are there any new and better medicines for the treatment of R.A which can work without taking steroids alongwith? ## I was diagnosed over 20 yrs ago with RA. I was on methotrexate, prednisone, & then various biologic drugs. I had to keep changing the biologics as they would eventually quit working. I used Embrel, Humira, Orencia, & Remicade with Remicade working longest. After it failed, i was having to stay in bed 2-3 days/week. Then i got approved by my insurance (Medicade) for Xeljanz. Pill taken once or twice daily depending on strength of pill. In 2 weeks i started going to the gym 5 days/week AND, more important to me, i was able to get off prednisone after 15 yrs on it! It is expensive, but if you have insurance, i can't say enough about how well it has worked for me ...

I have been on Methotrexate and folic acid for 3 weeks. Started with three 2.5 mg tablets of MTX for two weeks, then up to 6 tablets this week. The first week, I had terrible stomach pains, the second week I had bad fatigue. After taking my 6 pills on Friday, the side effects have been bad: nausea, no vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, back and right side pain and a rash. I finally reached the doctor on call in my practice (Memorial Day), and his comment was that it didn't look like I could take 6. My question is this, if you have switched to the injectable MTX, did you have less side effects, and at what point in your treatment did you switch? ## Hi my son started taking the injection 3 weeks ago he have had some stomach pain but no nausea. His doc told me pills have way more side e...

The day after I take my 6 2.5mg methotrexate tablets I always have enough stomach upset to make me spend an hour or so doing absolutely nothing but sit still. Are there any suggestions about what foods might help counteract this reaction? Are there any suggestions about changing the day (once a week) that I take my pills so that I could take them the day prior to a day with less physical activity? ## Hello, LeTigre! How are you? In many cases, crackers or bread can help reduce the nausea and stomach pain, as long as they aren't contraindicated with the given medication. Changing the day should be fine, unless your doctor has some reason for you not to do so. The FDA lists other typical side effects as possibly including back pain, blurred vision, headache and cough. Is there anythin...

I'm taking salazopyrin (5 x 500mg per day) and also metatrexate (20mg once weekly) for psoratic artritis, I've had a bad flair up can I take melfen 400mg with my normal meds ## Hello, Emma! How are you? No, both the Melfen and Salazopyrin are anti-inflammatories, so you shouldn't double up, unless your doctor specifically says that it is okay for you to do so. As reported by the U.S. FDA, both can cause increased risks of bleeding and stomach ulceration. How often do you experience a bad flare up?

Need a central/eastern NC doctor willing to prescribe pain medications. I am taking methotrexate and have been told multiple times not to take otc medications such as ibuprofen and Tylenol and referred by the specialist to my PCP for medications. My PCP is aware of the methotrexate and physician telling me not to use otc medications, but will not prescribe anything. He actually told me to take "a little" Tylenol or ibuprofen. A lot won't even help my joint pain. In need of a doctor willing to prescribe and preferably one I can see ASAP that does not require a referral. ## There is Cape Fear Valley Bladen Medical Associates in Elizabethtown, nc 28377 and the phone number is 1-910-862-5500 and they show concern for patients with severe pain. I have been taking Methotrexate for 2 months. I have had a weeks break and due to start with inj's. instead because of side effects from the oral methotrexate. I have just started with a cold and a tickly cough. Can you still take the inj. which is due Monday, or should you wait whilst the cold goes? Not sure what to do. Thanks. ## Hello, Lyn! How are you? I don't see it listed among the contraindications, but it would be best to double check to be sure. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, administration site reaction, abdominal distress and hypotension. I have had severe Arthritis, for along time. I hurt in all my joints all the time badly. I also have High Bloodpressure, one hip replaced and one knee raplacement. Arthritis is in my family. At one time I was diagnosed for Lupus and after being treated for it , I was told (Mayo Clinic)by the doctors that I do not have Lupus. Can that happen? Finally can Methotrexate help me? I would prefer not to take steroids. ## Hello, Shashi! How are you? Yes, it is possible that you were misdiagnosed as having Lupus. As to the Methotrexate, it depends on what type of arthritis you have, but some people have gotten very good results from it for rheumatoid arthritis. It may also depend on what other medications you are on. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including body aches, headac...

