My pain doctor of 2 years is decreasing doses for all patients of all pain meds. I take Methadone. Don't know why she's doing it but seems like it's some kind of a DEA thing. Anyway, I have to finder another doctor in the Seattle area. Does anyone know of somebody? Any help is appreciated more than I could express. Thank you.

Hello, Steve! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having.

However, you're going to experience the same thing, regardless of what doctor you see. They all have to do it, the current DEA recommendation is no more than the equivalent of 120mgs of Morphine, per day, with the caveat that they keep the patient's dosage as low as possible.

The only exceptions are for those that have intractable pain from a possibly terminal condition, such as stage 4 cancer.

The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

On top of this issue, it will also be very difficult to find a new doctor willing to prescribe Methadone, given its very high rate of addiction and dangerous withdrawals. Thus, you're most likely better off staying with your current doctor.

Does anyone else have any advice or ideas?

Methadone for pain? At a dosing clinic you are given a number, buzzed thru a restricted area, given the daily dose and out you go - till tomorrow. Your pain doctor can write a script for the month and you go fill your Rx at the pharmacy. Hundreds of milligrams in your possession at once. WTF??? What kind of game is this? Tn

Not everyone is an addict. This drug was created in Germany under Hitler by one of his scientists. Due to the highly addictive nature they did not purchase or redo their patent. It was picked up by the U.S. as Dolophine and used a lot for opiate addicts as it lasted overnight and allowed them to work cutting down on crime.

It is the cheapest long acting pain management drug known so that you know that is why.

I know in California pain management doctors are sending their patients to methadone clinics. It's sad but true. Doctors hands are tied because of these insane laws. The FDA is now saying that even if a person breaks his/her leg narcotics shouldn't be used they are recommending Motrin or Advil. When I was 14 years old in 1970 I was given Dihydrocodeine for dismembered (cramps). It's crazy but true.

Suzanne..I don't know if your an addict or not, but I am assuming since you think you know so much about Metadone clinics that either you or someone you know is an addict. First off The Germans not Hitler made methadone because they were running out of morphine. And Germany along with ever other Country has pharmaceutical companies that make methadone. Methadone was used for years as a chronic pain medication decades before it was used for opiate addiction. One other thing. I had to laugh when you described how the clinics "buzz patients in" until the next day. I go to the clinic twice a month and I've never been buzzed in. The clinics care enough about patients. At least the one I go to I have a counselor who I can see anytime I need to.. Where some people get their false information is a mystery to me.

I COMPLETELY agree with everything you said and it was very well said. However, I just wanted to point out the person who posted about methadone being made DID NOT SAY Hitler made it! What they said was that Germany invented the medicine UNDER HITLER, meaning it was invented in Germany during the time Hitler was in charge!
