bypass Patient

Updated

My PCP prescribed Percocet 5/325, two tablets twice daily for years of low back pain associated with 2 compressed disks & a fractured vertabra causing right leg & foot numbness. Recently she had me urine tested.I did an at home test & came positive for oxycodone. No surprise, since I was taking it as directed. She stopped prescribing them saying I was negative which meant I wasn't absorbing them (because of my gastric bypass) or I was filtering my drugs to others or selling! I asked how I could come up negative since I came up positive at home.I reminded her she's known me for over 20 years & I would not throw my 30 years as an RN away by do doing something that stupid. She said the lab doesn't make mistakes! Anybody got any insights?

The labs may not make mistakes, but their tests do. On the cheaper, non-certified tests, false positives or false negatives have been known to occur anywhere from 4 to 50% of the time.

Did she not agree to do another test? Or a different type, perhaps blood, instead of urine?

By the time she pulled me off & I saw her again two weeks had passed.Knowing I had the gastric bypass (which she fully supported) with hindsight always being
20/20, I realize I should have insisted on a hair follicle test.I was just so shocked that the results showed negative & that she thought so little of me.I was very hurt. She has been my PCP for over 20 years & seen me on a routine basis.I THOUGHT we had a good rapport & we had mutual respect.Trying to go to someone else it would take forever to get in & I'd be starting at ground zero.Plus she'd probably put a note in that I showed what is referred to in medicine as "drug seeking behavior."When I told her that my feet go numb & burn when I'm walking she have me a neurology consult saying it is probably from neuropathy associated with my pre-diabetes.Haven't gotten to see him yet.Sorry so wordy. :-] thx for responding

so, if i take 3 percocets the day before I go to the doctors, and take a panel test in his office, I should pass... it should show up correct? Any experience at this situation? In my case, it has to show up.

Exact same thing happened to me. Not only was she my PCP for 10 years, but also my father and daughter as well. I am an ICU RN. She was a colleague as well. I had called and requested for her to call me because my pain was just not being relieved. Instead of calling me, she sent me a letter saying I was breaking their pain medication protocol and she would no longer be my physician. Not even a phone call after all those years. I was hurt, but mostly disgusted. If I was addicted or abusing drugs, wouldn't you want to find out why all of a sudden or just care for your patient and help them if that were the case. Not to mention if you think I'm abusing drugs, you don't care enough about the patients I'd be caring for to have a conversation with me. Very irresponsible and cowardly.

I've had the exact same experience. My primary Dr will no longer supply pain meds because of 3 negative drug tests. I am 66 years old and am being treated like I'm selling or giving away natcartics. Now I'm suffering with pain and can only take Tylenol which is no help. I'm getting a new Dr as mine is moving. I hate to go in asking for pain meds on the first visit and feel I couldn't get him to understand the absorption proplem. Any suggestions?