Side effects nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite what can I do ## Hello, Alma! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. How long have you been taking it? Those can be side effects of it, as reported by the FDA, you may also experience dizziness and headache. However, side effects are typically transient and go away with time, as your body gets used to the medication. If you've been on it for over a month and are still experiencing such issues, you may need to switch to a different medication.

I took methotrexate injections 15mg once a week for about 3 years off & on, mostly on for psoriasis & stopped completely in February 2015, (awful side effects). How long does this nasty drug remain in your system for? Just started on Trimethroprim for a kidney infection & one of the drugs to keep clear of is Methotrexate, will this still apply even though I have been off methotrexate for nearly 7 months now? ## Hello, Andy! How are you? No, it should be fine if it's been that long, but you may want to double check with your pharmacist to be sure. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I'm taking Methotrexate and folic acid pills to treat my psoriasis. Is it OK to take Amox-Clav 875MG with these other medications? ## Hello, Jared! How are you? Is your doctor aware that you're taking all of these medications? The antibiotic may increase the levels of Methotrexate, so usually it's recommended that a different antibiotic be used and that you stay away from the Penicillin class. The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

please help me with this small yellow pill it is alittle raised has a M on a line and a 1 under the line thank y6ou so much ## Hello, Donna! How are you? From what I can find in the prescription drug identification databases, there are two possibilities. If the yellow is a deeper yellow that seems mottled with some white/lighter areas in it, then it is a 2.5mg Methotrexate tablet. The FDA lists it as being used to treat cancer and it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, blurred vision and upper stomach pain. However, if it is a paler yellow that is solid in color, then it is a Clorpes tablet, it contains 15mgs of Chlorthalidone and 0.1mg of Clonidine, it is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure. Typical side effects are listed as possibly including dizz...

I am on 10 mg of Methrotexate weekly and 10 mg of Predisone. I will go to 9mg of Predisone Jan 1st. My questions is if I miss taking a dose of Metrexate on Monday my usual day and take it on Thur. would it be ok to have wine on a vacation from Monday through Wed. ## Hello, Maggsg! How are you? The FDA strongly cautions against indulging in alcohol while taking any prescription medication. Alcohol tends to worsen the side effects, so could feel more dizziness, nausea and drowsiness than usual. Thus, one drink may affect you as if you'd had 2 and so on. However, if your doctor does clear it for you to do this and have a couple drinks, then please make sure you won't be driving or doing anything dangerous. Is there anything else I can help with?

My 5 year old son is on 15mg Subcut Methatrexate injection , weekly. He has been on this drug for almost 2 1/2 years now. He also receives an infusion every 4 weeks - both are for his illness Juvenile Dermatomyositis, which he was diagnoised with when he was 18 months old. Up until now, he has tolorated both drugs very well - with almost no side effects. Just lately though, he has started to be very sick after the Methatrexate. 4/5 hours later he developes a high temtreture and is sometimes very sick. I am not able to understand (and nether can his consultants) why he suddenly, after 2 1/2 years has he started to develop this reaction. I would be more understanding, had my son reacted like this from day one but he hasn't showed any signs iof side affects to the methatrexate. Why now...

I have had RA for 8 years I was taking methotrexate and leucovorin 12-16 hrs later. Just started with new doctor and he changed me to folic acid he said leucovorin interfere with the methothrexate. I feel so much better it is hard to believe such a little change could make such a differents. So happy I made the change. ## Hello, Gail! How are you? I'm glad that you've got a combination that is working better for you. However, there is nothing listing a problem between them, so I can only assume your doctor was going by experiences with other patients. You should be aware, though, that the Folic Acid is listed as possibly interfering with the absorption of the Methotrexate. Has anyone else faced similar issues?
