Pain Medication Shame
(Newest replies first)

Updated

First of all, I hate taking pain meds but I was almost completely bedridden for 2 yrs. They gave me my life back and I'll be grateful for the rest of my life. My insurance company dropped me right before I was gonna have surgery to get some relief. So I had no choice but to go with the pain meds. I've been on oxycodone 30/150 per month (5 a day) and MS Contin 200mg 2 times daily since 2009. Had breaks when I could. My point is, nobody knows what my daily life is like. I feel ashamed every month getting refills. Maybe it's in my head but the staff at the pharmacy gives me that "pill seeker" look. I guess all that matters is my doctor trusts me and he knows my complete history. I know I'm not taking them for fun. I'd much rather be normal. Can anyone relate to what I'm saying?

Quick ? I go to pain management. The Dr. is in hospital facility. I have been paying one copay but two bills (dr. and hospital). Been doing this for 15 years. Now hospital wants me to pay them copay also. This just started after merging. Can they do this?

I was on SO many pain medications no doctor could even believe my Rx list when I moved back home after college. When I began seeing my doc I see now, he did a lumbar epidural injection & OMG the pain was gone the next day. I’m honestly surprised how much the injections helped. You may have the same experience and I hope you do find it relieving.

They always go by the date a Schedule II is picked up. If your prescription is for 30 days. If you take it as prescribed you should not need a new prescription for 28-30 days from when you picked up your last Schedule II. If you pickup your prescription on day 28 for two months. Be prepared to possibly have to wait 4 extra days after two months. The reason being you should have 4 extra days from picking your prescription up early.

I'm experiencing neck pain, about 8 inches down spine between shoulder blades. I had x-ray done at chiropractor and saw things at end of the bone. When I asked he replied "oh those things look like cat ears are bone spurs". I told my PCP I would also try a injection. It's been almost thirty years this awful pain, numbness, burning my hands and arms go to sleep.

I wanna do more like walking I've always done since in high school, but the back of neck burns even worse when I do. I've had physical therapy cause I had to before they would do MRI, but I don't believe it will happen. I'm gonna pray it works out, as I'm afraid I'll be crippled before long. My quality of life suffers cause of this situation I'm in, and because of the PAIN I don't do much. I've pushed as far as I can for all these years.

My worst nightmare is disability. I'm 60 still working now I'm a caregiver for mentally ill, thank God it's kinda laid back, cook, clean a bit, pass meds and paper work - but that's all I can do to survive. I'm alone just me and God, sometimes I wonder where he is, u know. But I'm will to try the injection, like the other story I read. Pray someone helps us, just to see if it make a difference. God bless all in PAIN today.

So what are you trying to say here? I think I’m missing some of the story cuz I’m not exactly sure if there’s an issue your having with your meds or not. I know not all pharmacies are the same and it also depends on the state that you live in but if your having some problems then feel free to explain them and I will do my best to tell you how and why your pharmacy is doing what they are. Pharmacy is very complicated. There’s so much more to it all than what some people may think. Lots of rules and regulations and laws follow. Anyway, let me know if I can answer any questions you may have.

I asked my Pharmacist when they started the prescription. He said it started when the prescription is filled. NOT when it was picked up. That may be the process where you work but it is NOT the process where I get my prescriptions filled.

Fentanyl is a opioid. Why would the center have signs saying they do not give opioids when they give fentanyl ? Unless you were not given fentanyl but something else that relaxed you and put you to sleep. All you have to go on is what you were told When fentanyl is administer by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or surgery center, it is safe.

The surgeon is the one that prescribes post op and discharge medications.

Yes I think the shame is just another form of discrimination. Our government seems to be more concerned about the money Insurance Companies have paid then the quality of life for most Americans. I had to have surgery for nerve damage on my spine, I was more concerned about the fact that surgergical center had signs every where that they were a no opioid hospital and I was forced to only have Fentanyl 10 minutes before surgery to put me to sleep. Fentanyl is more addictive than Heroion and more likely to kill a person from over dose. I wasn’t given anything for 2 years before surgery or after for pain. The most ironic thing is I was more concerned about Fetanyl killing me than the fact that I was having surgery on my spine that could paralyze me for life. Cindy

I work in a pharmacy and we always go by when meds are picked up not when they are filled. People have to wait until 90% of their controlled med r gone, so that 90% begins when it’s picked up. And the reason being is cuz if you don’t have the meds, you can’t be taking them. Once you pick them up that’s when you can begin taking them thus this is when the time begins. And yes it’s all very strict since these aren’t meds you wanna mess around with!

Re: Verwon (# 1) Expand Referenced Message

I can relate. In fact I used to be on 240 oxy ir 30s (8 a day), 180 100mg MSContin (3 a day & 15 100mcg Fentanyl patch. I broke my back in 3 places in a car accident about 12yrs ago. I can’t tell you how much my life has changed for the better getting off all of that crap. I now have a pain pump that delivers morphine directly into my spinal canal. It obviously doesn’t wipe away all my pain, but it helps enough I’m able to lead a much more normal life then when on tons of pills.

Rules need to change. My pain management dr. prescribes me a narcotic and makes it out for the twenty first. Well i was sick and could not get to the pharmacy and was told i can't get it next month till the twenty forth so pic your narcotic drug up on the day your dr. pescribes it. Very strict.

Yes I relate however be grateful your doctor is one of the very few in the US that prescribed and ACTUALLY CARES ABOUTHIS PATIENTS. I live in crippling pain everyday with no relief. Nebraska is the worst for finding prescribing doctors

Re: Maria (# 143) Expand Referenced Message

My earlier post was right on point. I have never worked at a Pharmacy but i know three people who work for the same Pharmacy. AFTER buying medication and other items from this same Pharmacy for 20 years I was told they did not have a particular pill on hand but they should have it by the next day. I was then called 2 hours later and they told me they could fill the script. This was back in the days when Pharmacy robberies were rampant. I asked one of my friends why this was now the case and she said that EVERY pain medication script presented was told the same thing. This way a Pharmacy could not be setup for a robbery. One person would ask if a Pharmacy had a certain medication and, once the Pharmacy technician said they had the medication there partner came in an hour later to rob the place. This went on for a couple of years until the vast majority of Pharmacies caught on and stopped telling people that they had a certain medication. No one but the Pharmacist knew when pain medication would arrive and how much they would receive. Now we have gotten to where a Pharmacist will scrutinize a script and call your Doctor and tell them that do not like the amount of pills written and will "suggest" another medication or a lesser amount without ever examining a person and not knowing anything about their medical history. Pharmacists are trying to act as Medical or pain Doctors. You seem to be at a Pharmacy where that is not done but that is not the case in a lot of Pharmacy's. As far as how much of a certain medication you are allowed where you work I can't comment on that because I do not know your Pharmacy. However, as long as I have gone to a Pharmacy where I have went for a long time and they know me well I have never had any problem filling my script.

There is really alot of harassment still going on with pain management. My back is trashed, cervical and spinal stenosis, I have a bad herniated S1, which causes me lots of of sciatica, At the end of of last year, I got hit by a car while crossing street. I got an xray done by my pain Dr. She told me that my pain and scoliosis are worse. She said she wanted to give me more pain meds, but my pharmacy would not fill them. As time went on, this pain Doc said I was taking too many meds, The next visit I saw this rude pain doc who said they would be putting me on a pain pump which had morphine in it. Morphine has never worked for me. Getting a second opinion this week
