Methylphenid Weight Lose Side Effect

My 7 year old son is taking Methylphenid 20mgs ER TAB MAL and he has lost considerable weight and isnt hungry anymore. I am very concerned about his weight and I do not like him taken this medication. He doesnt seem like the same when hes on it.

Loss of appetite, is listed as a common side effect of Methylphenidate. Have you tried any other treatment options outside of Methylphenidate for ADHD?

If anything, I would really watch his diet, since a lot of these processed foods seem to have an unbalancing effect on energy levels and mental acuity throughout the day. Answering questions like this can be difficult because I am not insinuating on how to raise your child properly, but I would recommend a diet high in fresh raw fruits and vegetables along with some lean protein sources in replace of other meals, in order to help control both weight and ADHD related symptoms.

My son, age 9, just started on Monday. He too has loss of appetite & trouble sleeping. We've tried Focalin, which had bad mood swings & no appetite but ravenous when wearing off. Tried Intuiv, very lethargate. I think his dose is too high to start, 36mg. I think your dietary input is good. I have to call Dr to see about dose. No mood swings but appetite & sleeping an issue. Wondering how long the body adjusts.to it?

My son has been on medication since he was 7, he's almost 19 now and in college. It has been so critical throughout his life to be able to focus in school and keep the hyperactivity at bay. We started him on other meds that did the same thing you're experiencing. I hated the way it made him such a zombie and he lost a ton of weight, plus it wasn't really working all that well for his ADHD.

I switched him to Adderall XR 30mg once in the morning and 10mg in the afternoon if he needed it, most times he didn't. It is the best med we have found. Same great personality, no real sleep issues, no significant weight loss and ultimate concentration. It's the best one on the market I feel as far as side-effects, not having much at all.

I know it's almost November, so hopefully things are better since you first posted, but if not then I highly recommend bringing up Adderall XR with your doctor because it changed the game for us.

Thank you for the info. It seemsto be working but appetite still not there. I've heard of Adderall and will discuss w/Dr in a few wks. Thanks again!

hey i dont know but maybe it will help.. i am a 27 year old and i have also been on this type of med for my adhd and most all meds in this class (adhd) effect appetite and sleep.. but if you take it earlier in the day and after a week or so as time goes by you will gradually get your appitite back and sleep will get better to.. it is good to take it first thing in the morning though.. but once it gets good in your system things get better.. when i started taking it i lost 15 pounds but i gained it back and my appetite also got back to normal
