I started taking Lo Loestrin FE on Feb. 2nd and it is now Feb. 21st and I have been bleeding non-stop (literally all day, every day). Doctor says to wait it out for 3 months... 3 months of non-stop bleeding? I've heard of breakthrough bleeding but this crazy!

Also 7/2/2011.... I'm 42, 2 kids, off BCP for about 3.5 yrs and I wanted to start a "mild" one to allevieate mood swings and clear up my skin. Never had terrible period problems or heavy periods, not even the years I was off BCP. I was prescribed Lo Loestrin FE, got the very beginnings of my period last Sat 6/25 so I started the pack the next day 6/26. I've been bleeding ever since and each day it's getting heavier. By this morning, it was so heavy and bright red w/ clots I went thru 3 reg Tampax in less than a hour. Never ever have I ever had to use super plus but I am today. It's getting heavier each day with no sign of stopping. I hate this BCP. CAN I STOP IT IMMEDIATELY?? Will the bleeding stop if I stop taking the active pills ?

Oh my gosh, LP, I could have written this almost exactly word for word!! I'm also 42, started spotting on 6/25, started taking Loestrin 24 on Sunday the 26th and since then I have had non stop heavy bleeding. This is day 6 of extremely heavy bleeding. The dr. put me on this to control my heavy periods and this is just making it way worse. My heavy periods only lasted 5 days. Now day 10 of bleeding/spotting and I am ready to scream.

Hi ladies, I am 47 and started taking loloestrin fe in feb 2011. Started my 6th pack a week ago. Since the beginning I ve gotten my period 11 days into the pack, which usually lasts 7-9 days :( Bad bloating weight gain extreme sadness on this pill, call Dr twice every month, she said stick it out, if u can deal with period mid month. I hate this. They are so expensive and i get mail order 3 months in advance so i feel like i cant throw $150.00 out the window. I need something better.

I share all your pain as I have been sufferring for months,. This bleading has caused me to get vulvar pain that is debilitating. Dr switched me to day to Ortho Novum 1/35.thinking that a higher dose would stop my period and allow me to heal. I look forward to sending you a good report.. Lo Loetrin is too mild for most of the population and doctors keep pushing them because they get incentives for pushing certain meds. Don;t be fooled by the fancy prescriptipons - ask for the generic and make sure the dosage is high enough.

I am taking Lo Loestrin BC and so far not digging the heavy period either. This is my first pack and I heard bleeding may be consistent for the first month but should be shorter after. It has definitely put a strain on my sexual life....and my poor boyfriend I know is a little frustrated and so am I...lol but i will update once i finish this first pack and start the 2nd to see if this works...Hang in there guys i know i am...for the moment:)

Ms Cramps a lot Says:

I started taking lo loestrin about 4 months ago. I was on the regular version loestrin for about 2 years. While on the regular loestrin BC i never got my period and just wanted to be safe and know i wasnt pregnant every month so i switched to a lower estrogen pill which of course had to be lo-loestrin. I am so sad to say i made this decision. I have been spotting almost every month and this month (pill pack 4) I have been non stop bleeding and cramps for about 2 weeks now and heavy as ever :( its driving me insane and definetly going to switch back to my regular version of this pill. Never going back to this disaster ever again!!! PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF AND DON'T EVEN TRY THIS PILL.

TL Says:

when you first started lo loestrin fe did you bleed for 2 weeks? Then it stopped by the second pack? I just started it two weeks ago and have been having dry blood but now there is red as well, this is my first time I am taking birth control and I don't know if this should happen.

Verwon Says:

tmom123, if you have been taking it for more than a month, then you can just seamlessly switch pills, without any break and without needing to worry about the correct time of your menstrual cycle.

You can just switch, with no break, just start taking the new ones and your body will regulate itself accordingly.

TL, these are hormonal based contraceptives, so breakthrough bleeding such as that can be a normal side effect of them, when you are new to taking them.

These types of things can happen for the first 3 months of us.

Is there anything else I can help with?

I have been on Lo Loestrin for a month and a half. My cycle came and it lasted 7 days. Mine usually lasts 4 days. Aug. 14th was the last day of my cycle and on the 22nd of Aug...I started bleeding again! I'm highly pissed. I take the pills for fibroids but I'm thinkin the surgery would have been a better idea. This is stupid. My sex life is being affected and I really don't know how long I can deal with that. I have no energy, zero tolerance and have been tired like I work in a factory or something. I wish someone had a remedy to stop the bleeding immediately! The good thing is I'm not alone but that's also the sad thing..hope you guys get some relief soon. I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

Well another update: First it was Lo Loestrin (which was AWFUL) to try and get my monthly bleeding under control. Bled non-stop on the LoLoestrin. Next it was Loestrin (which wasn't much better, still bled every day just not as heavy). Then they tried Desogen (which actually stopped the bleeding for about 7-10 days a month). Was on this for 4 months, by month 4 I was having the bleeding every day. Then pill #4 - Ovcom 35. Non-stop daily bleeding with it also. Gyno has now decided I have 2 options. Novasure or have my uterus taken out. Fun times being a girl .............

I had my son in June and my Dr gave me Lo Loestrin as birth control to try (he gives out free samples first) since I was on ortho when I had gotten pregnant. {Don't worry I had missed two in a row from being trapped and no way of getting home to grab my pack ..} I have been on Lo Loestrin for 2 weeks now and got my period again... and it's not light... I know my body is probably trying to get into the hang of things after having a baby, but I'm worried about if I should stop taking the pills and wait it out til my period is over and start another pack or keep going with this pack?Honestly it's scaring my finace' he thinks I am bleeding out too much. Before I went on it he went under the web looking for any problems/questions/concerns/and good things about this type of birth control for he worries. I was clinicly depressed at a kid, but now almost 30 the only thing I noticed being on this b.c. is mood swings. I get angry or depressed quickly and it disappears just as fast. I like it other than that. I do, however, will always like Yaz. It was my "happy pill." Anyways- any advice or comments on this problem? Have any of you been through this? Should I wait it out and start a new pack at the end of this period or just continue the pack I am on? Or just call my Dr and see what he thinks?

I had been getting my period every two weeks for a couple of years when I finally decided to go to the gynecologist. They gave me this pill and had me start it August 14th. Exactly one week later I was spotting just a bit. The next day I began an extremely heavy period with horrible cramps that lasted for a week. For the next week it's been mostly dry blood with some occasional red blood. I had terrible mood swings, really tender breasts, I was constantly tired, and my hair even started falling out! After nearly three weeks I decided I was done with this. I stopped taking the pill Friday and it is now Saturday. Does anyone know how long it will take for this bleeding to stop?! It is KILLING my sex life! Before this my fiancé and I were very active and this is just not working. :(

Wish i would've read all these sooner thats for sure. I started taking Lo Loestrin Fe 1 month ago and havent stopped bleeding since just like most of you. I've been crying and getting angry on and off in just a matter of seconds.. the cramps are so bad i can barley walk sometimes. I would never recommend this BCP to ANYONE. and today i did not take my pill and do not plan on taking it again. hopefully ill be back to myself.
